The geochemical results of the Chunyang granites located in the northeastern part of the Yeongnam Massif, indicate that these rocks have characteristics of calc-alkaline series in the sub-alkaline field, I-type and peraluminous. Most of the geochemical features in major and trace elements show systematic trends, which are similar to differentiation trends of the general Jurassic granitoids in South Korea. The Chunyang granite is largely enriched in mobile LILE (Sr, K, Rb and Ba) relatively immobile HFSE. They show LREE enriched patterns [$(La/Lu)_{CN}=41.8-73.2$] with a slightly negative Eu anomaly [$(Eu/Eu^*)_{CN}=0.89-1.10$]. There are no meaningful correlations in major and trace elements between the Chunyang granites and the Buseok plutonic rock which is the main unit of the Yeongju batholith. This result may suggest that these two plutonic rocks be not derived from the same parent magma. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate that the Chunyang granite was formed in volcanic arc environments. These geochemical characteristics results suggest that the Chunyang granite must have been generated at the active continental margin during the subduction of the Jurassic proto-Pacific plate.
This study presents the results of a regression analysis of the point-load strength ($I_{s(50)}$) and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of granites in Korea. The regression was carried out for three cases using the least-squares method, reclassifying the granite samples based on their physical properties. The first regression analysis through the origin according to the weathering grade did not give a result with a sufficient degree of confidence, due to the small number of samples. However, the general trend of the correlation between UCS and $I_{s(50)}$according to weathering grade shows that the slope of the linear regression for weathered granite is steeper than that for fresh granite. The second analysis was a simple linear regression for all the granite samples using the least-squares method as well as a linear regression using the bootstrap resampling method in order to increase the confidence level and the accuracy of the regression results. The third regression considered the average strength of granite groups reclassified according to physical properties. These linear regression analyses yielded linear regression equations with slopes of 14 and small standard deviations being similar to values reported in previous studies on Korean granites, but whose intercept values range from 16 to 43 and have a larger standard deviation than those of the present study. In conclusion, it would be advisable to estimate UCS from $I_{s(50)}$, considering the error range derived from the deviation of the regression equations.
The Naedeokri and Nonggeori granites are early Proterozoic granites of the Taebaek-Sangdong area in the northeastern part of the Yeongnam Massif. In this paper, rare earth elements (REEs) concentrations of the minerals in Naedeokri and Nonggeori granites and Rb-Sr mineral isochron age are reported. Except zircon, the constituent minerals such as mica, feldspar, quartz, and tourmaline show LREE-enriched and HREE-depleted REE patterns with relatively large Eu negative anomaly. However, zircon has geochemical characteristic of LREE- and HREE-enriched REE pattern with large Eu positive anomaly. This pattern suggests that zircon should be hydrothermal zircon due to deuteric hydrothermal alteration. In addition, the Rb-Sr mineral age of Naedeokri granite indicates an age value of 1.814±142(2σ) Ma. The Rb-Sr whole rock age including pervious data of Naedeokri and Nogggeori granite indicates an age value of 1,707±74(2σ) Ma. This value is younger than the Sm-Nd isochron of 1.87 Ga, indicating that the Rb-Sr isotope system may be re-homogenized by hydrothermal alteration during the transition from a magmatic to a hydrothermal system.
Geochemical characteristics of iron-related Ulsan granite was studied in comparison with the Cretaceous granitoids from the metallogenic provinces of copper, lead-zinc and lead-zinc/molybdenum in the Gyeongsang Basin, and the variation of cheminal compositions at the Ulsan granite/serpentinite contact was investigated. Ulsan granite is plotted in the regions of granite and granodiorite of Streckeisen's diagram. It shows differentiation trend of calc-alkali magma, and the magmatic evolution from granodiorite to granite is consistant with the general crystallization path of the Cretaceous the granitoids in Gyeongsang Basin. Differentiation index(D.I.) of Ulsan granite is 86~95, which is higher than those of Jindong granites (D.I.=45~70) and Onjongri granites (D.I.=67~84), and there are differences in the content of some major and trace elements between Ulsan granite and other Cretaceous granitoids. At the Ulsan granite/serpentinite contact $SiO_2$, $K_2O$, $Na_2O$, $Al_2O_3$, Rb, Sr, Ba which are abundant in Ulsan granite decrease toward serpentinite, while T.Fe, MgO, Ni, Cr which are abundant in serpentinite decrease toward Ulsan granite. Therefore, the geochemical characteristics of Ulsan granite is applicable to distinguish iron province from different metallogenic provinces where other Cretaceous granitoids occur in the Gyeongsang Basin, and it is possible to find serpentinite which was intruded by granite on the basis of chemical variations.

