A new graphite intercalation compound (GIC), n-octylammonium tetrachlorofeffate(Ⅲ)-graphite, has been derived from well-known ferric chloride graphite intercalation compound. X-ray diffration study shows that the basal spacing of this new GIC is 20.8 Å. In order to investigate the local geometry around the iron atom in the graphite layers, X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments were performed. The first discharge capacity of its exfoliated form is found to be 862 mAh/g, which is more than double the value of pristine graphite (384 mAh/g). Such a drastic increase implies that the exfoliated graphite is a promising electrode material.
The characteristics of all polymer composites containing carbon materials are determined by four factors: component properties, composition, structure and interfacial interactions. The most important filler characteristics are particle size, size distribution, specific surface area and particle shape. As a consequence, in this paper we discuss the aspects of the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of composites with different fillers of carbon black, carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene and graphite and focus on the relationship between factors and properties, as mentioned above. Accordingly, we fabricate rubber composites that contain various carbon materials in carbon black-based and silica based-SBR matrixes with dual phase fillers and use scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, a rhometer, an Instron tensile machine, and a thermal conductivity analyzer to evaluate composites' mechanical, fatigue, thermal, and electronic properties. In mechanical properties, hardness and 300%-modulus of graphene-composite are sharply increased in all cases due to the larger specific surface. Also, it has been found that the thermal conductivity of the CNT-composite is higher than that of any of the other composites and that the composite with graphene has the best electrical properties.
This paper predicted the engineering constants of spatially reinforced carbon/ carbon composites and analyzed the mechanical behaviour of the kick motor nozzle. Those equivalent engineering constants are used to analyze the mechanical behaviour of the kick motor nozzle. Because the distribution of equivalent engineering constants is varying as change its structure, we made a program to predict engineering constants of spatially reinforced composites. The kick motor nozzle consists of graphite or spatially reinforced carbon/ carbon composites for the nozzle throat, carbon/ phenol for the nozzle entrance and the expansion part, and steel for the outer surface of the expansion part. The 4-D carbon/ carbon composite shows the smallest deformed shape of the nozzle throat, which has a favorable effect on the rocket thrust, and the most uniform deformation of all nozzle throat materials. In addition to analysis, ground firing tests of 4D C/ C nozzle throat and graphite nozzle throat were performed.
When manufacturing bulk graphite, pores develop within the bulk during the carbonization process due to the volatile components of the fillers and the binders. As a result, the physical properties of bulk graphite are inferior to the theoretical values. Impregnants are impregnated into the pores generated in the carbonization process through pressurization and/or depressurization. The physical properties of bulk graphite that has undergone impregnation and re-carbonization processes are outstanding. In the present study, a green body was manufactured by molding with natural graphite flakes and phenolic resin at 45 MPa. Bulk graphite was manufactured by carbonizing the green body at 700 and it was subsequently impregnated with impregnants having viscosity of 25.0 cP, 10.3 cP, and 5.1 cP, and the samples were re-carbonized at $700^{\circ}C$. The above process was repeated three times. The open porosity of bulk graphite after the final process was 22.25%, 19.86%, and 18.58% in the cases of using the impregnant with viscosity of 25.0 cP, 10.3 cP, and 5.1 cP, respectively.

$ZrO_2$-based composites reinforced with 6.5 vol.% of carbon foam, carbon fiber, and graphite were fabricated using spark plasma sintering, and characterized using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. Their thermal properties were also investigated. The microstructures of the reinforced composites showed that carbon fiber fully reacted with $ZrO_2$, whereas carbon foam and graphite did not. The carbothermal reaction of carbon fiber had a negative effect on the thermal properties of the reinforced $ZrO_2$ composites because of the formation of zirconium oxycarbide. Meanwhile, the addition of carbon foam had a positive effect, increasing the thermal conductivity from 2.86 to $3.38Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$ at $1,100^{\circ}C$. These findings suggest that the homogenous distribution and chemical stability of reinforcement material affect the thermal properties of $ZrO_2$-based composites.

