Larvae of the gunnel Pholis fangi were collected in coastal waters off Daecheon with a bag net from March to June, 1988, and with a ring larva net in February 1989. Maturity and spawning period were analyzed by examination of the gonads of adult fish collected with a bag net from May 1998 through November 1999. In February, the larvae were widely distributed in the outer and inner Cheonsu Bay. From March to April the larvae were present mainly the inner bay; they were absent there in May and found mainly in the outer bay. After June, few gunnel larvae were collected in the study area. This suggests a seaward movement of gunnel from the nursery grounds of the bay to offshore feeding grounds. The otolith of larvae smaller than 10 mm in total length did not show a distinct growth stop. The growth stop is believed to be formed in the early larval stage when the total length is about 10 mm. This period coincides with the time of shoreward migration, suggesting a metabolic change during this period. At a total length of 30 to 40 mm, the shape of the otolith changes from spherical to elongate. Daily growth rate in length was estimated by the Gompertz equation, which is represented as follows: TL = 6.702exp{2.925"1-exp (-0.008 t)"} ($r^2=0.94$, N = 92) Assuming daily deposition of growth increments in the otolith, the time of first growth increment formation was shown to be from December to January. Gonad observations show that Pholis fangi spawns from November to December. So, the hatching time is thought to be about one month.

We investigated the maturity and spawning of black edged sculpin, Gymnocanthus herzensteini caught by gillnet in the East Sea from March 2003 to February, 2004. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), gonad weight (GW), egg diameter, fecundity, total length at 50% group maturity and sex ratio. The spawning period was December to February. The fecundity ranged form 8,814 eggs at 14.7 cm (TL) to 25,560 eggs at 24.4 cm (TL). The relationship between total length (TL) and fecundity (F) was $F=285.11TL^{1.4092}$ ($R^2$ =0.571) and fecundity increased with total length. The total length at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 15.25 cm. The sex ratio was 60 for female and 40 for male, where the female population was seen to be slightly predominant. For sex ratio by length class, male was a little predominant in small size, but female was 90% more than 24 cm.
Backcross hybridization between female cyprinid loach(Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) any male mud loach (M. mizolepis)$\times$cyjprinid loach hybrid were made, and its effect on early survival, cytogenetic traits, and gonad development were examined. Mean fertilization rate and hatching success of backcross hybrids were similar to those found in the maternal species, the cyprinid loach. However, the backcross hybrids revealed significantly improved early survival up to yolk sac absorption (86.0%) compared to cyprinid loach (0%) under low culture temperature ($15^{\circ}C$). the erythrocytic size and DNA content of backcross hybrids were nearly intermediate to those of the parents. Karyological analysis of backcross hybrids displayed two kinds of modal chromosome number of 2n=48 or 2n=49. Growth of backcross hybrids over 6 months after hatching was proven to be intermediate between their parental species. Although backcross hybrids had intermediate values between those of thier parents in most morphometric traits, overall external morphology of backcross hybrids was morer simlar to cyprinid loach than mud loach$\times$cyprinid loach hybrid. Histological examination of gonads at 2 and 4 months of age revealed that no female was obseved in backcross hybrid groups, suggesting the possibility of production of monosex male population.
Maturity and spawning of Crangon affinis were studied based on the histological observation. The samples were monthly collected in Nakdong estuary from June, 1988 to May, 1989. The gonad lies on the dorsal side of the thorax. The cavity in which it lies is located below heart and above hepatopancreas. Anterior part of ovary is fused roundly, and the posterior part shows a pair of tubule-like structure. Testis is bilaterally symmetrical; the anterior part shows convoluted tubule, and the posterior part consists of a pair of tubule. Seminal vesicle is connected and opened to the base of the fifth pereiopod. Gametogenesis of ovum and spermatozoon is being repeated in short period without seasonality, and it is formed simultaneously in the whole parts of germinal epithelium. Diameter of a ripe oocyte is ca. $430{\mu}m$. Spermatozoa is oval with distinct nucleoplasm. Reproductive cycle is performed in ca. 40 days. Crangon affinis spawns all year round except November. Incubation period of brooded eggs took $12\~14$ days before hatching in the aquarium at $21^{\circ}C\~24^{\circ}C\;and\;33\%_{\circ}$.
