  • An unusual over-gravid female of Enterobiw uemiculcris was recovered from a 15-month old child by cello-tape anal swab. The patient resided in Inchon and complained of severe anal itching. The worm measured 7.8 mm in length and 0.5 mm in width, and retained typical morphologic features of E. uemiculnris such as cephalic alas and a sharply pointed posterior end. In this gravid female, peculiarly. the uterus was tremendously distended, and about 99% of the whole body length was completely packed with a great number of eggs. Other internal organs were difficult to observe. This paper describes a peculiar over-gravid female of E. vemiculcyis.

  • This study was carried out to examine the anesthesia and recovery time of the male and gravid female of marine benthic copepod Tigriopus japonicus at 500, 750, 1,000 ppm of MS-222. We also investigated the survival (%) and the nauplii production of T. japonicus for 14 days, which was anesthetized with MS-222. As the concentration of MS-222 was higher, the anesthesia time of the copepod was shorter and the recovery time was longer. The survival (%) of male T. japonicus was significantly higher than that of the gravid female both in anesthetized and control group. But the survival (%) of the male treated with MS-222 did not show the different survival (%) with the control (0 ppm). In contrast, the survival (%) of the gravid female treated with 750 and 1,000 ppm was significantly lower than that of 500 ppm and control. With regard to hatching, as the concentrations was higher, the number of hatching and total nauplii were lower and interval of hatching was longer. However, the gravid female treated with 500 ppm did not show the significant difference with control. We suggest that 500 ppm of MS-222 is the suitable concentration in isolation of T. japonicus.

  • Uterine rupture is uncommon in small animals and can be caused by trauma, infection, dead fetus, or inappropriate obstetric techniques. A 4-year-old, intact female mixed-breed dog weighing 3 kg presented for elective ovariohysterectomy with a history of a motor vehicle accident two months previously. The patient showed no clinical signs of uterine abnormalities or evidence of pregnancy during physical examination. Clinical examinations, radiography, and ultrasonography revealed no significant findings. During ovariohysterectomy, a completely transected left uterine horn and dome-shaped ends were identified. The uterine layers were everted such that the endometrium could be seen outside the uterine horn. The dog recovered without post-operative complications and was discharged the following day. This report describes a rare case of an asymptomatic uterine rupture caused by trauma in a non-gravid dog.

  • Oviposition activities of the larger black chafer(HolotTichia mOTosa Waterhouse) and Korean black chafer(H. diomphalia Bates) were examined in the laboratory and field from 1985 to 1990. In H. mOTosa and H. diomphalia, total durations of oviposition were 31.70$\pm$17.33 days and 61.17$\pm$23.15 days, numbers of days of actual oviposition were 9.00$\pm$5.03 days and 22.33 $\pm$11.72 days, total numbers of eggs laid laid per female were 23.43$\pm$16.26 and 65.67$\pm$37.97, and numbers of eggs laid per female per day were 2.60$\pm$2.50 and 2.94$\pm$2.34, under laboratory conditions. Difference of total numbers of eggs per female between both species seemed to be due mainly to numbers of days of actual oviposition. Oviposition period under laboratory conditions was considerably delayed behind that in the field in H. morosa but the two oviposition periods were almost overlapped in H. diomphalia. In the field, rates of gravid females of H. diomphalia were obviously higher than those of H. mOTosa, but numbers of eggs per gravid female were almost same in the two species, H. diomphalia adults did not show marked oviposition and feeding preference among several species of weed plants in the insect net chamber.

  • An insect parasitic mite was found on a larva from Japanese apricot seed. The mite was identified as Pyemotes moseri Yu et Liang (Acarina: Pyemotidae) new to Korea. The host larva was identified as Eurytoma maslovskii using mitochondrial DNA sequencing analysis. We conducted preliminary study on its reproduction and parasitization capacity in laboratory condition. A mated female mite reared on Eurytoma maslovskii larva. We counted and sexed newborn progenies and then eliminated them during periodical observations. To test parasitization capacity, a PCR tube containing mass reared P. moseri and Japanese apricot seeds (assumed bear larva of E. maslovskii) placed in a stainless bath filled with potting soil. One month later, we surveyed the seeds whether the E. maslovskii larva parasitized by mite or not. We repeated this experiment three times with five replications each. Average life span (days from parasitization to the end of reproduction) of gravid females was 24.4 days (n=8). A gravid female reproduced 104.0 female progenies (n=8). Although there were more than seven Japanese apricot seeds per bath containing larva or pupa, we found parasitization only in two seeds.

