A Qualitative Research on the Effects of an Edu-care program for Low-income Grandparent-headed Families (저소득층 조손가정 대상의 에듀케어 프로그램에 대한 질적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the daily life of low-income grandparent-headed families and identify the effects of the Edu-Care program. To this end, the researcher conducted focus group interviews with ten grandparents and ten grandchildren who participated in the adjustment program, which was implemented for about five months. After participating in the program, the grandparents perceived that their skills for educating and raising children were improved and that they experienced psychological stability. Meanwhile, the grandchildren perceived that their learning competency and motivation for learning were enhanced and recognized why learning is necessary for their career. It was also found that the conditions and experiences needed for low-income grandparent-headed families are an integrative support program, a differentiated curriculum, and aid and care provided by human resources.

Social Support for Grandparent-headed Families and Its Effects on Grandparent Caregivers' Physical and Mental Health (조손가족에 대한 사회적 지지 실태와 조부모의 신체적 건강과 정신건강에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the level of social support for grandparent-headed families and its effects on the grandparents' physical and mental health. For this purpose, the survey data was collected from 141 grandparents raising their grandchildren in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The study generated several findings. First, grandparent-headed families tended to rely on formal support system rather than informal one. Second, grandparent's physical health was found to be very poor that 82.3% of the grandparents reportedly needed some assistance in at least one ADL, and their mean score of depression measured by CES-D was 27.4, indicating a moderate level of psychological distress. Third, among the sociodemographic and stressor variables, grandparents' sex, the number of their children and household keeping burden were statistically significant predictors of their ADL restriction. As for depression level of the grandparents, their monthly income, parenting duration, the number of their children, economic difficulties, household keeping burden and social restrictions were found to be statistically significant. Fourth, grandparents who reported of having more social support from their friends, a higher level of satisfaction of the friends' social support and also of being satisfied with social support from their religious associations tended to experience significantly less ADL restrictions. The more kinds of social support received from friends and social welfare agencies and the less satisfied they were with social support from governmental sector, the higher their depression level was. Implications for social welfare services and programs for grandparent-headed families were discussed.

Family Relations in Later Life : A Review and Prospect of Research During the Past 15 Years (노년기 가족관계에 대한 선행연구 고찰 : 현황과 과제)

  • This review synthesizes research during the past 15 years on the family relations of older persons. After discussing two background issues-sociodemographic changes of later life families and the status of the elderly-the following topics are addressed; relationships between aged parents and adult children, couple relationships, grandparents' relationship with their grandchildren and sibling relationships. Family relationships are vital support systems providing emotional and instrumental support in the lives of older persons. Mutual assistance and affection among family members were found to be common characteristics. Although research on family gerontology has increased in quantify, there are feater needs to develop qualitative, longitudinal and theory grounded studies to capture the rich complexity of family life. Other challenges and suggestions for future research on older persons' family relationship are presented.

A Study on the Research Trends and Tasks in the Development of the Education Programs for the Elderly (노년기 교육프로그램 개발의 현황과 과제)

  • Korean society with low fertility rate and high aging rate crisis has been tried very hard to find out alternatives to solve these social problems. These efforts resulted in increasing the development of education programs for the elderly. The education for the elderly have been development in various different academic fields. Therefore, this is the time to establish database for education programs which developed so far. The purpose of this study is to examine research trend in the field of education programs for the elderly in Korea. For this purpose, 62 education programs for the elderly which developed so far were analyzed. The results of this study were as followed. The topics of education programs for the elderly were divided into the following : a marriage enrichment programs for the elderly married couples, leisure programs, death education programs, health education programs, economic education programs, education programs for grandparents raising their grandchildren, etc. Based on the results of this analysis, the tasks of future research about education programs for the elderly were presented.