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) gene is expressed at the anterior pituitary gland and plays a key role in gonad development. This study aimed to investigate molecular genetic characteristics of the GnRHR gene and elucidate the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of GnRHR gene on sex steroid level in Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). We used polymerase chain reaction single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and sequencing of the GnRHR gene in 75 individuals. We identified three SNPs in the GnRHR gene: P1 locus (C759A and C830T) in the coding region of exon2 which were both linked together and P2 locus (G984T) in the coding region of exon3, which added a new transcript factor (ADR1) and a new methylation site (CG). Only C830T of P1 leads to amino acid changes Thr266Ile. Statistical analysis showed that P1 was significantly associated with $17{\beta}$-estradiol ($E_2$) level (p<0.01) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) (p<0.05). Individuals with genotype BB of P1 had significantly higher serum $E_2$ levels (p<0.01) and GSI (p<0.05) than those of genotype AA or AB. Another SNP, P2, synonymous mutation, was significantly associated with GSI (p<0.05). Individuals with genotype AB of P2 had significantly higher GSI (p<0.05) than that of genotype AA. In addition, there was a significant association between one diplotype based on three SNPs and reproductive traits. The genetic effects for both serum $E_2$ level and GSI of diplotype D4 were super diplotypes (p<0.05). These results suggest that the SNPs in Japanese Flounder GnRHR are associated with $E_2$ level and GSI.
To clarify the annual reproductive cycle of the banded catfish, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson), the seasonal changes in histological aspect of gonad and liver were examined. The adult fish was raptured from the upper stream of Young-San river, Chunnam in each month from May 1992 to June 1993. Based on the annual changes in GSI (gonadosomatic index), HSI (hepatosomatic index), CF (condition factor) and histological aspects of the gonads, the annual reproductive cycle were classified into 5 periods as follows: 1) Growing phase (from April to early May): The value of GSI increased and the size of oocytes in perinucleolus stage in oocytes increased gradually. Spermatogonia were developed actively from the epithelial tissues of seminiferous tubules. 2) Maturing phase (from Hay to early June): GSI levels increased rapidly in both sex. Oocytes at various developmental stages were observed. Appearance of active spermatogenesis were observed. 3) Mature and spawning phase (from June to August): High values of GSI remained static and oocytes accumulated significant quantitis of yolk globules. 4) Degenerating phase (from September to November): GSI levels decreased and ovaries were filled mostly with oocytes at the perinucleolus stage. Hepatic cells accumulated significant amounts of lipid droplets. 5) Resting period (from December to March) : Low values of GSI were kept and the size of oocytes at the perinucleolus stage did not increase. Spermatogenesis was not observed.

This paper describes seasonal changes of total length, hepatosomatic index (HSI), fatness, egg-diameter composition, and fecundity of the longchin goby Chasmichthys dolichognathus(HILGENDORF). The specimens used were captured in the tide pool of Tongbaekseom, Pusan, Korea from February 1983 to January 1984. The age of longchin goby, tested by size frequency, was believed to be usually one year which grows to 8.0 cm in total length. The annual variations of HSI reached the maximum in the early spring when the gonad was actively growing and decreased during the spawning season from April to July. The coefficients of fatness were represented low values for the spawning periods. Frequency distribution of the egg diameter of mature ovary has three modes: one is the evident mode of the ripe eggs group, and the other two are modes of maturing and immature eggs groups. And an individual is considered as spawns one in the spawning season. Relationships between the fish size in total length (TL cm) and the number of ovarian eggs(F), the fish weight (BW g) and the number of ovarian eggs are indicated by the exponential equation respectively : F=42.585 $TL^{1.608}$, F= 524.589 $BW^{0.475}$.
