Boeun granodiorite, which intruded into the metasedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon Group, show chemical natures of metaluminous and calc-alkaline. Generating and emplacing environment of the Boeun granodiorite would have been a active continental margin. Comparing to the contemporaneous Inje-Hongcheon granodiorite in the Gyeonggi massif, the Boeun granodiorite seems likely to have formed under more immature continental arc environment. Compositional changes of major, trace and rare earth elements in granodiorite and felsic dyke are not certain to indicate crystallization differentiation. From this fact, the simple fractional crystallization model would be in question to explain the magma process which controlled the formation of the Boeun granitic mass. The model calculations for Rayleigh fractionation, fractionation with variable major-component composition, assimilation-fractional crystallization (AFC) were carried out to examine the magma process of the mass. The results of former two models do not agree with the compositional variations in the mass. The AFC model can be, however, applied to the magma process. The conditions for AFC process are (1) composition of assimilated wallrock is similar to that of primary magma. (2) assimilating rate is similar to crystallizing rate, and (3) mass of assimilated wallrock is about 10% of that of the magma. These conditions deny a possibility that the assimilated wallrock was the metasedimentary rocks of the Ogcheon Group. This indicates that after having experienced the assimilation process in deeper crust, the granodiorite magma intruded into the Ogcheon group. Every model calculating suggests that the felsic dyke was differentiated not from the granodiorite magma, but from a different source magma.
Domestic marbles are mostly distributed in Gyeonggi and Yeongnam Massifs, southwest and northeast Ogcheon Belts, which belong to Precambrian, age-unknown, Cambrian-Ordovician ages, respectively. The former marbles occur as interbedded rocks in metasediments and xenoliths in granitic gneisses. Age-unknown ones occur as interbedded in the formations of Hyangsanri, Gyeomyeongsan, Hwajeonri and Munjuri, and some in metasedimentary rocks. The latter ones occur as interbedded in Pungchon Limestone, and in Jeongseon Limestone, Hwacheonri Formation and Great Limestone Group, respectively. Among physical properties, porosity shows irregular patterns to density and compressive strength, respectively. Absorption ratio has a linear pattern of positive trend to porosity, and compressive strength mostly shows a positive trend to tensile strength. Compressive strengths of the marbles are as follows : Precambrian $1,106{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, age-unknown $935{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$. Cambrian $1,162{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$ and Ordovician $1,560{\;}kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Tensile strengths have decreasing trends as the above order of geologic age. In diagrams of major elements, $Al_2O_3,{\;}Fe_2O_{3(t)}{\;}and{\;}Na_2O+K_2O$ generally show positive trends with increasing $v_2$. MgO/CaO of Precambrian and age-unknown marbles have much higher values than Cambrian and Ordovician marbles as follows, Precambrian 0.31, age-unknown 0.30, Cambrian 0.03 and Ordovician 0.08. And MgO shows a negative trend with increasing CaO, which nay be caused by dolomitization. By MgO contents they can be classified into calcitic dolomite, dolomitic limestone, limestone and dolomitic limestone, respectively.
Structural analysis for a large-scale fault in Maegok-dong, Ulsan, was carried out based on filed-works to investigate the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the fault as well as its Quaternary slip. As results, a series of repeated stratigraphy, minor faults, fracture zones, and deformation band clusters are observed over a distance of about 100 m in the first studied site consisting of sedimentary rocks, which may indicate the damage zone of a large-scale fault in this site. In the second site, mainly composed of granitic clastic rocks, a large-scale thrust fault is expected based on low-angle dipping faults showing branched and/or merged patterns. Age of the last slip on this fault was restrained as after 33,275 ± 355 yr BP based on radiocarbon dating for organic material included in the gouge zone. Dimension of fault damage zone, dominant sense of slip, and age of the slip event associated with the fault suggest that these structures have a close relationship with the Ulsan Fault and/or Yeonil Tectonic Line, which are well-known large-scale neotectonic structural features around the study area. Therefore, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the faults in detail based on structural geology and paleoseismology in order to ensure seismic and geologic stability of the buildings under construction, and to prevent geologic hazards in this area.
