  • A study was carried out on the elelctrochemical characteristics of chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) by cyclic voltammetry. Fabrication of CMEs was made by coating with mixed valence (mv) inorganic-metal polymeric films on the glassy carbon electrode surface by potential cycling. Anodic oxidation behavior of methanol and L-ascorbic acid was studied by using CMEs working electrode. Deposition of films such as mv ruthenium oxo/ruthenium cyanide film (mv Ru-O/CN-Ru), mv ruthenium oxo/ferrocyanide film (mv Ru-O/$Fe(CN)_6$), and mv ruthenium oxo/ruthenium cyanide/Rhodium film (mv Ru-O/CN-Ru/Rh) was obtained to coat by scan rate of 50 mV/sec within the specified potential range (-0.5V ~ +1.2V). Film thickness was controlled by the repeat of the potential cycling. Anodic oxidation behavior of methanol was as follow. Calibration graph by using mv Ru-O/CN-Ru film showed linearly from 10 mM to 80 mM MeOH with slope factor of $-7.552{\mu}A/cm^2$. Although slope factor by using mv Ru-O/$Fe(CN)_6$ film was $-5.13{\mu}A/cm^2$, yet linear range of calibration graph could be extended from 10 mM to 100 mM MeOH. Anodic oxidation behavior of L-ascorbic acid was studied by mv Ru-O/CN-Ru film on the glassy carbon electrode and the glassy carbon electrode with Rh film, Glassy carbon electrode modified with Ru polymeric film was showed better sensitivity than the Rh-glassy carbon modified electrode (mv Ru-O/CN-Ru/Rh). Calibration graph was linear from 0.1 mM to 5 mM L-ascorbic acid by using glassy carbon electrode modified with Ru polymeric film. Solpe factor and relative coefficient are $-84.78{\mu}A/mM$ and 0.998, respectively.

  • The catalytic activity of poly[(2,2'-bipyridine)copper(II)-μ4-oxalato] coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for O2 electroreduction is examined using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques. The cyclic voltammograms show that O2 is electroreduced on pBpCuOx-coated GCE surfaces at a peak potential of ? 0.25 V in pH 4.7 acetate buffer media. The electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE occurs at 450 mV more positive potential than that found at a bare GCE. The catalytic activity originates from Cu(II) coordinated by bipyridine in the complexes and the polymer type Cu-complex films exhibit an enhanced stability compared to monomeric Cu-complexes during the O2 electroreduction. The rotating disk electrode measurements reveal that the electroreduction of O2 on pBpCuOx-coated GCE is a four-electron process. Kinetic parameters for O2 reduction on pBpCuOx-coated GCE are obtained from rotating disk experiments and compared with those on bare glassy carbon electrode surfaces.

  • Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using nafion-coated glassy carbon electrodes modified with Tetren(tetraethylene pentamine)-glycerol showed sensitivity for determining lead (II) at low concentration. The Lead (II) was accumulated on the electrode surface by the formation of the complex in an open circuit, and the resulting surface was characterized by medium exchange, electrochemical reduction, and differential pulse voltammetry. Various experimental parameters, such as the composition of modifier, preconcentration time, pH of electrolyte (0.1 M acetate buffer), and parameters of differential pulse voltammetry, were optimized. The initial potential was applied for 50 s, the electrode was scanned from -0.9 to -0.3 V, and the anodic peak current was measured at -0.604 V $\pm$ 0.015 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The calibration plot was obtained in the range 1.0$\times$10$^{-8}$ M~l.0$\times$10$^{-6}$ M with pH 4.5 buffer solution. The detection limit (3$\sigma$) it as low as 5.0$\times$ 10$^{-9}$ M. This method is applied to the determination of lead(II) in a certified reference material and the result agrees satisfactorily with the certified value.

  • This study is concerned the electrocatalytic generation of oxygen gas at electrochemically deposited manganese oxide electrode in KOH solution. Manganese oxide nanoparticles electrodeposited onto relatively substrate, e.g glassy carbon, Au, Ti electrode. MnOx is electrodeposited in nanorod structure which cover the overall surface of the substrate. The $\gamma$-MnOOH that is kind of manganese oxide species plays a significant role as a catalytic mediator, which promote 4-electron reduction process. Modified electrodes with electrodeposited manganese oxide structures resulted in significant decrease in the anodic polarization compared with the unmodified electrodes in alkaline media.