In this study, we selected three representative granite samples and conducted petrological observation to establish the Korean geostandards. Samples were taken from the two Jurassic (KJG-1, KJG-2) and one Cretaceous (KCG-1) granites in South Korea. The powder samples were prepared by the standard pulverization process, and glass beads were made for geochemical analysis using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method, and finally, major element contents of the samples were acquired. The analytical data are shown with mean, standard deviation and relative standard deviation. The accuracy of the analysis was confirmed within an estimated error range of about 5% by comparing the recommended true values of the USGS and GSJ geostandards. Also, we checked the analytical precision by calculating a relative standard deviation of about 3% from the XRF analytical results for the three samples.
Prospection was performed on the tin mineralized belt in Mwanza and Kongolo areas of Katanga, DR Congo. Most of deposits in Katanga areas are related to the granites which are located in Kibaran belt in NE and SW trends of mid Proterozoic. Metasedimentary rocks in the Kibaran belt are intruded by granites, and tin, niobium and tantalum deposits are especially developed along with tin-granite. Cassiterite, coltan and gold are developed in the pegmatite, quartz vein and greisen in related to the tin-granite in Mwanza and Katanga areas, and they are exploited by artisan in the smale scale. And we conducted the works with the alluviums and stream sediments in the case of no outcrops. With the results of analysis of samples, we will choose a few potential mineralized zones and con-tinue to prosepect precisely.
We investigated the lithology and petrography of granites and metasedimentary rocks in Deokjeok Island at the western margin of the Gyeonggi massif. The major lithology comprises the biotite granite that intrudes all other types of rocks. A minor amount of mylonitized porphyritic granite crops out along the southeastern coast. Metasedimentary rocks in the north are further divided into: (1) sheared quartzite-schist to the northeast; and (2) relatively less-deformed, low-grade metasedimentary rocks to the northwest. The former contains quartz grains showing undulatory extinction and subgrain aggregates as well as minor amount of primary chlorite and biotite in the muscovite-rich matrix. Metamorphic condition belongs to the greenschist facies or the biotite zone. On the other hand, the latter unit consists of meta-conglomerate, meta-sandstone, meta-pelite, and black slate. Regardless of the lithology, the intensity of deformation apparently increases eastward to develop the flow banding of quartz in the shear zone.
In this study, we analyzed physical properties of granites and their correlation with rock mass classification methods. The granite samples were obtained from field survey, in-situ borehole tests and laboratory tests for a design phase of various roads, railways and other civil engineering works in Korea. Among the measured physical properties, the results of unit weight, compressive strength, tensile strength, seismic velocity, cohesion, friction angle, elastic modulus and deformation modulus were introduced. We also correlated these properties with the compressive strength. The results of different rock classification method of RQD, RMR, and Q-system against the granites in Korea were compared with each other, and the correlation equations were proposed in a more simplified form. We also derived RMR values using the compressive strength as well as the RQD values of in-situ drilled cores, and estimated the deformation modulus of in-situ rock mass in terms of the RMR values.
Paleostress was interpreted by analyzing the healed microcracks and the secondary fluid inclusions in quartz of the Jurassic granites distributed in the southwestern Ogcheon Folded Belt, South Korea. The most dominant direction of healed microcracks in the study area was oriented $N30^{\circ}W$, and $N70^{\circ}W$ direction was also recognized. The formation temperatures of fluid inclusions were ranged $380-550^{\circ}C$ and the age of healed microcrack formations might have been approximately 166-200 Ma. Comparing the paleostress orientation obtained from the direction of healed microcracks to the formation age of healed microcracks estimated from the secondary fluid inclusions, it is considered that granitic rock body in study area was subject to a maximum horizontal principal stress along the NNW-SSE and WNW-ESE directions in the early Jurassic to middle Jurassic.
The Yechon shear zone developed by strike-slip movement was formed in a relatively high temperature condition just after the Jurassic syntectonic granites had been emplaced during Daebo Orogeny. Post-emplacement formation of the shear zone is favored by continuity of foliations and lineations within and without the granites, development of mylonitic structures in the wallrocks, deformation of pegmatite and felsite dikes, and pretectonic growth of porphyroblasts in the wallrocks. A variety of shear sense indicators in the shear zone are predominantly observed in the intensely to extremely deformed rocks. They show that bulk non-coaxial detormation has occurred, and that the sense of shear is consistently dextral with S-C fabrics, grain shape fabrics, asymmetric porphyroclast systems, mica fish, asymmetric extension structures and quartz C-axis fabrics.