The estrogen receptor-related receptors (ERRs) are a group of nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. ERRs and estrogen receptors (ERs) have overlapping affinities for coactivators and DNA binding sites, but differ markedly in ligand binding and activation. The three mammalian ERR genes have been implicated in diverse physiological processes ranging from placental development to maintenance of bone density, whereas the molecular diversity, function, and regulation of ERRs in non-mammalian species are not well understood. In the present study, to investigate the involvement of ERR in transcription and embryogenesis in marine invertebrates, a cDNA encoding ERR (SnERR) was cloned from the gonad in Strongylocentrotus nudus, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The amino acid sequence of SnERR showed high homology with that of S. purpuratus (91%). A phylogenetic tree clearly showed that SnERR is a member of the ERR family and clustered in echinodermata group as supported by a high bootstrap value. We examined gene expression of SnERR during embryonic development of S. nudus using real-time PCR. During the embryonic development, the mRNA of ERR was significantly high levels in early development stages (4~64 cell) and larval stages. The SnERR slightly activated transcription through the classical estrogen response elements (EREs) in the presence of genistein. In addition, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor $\gamma$ coactivator (PGC)-$1\alpha$ knwon as a coactivator of ERR enhanced the snERR-mediated transactivation, suggesting that the PGC-$1\alpha$ is a coactivator of SnERR.

Sea urchin S. intermedius occurring in the Korean east coast is a cold water species that belongs to the family Strongylocentrotidae of Echinoidea. Although it is known that there are nine species in the family, species identification criteria, phylogenetic relationships, time and process of evolution of the family members have not been uncovered clearly. In the present study, I tried to find some clues to such problems for S. intermedius by means of DNA sequences. For this, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), one of the mitochondrial genes that evolve fast and follow maternal inheritance was analyzed. DNA was extracted from the female gonad of S. intermedius, a segment of COI gene amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and finally a total of 1077 base pair sequence of COI obtained by cloning and sequencing the PCR product. The sequence was compared with homologous genes of other sea urchins and echinoderm species. Phylogenetic trees of the COI gene segment revealed that S. intenedius is a sister species of S. purpuratus which lives along the east coast of the Paciflc. With reference to the fossil records of sea urchins and genetic distances in the molecular phylogenies, it is estimated that the two species were separated about 0.89 million years ago when the earth temperature fluctuated significantly. The current disjunct distribution patterns of the two species and the climate change of the earth at the time of separation suggest that speciation might have occurred by vicariance. The COI gene sequence obtained here now can be used as a molecular character which discerns S. intermedius from the other sea urchin species of Strongylocentrotidae.
This study was conducted to identify optimistic primordial germ cells'(PGCs) migration activity using heat activated busulfan treatment for the increasing germline chimerism. Donar PGCs viability tests of important conditions for useful germ line chimerism indicated approximately $70{\sim}80%$ viability was time dependent. Transplantation experiments of PGCs into recipient embryos after busulfun treatment, showed the treatment group having 23.5% viability. By comparison, the control group showed 4.8% viability. The 96 hour treatment group and the 118 hour treatment group of the cultured PGCs showed high migration activity. Generally, the transplantation method would consider morphological and physiological characteristics before transplantation. In the present study, the effect of busulfan on migration activity showed viability highest at 53.4% after 48-hour incubation time. However, a previous study showed the best condition for transplantation time to be prior to the 48-hour incubation period, when the chicken embryo does not yet have a developed blood vessel system. In conclusion, an important condition for the production of a transgenic chicken is that most donor PGCs migrate into the recipient embryo without any inhibitory factors. The present results suggest, perhaps by using this modified method of transplantation, it can produce a more efficient chimeric germ line, transgenic chicken.