Direct laser vaporization of transition-metal(Co, Ni)/graphite composite pellet produced single wall carbon naotubes(SWNT) in the condensing vapor in a heated flow cylinder-type tube furnace, Transition metal/graphite composite pellet target was made by mixing graphite, Co, and Ni in 98:1:1 atomic weight ratios, pressing the mixed powder, and curing it. The target was placed in a tube furnace maintained at 1200$^{\circ}C$ and Ar inert collision gas continuously flowed into the tube. The 2nd harmonic, 532nm wavelength light from Nd-YAG laser was used to vaporize the tube. The carbon nanotubes produced by the laser vaporization were accumulated on quartz tube wall. The raw carbon nanotube materials were purified with surfactants(Triton X-100) in a ultrasonicator. These carbon nanotubes were analyzed using SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopic method. The carbon nanotube growth on the Ni-patterned Si substrate was investigated by the CVD process. Transition-metal, Ni and CH4 gas were used as a catalyst and a reactant gas, respectively. The structure and the phonon frequencies of the carbon nanotubes formed on the patterned Si substrate were measured by SEM and Raman spectrometer.
Expanded graphite/carbon fiber hybrid conductive polymer composites were fabricated by the preform molding technique. The conductive fillers were mechanically mixed with a phenol resin to provide an electrical property to composites. The conductive filler loading was fixed at 60wt.% to accomplish a high electrical conductivity. Expanded graphites were excellent in forming a conductive networking by direct contacts between them while it was hard to get the high flexural strength over 40MPa with using only expanded graphite and phenol resin. In this study, carbon fibers were added in composites to compensate the weakened flexural strength. The effect of carbon fibers on the mechanical and electrical properties was examined according to the weight ratio of carbon fiber. As the carbon fiber ratio increased, the flexural strength increased until the carbon fiber ratio of 24wt.%, and then decreased afterward. The electrical conductivity gradually decreased as the increase of the carbon fiber ratio. This was attributed to the non-conducting regions generated among the carbon fibers and the reduction of the direct contact areas between expanded graphites.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) convert chemical energy to electrical energy via electrochemically active microorganisms. The interactions between microbes and the surface of a carbon electrode play a vital role in capturing the respiratory electrons from bacteria. Therefore, improvements in the electrochemical and physicochemical properties of carbon materials are essential for increasing performance. In this study, a microwave and sulfuric acid treatment was used to modify the surface structure of graphite granules. The prepared expandable graphite granules (EGG) exhibited a 1.5 times higher power density than the unmodified graphite granules (1400 vs. 900 mW/m3). Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed improved physical and chemical characteristics of the EGG surface. These results suggest that physical and chemical surface modification using sulfuric acid and microwave heating improves the performance of electrode-based bioprocesses, such as MFCs.
The formation of the graphite spherulites has been studied experimentally in the Ni-C liquid under high pressure and temperature. In the diamond-stable region the graphite spherulites were formed and grew stably. They were not the polycrystalline particles but the single crystals of the fullerene-type, respectively, grown spirally with much imperfection. And they were proved to be in a mixture state of carbon atoms with $sp^2$- and $sp^3$-bonding by an Auger electron spectroscope and a high resolution transmission electron microscope. As the pressure decreased from the diamond-stable region to the graphite-stable region, the shape of the graphite particles changed gradually from the sphere to the flaky shape. The formation of the graphite spherulites was attributed to the stable existence of the carbon atoms with $sp^3$ bonding in the diamond-stable region. The formation of the large fullerene-type graphite spherulites with much imperfection is well agreed with Kroto's prediction for growth of the giant fullerene.
Graphite has been used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries for the past 30 years due to its low de-/lithiation voltage, high theoretical capacity of 372 mAh/g, low price, and long life properties. Recently, all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLB), which are composed of inorganic solid materials with high stability, have received great attention as electric vehicles and next-generation energy storage devices, but research works on graphite that works well for ASSLB systems are insufficient. Therefore, we induced the performance improvement of ASSLB anode electrode graphite material by removing the amorphous carbon present in the carbon material surface, acting as a resistive layer from the graphite. As a result of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis using heat treated graphite in air at 400, 500, and 600 ℃, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) at (002) peak was reduced compared to that of bare graphite, indicating that the crystallinity of graphite was improved after heat treatment. In addition, the discharge capacity, initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cycle stability increased as the crystallinity of graphite increased after heat treatment. In the case of graphite annealed in air at 500 ℃, the high capacity retention rate of 331.1 mAh/g and ICE of 86.2% and capacity retention of 92.7% after 10-cycle measurement were shown.
