  • We have developed a multi-channel fiber laser for tiled laser beam combining and a laser output array system for multi-beam alignment. The fiber laser is a master oscillator power amplifier configuration that has a common seed, a preamplifier, and a 7-channel amplifier. The output power of each channel is more than 10 W. The laser output array system is a packed cylindrical configuration for a high fill-factor, and it has capabilities for collimation and tilt control with built-in PZT. Multi-beam alignment to a target is successfully implemented using PZT controlled with a stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a new design method of signal constellation of the spiral quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) exploiting a modified gradient descent search algorithm and its binary mapping rule. Unlike the conventional method, the new method, which uses and the constellation optimization algorithm and the maximum number of iterations as a parameter for the iterative design, is more robust to phase noise. And the proposed binary mapping rule significantly reduces the average Hamming distance of the spiral constellation. As a result, the proposed spiral QAM constellation has much improved error performance compared to the conventional ones even in a very severe phase noise environment. It is, therefore, considered that the proposed QAM may be a useful modulation format for coherent optical communication systems and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.

  • The resilient modulus (MR) of various pavement materials plays a significant role in the pavement design by a mechanistic-empirical method. The MR determination is done by experimental tests that need time and money, along with special experimental tools. The present paper suggested a novel hybridized extreme gradient boosting (XGB) structure for forecasting the MR of modified base materials subject to wet-dry cycles. The models were created by various combinations of input variables called deep learning. Input variables consist of the number of W-D cycles (WDC), the ratio of free lime to SAF (CSAFR), the ratio of maximum dry density to the optimum moisture content (DMR), confining pressure (σ3), and deviatoric stress (σd). Two XGB structures were produced for the estimation aims, where determinative variables were optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO) and black widow optimization algorithm (BWOA). According to the results' description and outputs of Taylor diagram, M1 model with the combination of WDC, CSAFR, DMR, σ3, and σd is recognized as the most suitable model, with R2 and RMSE values of BWOA-XGB for model M1 equal to 0.9991 and 55.19 MPa, respectively. Interestingly, the lowest value of RMSE for literature was at 116.94 MPa, while this study could gain the extremely lower RMSE owned by BWOA-XGB model at 55.198 MPa. At last, the explanations indicate the BWO algorithm's capability in determining the optimal value of XGB determinative parameters in MR prediction procedure.

  • Waste foundry sand (WFS) is the waste product that cause environmental hazards. WFS can be used as a partial replacement of cement or fine aggregates in concrete. A database comprising 234 compressive strength tests of concrete fabricated with WFS is used. To construct the machine learning-based prediction models, the water-to-cement ratio, WFS replacement percentage, WFS-to-cement content ratio, and fineness modulus of WFS were considered as the model's inputs, and the compressive strength of concrete is set as the model's output. A base extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model together with two hybrid XGBoost models mixed with the tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA) and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) were applied. The role of TSA and SSA is to identify the optimum values of XGBoost hyperparameters to obtain the higher performance. The results of these hybrid techniques were compared with the results of the base XGBoost model in order to investigate and justify the implementation of optimisation algorithms. The results showed that the hybrid XGBoost models are faster and more accurate compared to the base XGBoost technique. The XGBoost-SSA model shows superior performance compared to previously published works in the literature, offering a reduced system error rate. Although the WFS-to-cement ratio is significant, the WFS replacement percentage has a smaller influence on the compressive strength of concrete. To improve the compressive strength of concrete fabricated with WFS, the simultaneous consideration of the water-to-cement ratio and fineness modulus of WFS is recommended.

  • Style transfer based on neural network provides very high quality results by reflecting the high level structural characteristics of images, and thereby has recently attracted great attention. This paper deals with the problem of resolution limitation due to GPU memory in performing such neural style transfer. We can expect that the gradient operation for style transfer based on partial image, with the aid of the fixed size of receptive field, can produce the same result as the gradient operation using the entire image. Based on this idea, each component of the style transfer loss function is analyzed in this paper to obtain the necessary conditions for partitioning and padding, and to identify, among the information required for gradient calculation, the one that depends on the entire input. By structuring such information for using it as auxiliary constant input for partition-based gradient calculation, this paper develops a recursive algorithm for super high-resolution image style transfer. Since the proposed method performs style transfer by partitioning input image into the size that a GPU can handle, it can perform style transfer without the limit of the input image resolution accompanied by the GPU memory size. With the aid of such super high-resolution support, the proposed method can provide a unique style characteristics of detailed area which can only be appreciated in super high-resolution style transfer.