Ulsan granite is plotted mainly in the region of syeno-granite of the Streckeisen diagram, which consists with those of iron related granites in the area of Kimhae-Mulgum, while Chindong granites and Yucheon-Eonyang granites are plotted in the regions of granodiorite-diorite and monzo-granite, respectively. These granites show a differentiation trend of calc-alkaline magma, and their magmatic evolution from intermediate to acidic rocks is consistant with the general crystallization path of the Cretaceous granitic rocks in the Gyeongsang basin. The difference index (D.I.) is 70~90 for Ulsan granite, which lies between 35~80 of Chindong granites and 85~95 of Yucheon-Eonyang granites. These granites are distinguishable from each other by variation patterns of chemical elements. For instance, there is clear difference in content of some major and trace elements between Ulsan granite and Cu-related Chindong granites: Ulsan granite has high content of K (2.68%) and Ba (636 ppm), and low content of Ca (1.07%), Mg (0.50%) and Sr (185 ppm), whereas Chindong granites has less content of K (1.62%) and Ba (382 ppm), and higher content of Ca (3.75%), Mg (1.42%) and Sr (405 ppm). However, the content of Ulsan granite overlaps partly those of Yucheon-Eonyang granites, which are apparently dividable from Chindong granites. There is an usual trend that Cu content is high in Chindong granites of Cu province and Zn content is higher in Yucheon-Eonyang granites of Pb-Zn province. But it is unusual that Cu and Zn are higher in Ulsan granite (34 ppm, 74 ppm) than in Chindong granites (15 ppm, 22 ppm) and Yucheon-Eonyang granites (14 ppm, 43 ppm). This may be due to the reason that Ulsan granite is productive and Cu-Zn minerals are associated with iron ores. Productive Chindong granites in Haman-Gunbug area and Yuchon-Eonyang granites near ore deposits have higher content of Cu and Zn than Ulsang granite. Therefore, it is expected that chemical variation patterns of granites are applicable to distinguish mineral commodity of ore deposits (iron, copper, or lead-zinc) related with the granites in the Gyeongsasng basin.
We present petrography, mineral chemistry of amphibole and plagioclase, and major and trace element chemistry for the Ogcheon metabasites occurring in the Poun and Mungyong areas to understand metamorphism, and to define chemical characteristics of parental rocks and their implication for tectonic environment. The Ogcheon metabasites often preserve relict igneous textures, although no primary phases are observed. They are mainly composed of amphibole (actinolite+hornblende)+plagioclase+epidote+chlorite+sphene+opaque oxides, indicating epidote amphibolite facies metamorphism. Coarse-grained amphiboles frequently have actinolitic composition in the core, and hornblende along the margin and cleavage, which can be interpreted either as miscibility gap or as result of polymetamorphism. Although presumed polymetamorphic events in the Ogcheon supergroup favor the latter possibility, further metamorphic studies are necessary to solve the problem. Amphibole and plagioclase chemistries suggest greenschist (epidote-amphibolite, if miscibility gap is present) to amphibolite facies metamorphism of possibly medium pressure. The major and trace element data of whole rocks indicate that the Ogcheon metabasites are transitional to tholeiitic basalts belonging to within-plate environment. Absence of evidences indicating deep sea environment suggests that the Ogcheon metabasites emplaced in an intra-cratonic, possibly rift environment which failed to proceed to an oceanic rift. Chemical variation of the metabasites toward a granitic pluton indicates K loss closer to the pluton, suggesting that caution should be taken when K is involved in a discussion.
In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating was performed on deformed granitic rocks in the Sancheong area in the northeastern part of the Jirisan area, southwest of Yeongnam Massif. Until now, these have been known as Precambrian or age-unknown old igneous rocks, but the U-Pb concordant ages obtained from two samples are $237.8{\pm}4.0Ma$ and $230.2{\pm}3.4Ma$, respectively, showing their emplacements in Early to Middle Triassic. These results indicate that the deformed granite was emplaced at about 238~230 Ma. The study area shows the characteristics of ductile deformation with prominent development of foliation, augen structure, and lineation. It is observed that the deformed granites occur as xenoliths within the syenite, indicating that the time of deformation is earlier than the intrusion of the syenite of about 220 Ma. The emplacement and deformation periods of the deformed granite is similar to that of Permo-Triassic granite gneisses distributed in the Gimcheon and Andong areas of the Yeongnam Massif. Taken together, the eastern part of the Yeongnam Massif, extending from the central part to the southwestern part, granite intrusions occurred at about 260-230 Ma, followed by metamorphism-deformation of about 230-220 Ma.