  • The harpacticoid copepod, Tigriopus japonicus is one of the most important zooplankton as a live food for the production of marine fish fry. Thus, the salinity tolerance and the optimum culture environment of this copepod in terms of salinity, temperature and light were examined. The food values of 6 kinds of phytoplankters and 2 kinds of yeast were also investigated for mass culture of this copepod. The results are as follows: After 5 day culture in the experiment of salinity tolerance, the survival rates of the gravid female at $0\%\;and\;90%o\;were\;40\%\;and\;70\%$, respectively. However, at salinity ranging from $2\%o\;to\;80\%o$, high survival rates above $85\%$ were observed. It means T. japonicus is very euryhalinous species. Temperature was more important factor than salinity for the fecundity of T. japonicus. The optimum culture conditions of this species were $24^{\circ}C,\;24\%o$, and 3,000 lux with 24 L: 0D. Under these culture conditions, the average fecundity from a gravid female per spawning was 38 nauplii, and the interval time between spawnings were 2.05 days. Phaeodactylum tircornutum seemed to be the most suitable phytoplankton as a live food for T. japonicus, and the large chlorophyta, Tetraselmis suecica showed the lowest food value among 6 phytoplankters and 2 yeasts. The food value of w-yeast was better than that of baker's yeast, and it is similar to that of phytoplankton such as Amphora sp., Chlorella ellipsoidea and Nannochloris oculata. So, the w-yeast seems to be appropriate food source for mass culture of T. japonicus.

  • In order to correlate the number of eggs In female Enterobius vermicularis with their body length and to re-evaluate the number of eggs liberated by gravid females, a total of 203 worms were examined. Those females were removed from naturally infected orphans with mebendazole (100mg) and had been fixed in 10% formalin(Cho et al., 1981). The decent ones which were selected under dissecting microscope were unbroken, neatly fixed females without contaminated eggs on their surface. The worms were measured by their body length, softened in 0.1N NaOH solution overnight, and teased by dissecting needles. And their number of shelled eggs was measured in a counting chamber made as described by Denham et at. (1971). The results were summarized as follows: 1. The observed females, 4.10~9.90mm long, began to have shelled eggs in uterus when body length was 5.50mm or longer. 2. The percentage of females with eggs in uterus was as follows by range of body length: 25% in 5.50~5.99mm long, 53.3% in 6.00~6.49mm long, 86.7% in 6.50~6.99mm long, 95.2% in 7.00~7.49mm long and 100% in 7.50mm or longer. 3. The mean and standard deviation of egg number were as follows by the length of females: $19{\pm}50$ in 5.50~5.99mm long, $734{\pm}1,597$ in 6.00~6.49mm long, $1,473{pm}1,606$ in 6.50~6.99mm long, $1,530{\pm}2,055$ in 7.00~7.49mm long, $2,567{\pm}2,046$ in 7.50~7.99mm long, $5,598{\pm}2,470$ in 8.00~8.49mm long, $9,318{\pm}2,651$ in 8.50~8.99mm long, $10,678{\pm}2,892$ in 9.00~9.49mm long and $13,323{\pm}1,778$ in 9.50~9.90mm long. 4. The numbers of uterine eggs showed greater individual variation when the female lengths were in range of 5.5~8.0mm. When the female length was longer than 9.0mm, the egg numbers were over 10,000 in majority, and showed lesser individual variations. Above results su99ested that the e99 Production in female 5. vermicularis began in 28~32 days after infection and that in early stapes, the egg Production varied by individual worms, but in gravid females longer than 9. Qmm at last deposited 10,000 to 16,000 eggs in their uterus with the least individual variations.

  • Six species of freshx\water Unionidae mussels in Korea, Anodonta arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana, Unio douglasiae, U. douglasiae sinuloatus, Lamprotula gottschei, Lanceolaria acorohyncha were compared in regard to the various taxonomical characteristics of ultra structures of shells and glochidia. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows;the orter demibranchs of all the females of six species have served as marsupial(gravid)pouch. However, all the foru demibranchs were used as the marsupium in some female individuals of L. gottschei. The glochidia of A. arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana and L. gottschei were separated one by one with the mucous strings and U. douglasiae sinuolatus were round-subtriangular in shape, and those of L. gottschei were subelliptical in shape. Each of the glochidial shell valves of six species had a hook studded with many spines on the superior face on valve. The glochidial shell valve had two or three rows of large spines; A. arcaeformis flavotincta, A. woodiana, and L. gottschei had two rows and three rows in U. douglasiae, U. douglasiae sinuolatus, and L. acrorhyncha. The numbers of sensory hairs of A. arcaeformis flavotincta and A. woodiana were all eight, those of U. douglasiae, U. douglasiae sinuolatus and L. acrorhyncha were six. and that of L. gottschei was four. The external and internal surfaces of the glochidial shell valves of A. A. arcadformis flavotincta, A. woodiana, and L. gottschei had foveolate and psilate in U. douglaseae, U. douglasiae sinuolatus and L. acrorhyncha.