  • Due to the scaling of process parameters, the density on chips has been increasing. This trend increases not only the temperature on chips but also the gradient of the temperature depending on distances. In this paper, we propose the balanced skew tree generation technique for minimizing the clock skew that is affected by the temperature gradients on chips. We calculate the interconnect delay using Elmore delay equation, and find out the optimal balanced clock tree by modifying the clock trees that are generated through the DME(Deferred Merge Embedding) algorithm. We have implemented the proposed technique using C language for the performance evaluation. The experimental results show that the clock insertion point generated by the temperature gradient can be lowered below 54% and we confirm that the skew is remarkably decreased after applying the proposed technique.

  • Purpose: To investigate and compensate the effects of respiration-induced B0 variations on fat quantification of the bone marrow in the lumbar spine. Materials and Methods: Multi-echo gradient echo images with navigator echoes were obtained from eight healthy volunteers at 3T clinical scanner. Using navigator echo data, respiration-induced B0 variations were measured and compensated. Fat fraction maps were estimated using $T2^*$-IDEAL algorithm from the uncompensated and compensated images. For manually drawn bone marrow regions, the estimated B0 variations and the calculated fat fractions (before and after compensations) were analyzed. Results: An increase of temporal B0 variations from inferior level to superior levels was observed for all subjects. After compensation using navigator echo data, the effects of the B0 variations were reduced in gradient echo images. The calculated fat fractions show significant differences (P < 0.05) in L1 and L3 between the uncompensated and the compensated. Conclusion: The results of this study raise the need for considering respiration-induced B0 variations for accurate fat quantification using gradient echo images in the lumbar spine. The use of navigator echo data can be an effective way for the reduction of the effects of respiratory motion on the quantification.

  • This paper is about the digital image decimation algorithm which generates a value of decimated element by an average of a target pixel value and a value of neighbor intelligible element to adaptively reflect the merits of ZOD method and FOD method on the decimated image. First, a target pixel located at the center of sliding window is selected, then the gradient amplitudes of its right neighbor pixel and its lower neighbor pixel are calculated using first order derivative operator respectively. Secondly, each gradient amplitude is divided by the summation result of two gradient amplitudes to generate each intelligible weight. Next, a value of neighbor intelligible element is obtained by adding a value of the right neighbor pixel times its intelligible weight to a value of the lower neighbor pixel times its intelligible weight. The decimated image can be acquired by applying the process repetitively to all pixels in input image which generates the value of decimated element by calculating the average of the target pixel value and the value of neighbor intelligible element.

  • Bacterial chemotaxis is essential to the study of structure and function of bacteria. Although many studies have accumulated the knowledge about chemotaxis in the past, the motion of a single bacterium has not been studied much yet. In this study, we have developed a device microfabricated by soft lithography and consisting of microfluidic channels. The microfluidic assay generates a concentration gradient of chemoattractant linearly in the main channel by only diffusion of the chemicals. Bacteria are injected into the main channel in a single row by hydrodynamic focusing technique. We measured the velocity of bacteria in response to a given concentration gradient of chemoattractant using the microfludic assay, optical systems with CCD camera and simple PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) algorithm. The advantage of this assay and experiment is to measure the velocity of a single bacterium and to quantify the degree of chemotaxis by statistically analyzing the velocity at the same time. Specifically, we measured and analyzed the motility of Escherichia coli strain RP437 in response to various concentration gradients of L-aspartate statistically and quantitatively by using this microfluidic assay. We obtained the probability density of the velocity while RP437 cells are swimming and tumbling in the presence of the linear concentration gradient of L-aspartate, and quantified the degree of chemotaxis by analyzing the probability density.

  • Henry System which is a traditional fingerprint classification model is difficult to apply to a modem Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). To tackle this problem, this study is to apply algorithm for an An Ensemble Fingerprint Classroom System using changes of gradient of ridge in order to improve precise joining speed of a large volume of database. The existing classification system, Henry System, is useful in a captured fingerprint image of core point and delta point using paper and ink. However, the Henry System is unapplicable in modem Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) because of problems such as size of input sensor and way of input. This study is to suggest an Ensemble Fingerprint Classroom System which can classify 5 basic patterns of Henry System in uncaptured delta image using changes of gradient of ridge. The proposed fingerprint classification technique will make an improvement of precise joining speed by reducing data volume.