  • A method for the determination of lead(II) ion using a nafion-EDTA(ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid)-glycerol modified glassy carbon electrode was proposed. Lead(II) ion is accumulated at the electrode by complexation and electrostatic attraction with nafion-EDTA-glycerol and detected at -0.560$\pm$0.015V (vs. Ag/AgCl) by differential pulse voltammetry. For the determination of lead(II) ion, a standard calibration curve if obtained from 10$^{-9}$ M lead(II) ion to 10$^{-7}$ M, and the detection limit(3s) is as low as 5.0$\times$10$^{-10}$ M.

  • A glassy carbon electrode(GCE) modified with nafion-DTPA (diethylene triamine-pentaacetic acid)-glycerol is used for the highly selective and sensitive determination of a trace amount of Cu(II). Various experimental parameters, which influenced the response of nafion-DTPA-glycerol modified electrode to Cu(II), are optimized. The Copper(II) is accumulated on the electrode surface by the formation of the complex in an open circuit, and the resulting surface is characterized by medium exchange, electrochemical reduction, and differential pulse voltammetry(DPV). The electrochemical response is evaluated with respect to concentration of modifier, pH and preconcentration time, quiet time, copper(II) concentration, and other variables. A linear range is obtained in the concentration range 1.0${\times}$10$^{-8}$ M-1.0${\times}$10$^{-6}$ MCu(II) with 7 min preconcentration time. The detection limit(3s) is as low as 2.36${\times}$10$^{-8}$ M (1.50 ppb).

  • Catalytic effects of transition metal (Co2+, Ni2+) complexes of N,N-bis(salicylaldehyde)-o-phenylenediimine (SOPD), N,N-bis(salicylaldehyde)-m-phenylenediimine (SMPD), and N,N-bis(salicylaldehyde)-p-phenylenediimine (SPPD), on the reduction of thionyl chloride at glassy carbon electrode, are evaluated by determining the kinetic parameters with cyclic voltammetric technique. The charge transfer process for the reduction of thionyl chloride is strongly affected by the concentration of the catalysts. Some quadridentate Schiff base-M(Ⅱ) complexes show sizable catalytic activities for the reduction of thionyl chloride. Catalytic effects of [M(Ⅱ)(SOPD)] complexes are slightly larger compared to [M(Ⅱ)2(SMPD)2] and [M(Ⅱ)2(SPPD)2] complexes. On those electrodes deposited with the catalysts, the observed exchange rate constants (ko) are in the range of 0.89-2.28 × 10-7 cm/s, while it is 1.24 × 10-7 cm/s on the bare glassy carbon electrode.

  • An electrochemically-modified electrode [P(EDOP-SWNTs)/GCE] was prepared by electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxy pyrrole (EDOP) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and characterized by SEM, CV, and DPV. This modified electrode was employed as an electrochemical biosensor for the selective determination of serotonin concentrations at pH 7.4 and exhibited a typical enhanced effect on the current response of serotonin with a lower oxidation overpotential. The linear response was in the range of $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-5}$ M, with a correlation coefficient of 0.998 on the anodic current. The lower detection limit was calculated as 5.0 nM. Due to the relatively low currents and difference of potentials in the electrochemical responses of uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AA), and dopamine (DA), the modified electrode was a useful and effective sensing device for the selective and sensitive serotonin determination in the presence of UA, AA, and DA.

  • Schiff base ligands such as $SOPDH_2$, $SNDH_2$, $EBNH_2$, and $PBNH_2$ and their Co(II) complexes such as [$Co(II)(SND)(H_2O)_2$], [$Co(II)(SOPD)(H_2O)_2$], [$Co(II)(EBN)(H_2O)$], and [$Co(II)(PBN)(H_2O)$] have been synthesized. The mole ratio of Shiff base ligand to cobalt(II) for the Co(II) complexes was found to be 1:1. Also these complexes have been configurated with hexa-coordination. Reduction of dioxygen was investigated by cyclic voltammetry at glassy carbon electrodes modified with Schiff base Co(II) complexes in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. At modified glassy carbon electrode with Schiff base Co(II) complexes, reduction peak current of oxygen was increased and peak potential was shifted to more positive direction compared to bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrokinetic parameters such as number of electron and exchange rate constant were calculated from the results of cyclic voltammogrms. The reduction of dioxygen at glassy carbon electrode has been $2e^-$ reaction pathway. Exchange rate constant at glassy carbon electrode modified with Co(II) complexes was increased 2~10 times compared to bare electrode.
