  • We investigated the effect of graphite electrode geometry and combination on nanocarbon material synthesis using underwater discharge plasma(UDP). The UDP system consists of two graphite electrodes and beaker filled with de-ionized water. A high voltage of 15 kV with a frequency of 25 kHz is applied to produce UDP using an alternating-current power source. The UDP system with conical electrodes produced the largest amount of products due to the concentration of electrical fields between electrodes. In addition, hollow-shaped stationary electrode and conical-shaped moving electrode stores discharge-induced bubbles and maintains longer reaction time. We found from Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy that high quality carbon nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes are synthesized by the UDP system.

  • A screen printed graphite electrode has been developed for a simple and sensitive determination of phenolic compounds in an aqueous solution. The electrode developed uses a simple and effective screen printing technique with ${\alpha}-Cyclodextrin({\alpha}-CD)$ modified graphite ink. Phenols were captured on the surface of the ${\alpha}-CD$ modified electrode through complex formation. The phenol/ ${\alpha}-CD$ complex was deposited and quantified electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The optimization of the experimental parameters was performed in regard to electrode composition, pH, temperature, sample preconcentration time. Interferences from other organic compounds were investigated. The detection limit for phenols was 500 ${\pm}7$ nM for DPV, with the linear range of 0.5 ${\mu}M$ -25.0 ${\mu}M$ and 30 ${\pm}2$ nM for SWV, with the linear range of 30 nM - $50{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • In discharge machining, material is removed by electrical discharge between the electrode and the workpiece. An important consideration in EDM is that the wear of the electrodes decreases the final precision of the workpiece. The edge wear of the electrodes proceeds very quickly because sparks occur more frequently at the edges with high local electrical strength. In this study, mold steel was discharged with a wedge-shaped graphite electrode to measure the edge wear of the electrode according to the depth. The electrode edge wear increased with depth during EDM and a wear model was developed. The model predicted that the edge wear can be reduced by approximately 70% using two electrodes instead of a single electrode. The model was supported by the experimental comparison of the dual electrode method and the single electrode method.

  • In order to improve the lithium ion battery's performance, the carbon nanofibers were introduced to the anode electrode fabricated with natural graphite particles. The influence of structural adjustment of the particles by the introduction method of carbon nanofibers and the content of carbon nanofibers on the electrical property and charge/discharge characteristics of the electrode were investigated. The electrode fabricated with the mixture of 10 wt% of carbon nanofibers grown separately and 90 wt% of graphite particles showed an excellent discharge capacity of 400 mAh/g and the improved cycle performance. The improved performance could be explained by that the carbon nanofibers shortened and uniformly distributed on the surface of graphite particles by ball milling increased the stability for the intercalation/deintercalation of lithium ion and increased the electrical conductivity due to the closed packing between graphite particles.

  • Silicon (Si) is recognized as a promising anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, under a condition of electrode comparable to commercial graphite anodes with low binder content and a high electrode density, the practical use of Si is limited due to the huge volume change associated with Si-Li alloying/de-alloying. Here, we report a novel core-shell composite, having a reversible capacity of ~ 500 mAh g-1, by forming a shell composed of a mixture of nano-Si, graphite nanosheets and a pitch carbon on a spherical natural graphite particle. The electrochemical measurements are performed using electrodes with 2 wt % styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and 2 wt.% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder in an electrode density of ~ 1.6 g cm-3. The core-shell composites having the reversible capacity of 478 mAh g-1 shows the outstanding capacity retention of 99% after 100 cycles with the initial coulombic efficiency of 90%. The heterostructure of core-shell composites appears to be very effective in buffering the volume change of Si during cycling.

  • Tin oxide was coated on graphite particle by sol-gel method and an electrode with this material having microcrystalline structure for lithium ion battery was obtained by heat treatment in the range $400-600^{\circ}C$. The content of tin oxide was controlled within the range of $2.25wt\%\~11.1wt\%$. The discharge capacity increased with the content of tin oxide and also initial irreversible capacity increased. The discharge capacity of tin oxide electrode showed more than 350 mAh/g at the initial cycle and 300 mAh/g after the 30th cycle in propylene carbonate(PC) based electrolyte whereas graphite electrode without surface modification showed 140 mAh/g. When the charge and discharge rate was changed from C/5 to C/2, The discharge capacity of tin oxide and graphite electrode showed $92\%\;and\;77\%$ of initial capacity, respectively. It has been considered that such an enhancement of electrode characteristics was caused because lithium $oxide(Li_2O)$ passive film formed from the reaction between tin oxide and lithium ion prevented the exfoliation of graphite electrode and also reduced tin enhanced the electrical conduction between graphite particles to improve the current distribution of electrode.

  • The rate capability and low-temperature characteristics of graphite electrode are investigated after surface treatment with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) or phthalocyanine (Pc). Uniform coating layers comprising amorphous carbon or copper are generated after the treatment. The rate performance of graphite electrodes is enhanced by the surface treatment, which is more prominent with CuPc. The resistance of the graphite electrode estimated from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and pulse resistance measurement is the smallest for the CuPc-treated graphite. It is likely that the amorphous carbon layer formed by the decomposition of Pc facilitates $Li^+$ diffusion and the metallic copper derived from CuPc improves the electrical conductivity of the graphite electrode.

  • An amperometric sensor for L-ascorbic acid(AA) in methanol media has been made by immobilizing squash-tissues on a graphite rod disk. A detection limit of the electrode was $2{\times}10^{-6}M$ L-ascorbic acid. In comparison with an isolated enzyme based ascorbate oxidase(AO) electrode, the plant-tissue electrode offered high biocatalytic stability and activity and extremely low cost. The electrode has a useful lifetime of 1 week.

  • We created a new graphite-Cu(II) electrode and found that the electrode could catalyze FADH$_2$ oxidation and FAD reduction coupled to electricity production and consumption, respectively. In a fuel cell with graphite-Cu(II) anode and graphite-Fe(III) cathode, the electricity was produced by coupling to the spontaneous oxidation of FADH$_2$ Fumarate and xylose were not produced from the enzymatic oxidation of succinate and xylitol without FAD, respectively, but produced with FAD. The production of fumarate and xylose in the reactor with FAD electrochemically regenerated was maximally 2- 5 times higher than that in the reactor with FAD. By using this new electrode with catalytic function, a bioelectrocatalysts can be engineered; namely, oxidoreductase (e.g., lactate dehydrogenase) and FAD can function for biotransformation without an electron mediator and second oxidoreductase for cofactors recycling.

  • The graphite/$SiO_2$ composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries were prepared by sol-gel method to improve the graphite's electrochemical characteristics. The prepared graphite/$SiO_2$ composites were analysed by XRD, FE-SEM and EDX. The graphite surface modified by silicon dioxide showed several advantages to stabilize SEI layer. The electrochemical characteristics were investigated for lithium ion battery using graphite/$SiO_2$ as the working electrode and Li metal as the counter electrode. Electrochemical behaviors using organic electrolytes ($LiPF_6$, EC/DMC) were characterized by charge/discharge, cycle, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests. The lithium ion battery using graphite/$SiO_2$ electrodes had better capacity than that of using graphite electrodes and was able to deliver a discharge capacity with 475 mAh/g at a rate of 0.1 C. Also, the capacity retention ratio of the modified graphite reaches 99% at a rate of 0.8 C.