Structural and geological engineering properties of the rock mass distributed in the Yokmang mountain area were investigated to detenninc the usable cut-out volume and quarrying efficiency. The study area is located in the southern tip of the Yangsan fault system which controls the geological structure of the Kvungsang basin. As a result, the study area is mainly composed of andesicic. rhyolitic. and granitic rocks of the Cretaceous Kyungsang Supergroup and a series of right-handed strike-slip faults is developed along NNE-SSW direction. These regional faults significantly affect the spatial and meclwnical characteristics of joints such as spacing, frequency, and compressive strength. The joint frequency is highest along the fault zones and decreases toward the remote region. Based on the geological information obtained from the field survey, the detailed structure of the Yokmang mountain was analyzed and the volume of the rock mass was assessed. Considering the minimum rock block size required for the construction of a coastal dumping site, potential cut-out volume is then estimated to be 4,018,000m$^3$ the volume % of which is 48% of Yokmang mountain including the soil and weathered rock and 61% of the unweathered rock mass.
The area of the study is located in Ogcheon district, middle part of Ogcheon Fold Belt. The area is covered by metasedimentary rocks of Ogcheon Supergroup at northern, eastern and southern part. Jurassic Ogcheon granite which intruded into Ogcheon Supergroup at central part, was intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry at western part. The granite consists of quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, biotite, sphene, apatite, epidote, opaque and so on. It is generally characterized by grey to light grey, medium-grained, mafic enclave and partly weak foliation. In terms of geochmical compositions, the granite is felsic, peraluminous, subalkaline and calc-alkaline, and it was differentiated from single granitic magma. It shows parallel LREE enrichment and HREE depletion patterns with 0.84 Eu negative anomaly, which has REE variation trend and anomaly value similar to Jurassic granites in Korea. From charactristics of petrology, mineralogy and geochmistry, it may be interpreted that the Ogcheon granite body was derived from melting of I-type crustal material related to syn-collisional tectonic setting and emplaced more or less rapidly into the Ogcheon Supergroup.

In order to examine the primary trends and characteristics of geological lineaments along the southwestern boundary of Okcheon zone, we carried out the analysis of geological lineament trends over six selected sub-areas using Landsat-5 TM images and digital elevation model. The trends of lineaments is determined by a minimum variance method, and the resulting geological lineament map can be obtained through generalized Hough transform. We have corrected look direction biases reduces the interpretability of remotely sensed image. An approach of histogram modification is also adopted to extract drainage pattern specifically in alluvial plains. The lineament extracting method adopted in this study is very effective to analyze geological lineaments, and that helps estimate geological trends associated various with the tectonic events. In six sub-areas, the general trends of lineaments are characterized NW, NNW, NS-NNE, and NE directions. NW trends in Cretaceous volcanic rocks and Jurassic granite areas may represent tension joints that developed by rejuvenated end of the Early Cretaceous left-lateral strike-slip motion along the Honam Shear Zone, while NE and NS-NNE trends correspond to fault directions which are parallel to the above Shear Zone. NE and NW trends in Granitic Gneiss are parallel to the direction of schitosity, and NS-NNE and NE trends are interpreted the lineation by compressive force which acted by right-lateral strike-slip fault from late Triassic to Jurassic. And in foliated Granite, NE and NNE trends are coincided with directions of ductile foliation and Honam Shear Zone, and NW-NNW trends may be interpreted direction of another compressional foliation (Triassic to Early Jurassic) or end of the Early Cretaceous tensional joints. We interpreted NS-NNE direction lineation is related with the rejuvenated Chugaryung Fault System.

This study was carried to find out the soil characteristics of landslide site and to develope landslide prediction method by seismic refraction prospecting. For these aims, landslide condition and travel time were investigated at 68 Landslide sites over the country during 1990 to 1991. The results were as follows. 1. The surface of rupture was included mainly in C layer. Its Hardness was less than 3kg / $\textrm{cm}^2$ at the upper pare of landslide. 2. When the profile line length was 20m, the range of travel time was 40 to 90 msec. The travel time did not differ between bedrocks. 3. Refraction distance ranged from 1 to 7m and mean of that was 2.5m. Travel time was increased according to receiving distance without large variance in the refraction distance but that was appeared large variance out of the refraction distance on slope that has shallow soil depth and discontinuous ground surface. Therefore, the spread distance must be shorten to 10-l5m. 4. The seismic velocity at the first layer(layer of rupture) was less than 500m1sec by degree of weathering and the velocity at the second layer decreased in order of Granite> Granitic gneiss >Sedimentary rock. 5. The first layer observed by seismic refraction was contained C layer that has parent material and weathered rocks of hardness 10-20kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 6. Among the range of seismic velocity was less than 200m/sec in 63% of the total plots, 200-300m/sec in 34% and 300-500m /sec in 3%. 7. There was a proportional relationship between seismic prospecting soil depth and executive soil depth, and seismic propection soil depth was about 10 to 20cm deeper than the order.
