  • In recent years, there has been increasing demand of ultra-fine grain graded cemented tungsten carbide material with high hardness and toughness which is used as high speed cutting tool for development in semiconductor, electronics and die/mold industry, which bring into limelight high-precision, high-efficient machining of sculptured surfaces. This paper deals with the performance of variation in the ultra-fine grain graded cemented tungsten carbide material such as grain size, hardness and density varied according to the volume of added elements, Co or TaC, and he changing of mixing, sintering process. Also, the performance of developing material with uniformed grain size of 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ is compared with other domestics' & foreign companies' with analyzing and cutting performance testing.

  • The densification and grain growth mechanisms of $UO_{2+x}$ in $H_2$ and in $CO_2$ have been investigated. Uranium dioxide powder compacts were sintered at 1$700^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ or at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in $CO_2$ for various times from 0.5 h to 16 h. The grain size and density of the specimens were measured. From the measured data, the mechanisms of the densification and grain growth were determined by use of available kinetic equations which express the relations between densification and grain growth. In both atmospheres, it has been found that the densification was controlled by the lattice diffusion and the grain growth by the surface diffusion of atoms around pores. It appears that the surface diffusivity as well as the lattice diffusivity increase considerably with the increase in O/U ratio in the specimen.

  • The sintering behavior and grain growth of ZnO in 99.0mol% ZnO-1.0mol% Bi2O3 which are the basic compositions of ZnO varistor were studied. The microstructrual observation confirmed that the final sintered density was mainly determined at the initial stage of sintering, i.e. grain rearrangement and grain growth which were induced by the penetration of eutectic melts formed at eutectic temperature(74$0^{\circ}C$). But when the liquid penetration was terminated, the grain growth did not promote further densification. Activation energy of the grain growth of ZnO in the system of 99.0mol% ZnO-1.0mol% Bi2O3 was 44.8$\pm$1.8Kcal/mol.

  • To study the effect of aggregates on the microstructure of sintered bodies, Mn-Zn ferrite powders were prepared by an alcoholic dehydration method. Aggregate powders and reground powders were used as seeds and matrices, respectively. The mixing ratios for the aggregate and reground powders were varied with the sintering temperatures. Green densities were measured with changes in forming pressure and they were related to the microstructures of the sintered bodies. The aggregates proved to be capable of acting as seeds for abnormal grain growth. When the green density difference between the aggregate and the matrix was large, the aggregate could become the seed of abnormal grain growth. As the forming pressure increased, the more aggregates became seeds of abnormal grain growth.

  • the microstructure and mechanical properties of seeded and ball-milled dry gels prepared by boehmite sol-gel method were discussed. The densification of seeded gels was improved with increasing seed content namely the number of seed The number of seed was 1.09, 3.35, 5.72${\times}$1012/cm3 boehmite when seeded with 1, 3, 5wt% respectively The ball milled gel contained about 0.5wt% seed and the number of seed was 4.72${\times}$1012/cm3 boehmite. The sintered density of 5wt% seeded gel was below 80% when sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. On the other hand that of ball milled gel was very improved and reached to 97% In the case of 3wt% seeded gels the density over 97% was attained when sintered at 1500$^{\circ}C$for 1h. and the grain of the sintered body was several micrometers in size. However the sintered body of ball milled gel showed grain size of submicrometer when sintered at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. And this specimen showed highest harness value of 1900kg/mm2 The fracture toughness increased with increasing sintering temperature. The sintered body of ball milled gel showed the largest grain size and the highest fracture toughness without regard to sint-ering temperature.

  • Plasma spray forming is recently explored as a near-net-shape fabrication route for ultra-high temperature metals and ceramics. In this study, monolithic tungsten has been produced using an atmospheric plasma spray forming and subsequent high temperature sintering. The spray-formed tungsten preform from different processing parameters has been evaluated in terms of metallurgical aspects, such as density, oxygen content and hardness. A well-defined lamellae structure was formed in the as-sprayed deposit by spreading of completely molten droplets, with incorporating small amounts of unmelted/partially-melted particles. Plasma sprayed tungsten deposit had 84-87% theoretical density and 0.2-0.3 wt.% oxygen content. Subsequent sintering at 2500$^{\circ}C$ promoted the formation of equiaxed grain structure and the production of dense preform up to 98% theoretical density.

  • In order to know how the magnetic field increases with density in interstellar clouds, we have analyzed observations of extinction and polarization for stars in the ${\rho}$ Oph molecular cloud complex. The size of grains in dense parts of the complex is estimated to be larger than the ones in diffuse interstellar clouds by about 15 percent in radii. Employing the Davis-Greenstein mechanism for grain alignment with this estimated grain size, we have put constraints on the exponent in the field-density relation $B{\propto}n^x:1/5{\leq}x{\leq}1/3$. It is concluded that magnetic field in gravitationally contracting clouds increases less steeply than the classical expectation based on the approximation of isotropic contraction with complete frozen-in flux.

  • Laboratory determination of strength and deformation behavior of clean sands and gravels has always been challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining their undisturbed samples. An alternative solution to this problem is to develop correlations between mechanical properties of cohesionless soils and their gradation characteristics. This study presents database of 3 natural sands with 11 varying particle size gradation curves to allow investigating relationships between mean particle size, maximum and minimum void ratio, relative density and shear strength of the test soils. Direct shear tests were performed at relative densities of 50, 75 and 95% to explore the effects of gradation and density on the angle of internal friction of the modeled sand samples. It is found that the mean grain size D50 bears good correlations with void ratio range (emax - emin) and peak angle of internal friction 𝜙'peak. The generated regression models are in good agreement with published literature and can be considered as reliable for natural sands in Pakistan. These empirical correlations can save considerable time and efforts involved in laboratory and field testing.

  • Effects of calcination temperature on microstructure and electric-magnetic properties of Mg-ferrite were investigated. As the calcination temperature increase, the green density and the sintered density increase due to the enhancement of densification of calcined powder. The grain size in the sintered ferrite increases with increasing the calcination temperatures from 800 to 100$0^{\circ}C$, but decreases from 1000 to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The resistivity decreases with increasing the calcination temperatures from 800 to 110$0^{\circ}C$, but increases from 1100 to 120$0^{\circ}C$ due to the microstructure which consists of small, uniform grian size and pores at grain boundaries. Magnetization increases slightly due to the increasement of the sintered density while Curie temperature is almost constant regardless of calcination temperatures.

  • This study was carried out to investigate some mechanical properties for wood rational utilization of heartwood and sapwood in radiata pine according to basic density, ring width and proportion of latewood which were grown in New Zealand. This result were summarized as follow: Heartwood showed 35.78(MPa) of the compression strength parallel to the grain while sapwood showed 42.08(MPa). The modulus of rupture in static bending was higher in sapwood showing 86.12(MPa) than in heartwood 72.99(MPa) Heartwood had 7.38(GPa) for the modulus of elasticity in static bending and sapwood 8.17(GPa). As the basic density and proportion of latewood increased: compression strength parallel to the grain, MOR and MOE in static bending had a tendency to increase. As ring width increased, the mechanical properties decreased.
