To obtain information about knowledge and attitude toward sex, sexural experience and need of sex education, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 599 students who were attended in 2nd grade of 2 girls' high schools(A group: 190 girls), 2 vocational girls' high schools(B group: 205 girls), and 2 special girls' high school attached to industrial company(C group: 204 girls) in Taegu city between 20th and 25th April 1992. Mean score of knowledge toward sex of the total was 9.3. Mean score of A group was higher than that of Band C groups. Among the total students, vocational high school girls were the highest affirmative attitude towards the acquaintance and relationship with the other sex, and the next was special high school girls. Students of B group assumed the highest negative attitude towards artificial abortion, and the lowest was A group. Among the respondent girls, 31.1% did not experienced in the acquaintance and relationship with the other sex and 86 girls(14.4%) had experience with sexual affairs. Most of girls(96.9% of A group, 90.4% of B group and 86.8% of C group) agreed to necessity of sex education, and answered that current education on sex was insufficient to them(80.6% of A group, 82.6% of B group and 62.4% of C group). Among what the surveyed girls wanted to know about knowledge towards sex, they showed the highest interest on the acquaintance and relationship with the other sex(A group: 44.7%, B group: 45.4%, C group: 56.4%). And they showed the second highest interest on pregnancy and delivery(A group: 33.2%, B group: 32.6% , C group: 26.5%). There was no unique difference among each surveying item. Most of the students(A group: 46.8%, B group: 40.1%, C group: 36.3%) thought it better that the time they wanted to get education on sex in 5th or 6th grade of elementary schools and to have a regular curriculum on sex education.
This research analyzed the iron status, clinical symptoms and physical characteristics between normal and anemic group of middle school girls in the Ulsan metropolitan area. It was carried out with 237 subjects (normal 190, anemic subject 47). They were evaluated with a questionnaire and measurement of hematological indices. BMI $(kg/m^2)$ of the two groups were $19.54{\pm}2.44$ (normal girls) and $19.22{\pm}2.27$ (anemic girls). The hemoglobin concentration of the anemic girls were $10.84{\pm}1.17g/dl$ and the serum iron of the anemic girls represent $35.15{\pm}27.47{\mu}g/100ml$. The TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) of the anemic girls showed significantly high to $449.30{\pm}64.87{\mu}g/100ml$. The serum ferritin of the anemic girls was $20.53{\pm}42.29{\mu}g\ell$, it represented significantly low. The symptom of 'pale face' of the anemic girls were higher than the normal girls. Hemoglobin and serum iron were negatively correlated with 'pale face'. The TIBC was negatively correlated with 'Get a cold easily'. The duration and amount of menstruation were correlated with iron status. This research is to be utilized as basic data for dietary support and nutritional education to improve their iron status.
In order to develop an obesity management program for teenagers, we compared obese and non-obese girls attending high schools in terms of their dietary practices related to snack consumption. Dietary records were collected for 7 days. No significant differences were found for the average daily energy intake between obese and non-obese girls. However, the highest energy intake was greater for obese girls while not much difference was found for the lowest amount of energy intake. Obese girls had significantly lower intakes in calcium (P < 0.01), vitamin A (P < 0.001) and folate (P < 0.01). Mean energy intake from snack ($594.1{\pm}312.1kcal$) was significantly higher for obese girls than for non-obese girls ($360.1{\pm}173.1kcal$) (P < 0.001). A significant, positive correlation was observed between energy intake from snack and total daily energy intake (r = 0.34 P < 0.01) only for obese girls. In case of dietary behaviors, obese adolescent girls consumed significantly greater number of items for snacks and fewer foods for regular meals compared to non-obese girls (P < 0.05). This study suggested that obesity management programs for adolescents should focus on providing strategies to reduce snack through enhancing balanced regular meals.
Purpose: This study was performed to identify the difference in attitudes and knowledge between high school and college girls regarding sexual education. Method: Data was collected from questionnaires given to 99 high school girls and 110 college girls in Seoul and Kyunggi-do. Data was analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program. Result: In middle school, the time given to sexual education influenced the students present knowledge of sexual education. The sources of sex education were friends, seniors and mass media. The score for sexual knowledge in high school girls was 12.78 and for college girls 24.19. The field that obtained the highest score in territorial sexual knowledge was 'reproductive physiology' in the high school girls. There was little awareness of venereal disease, AIDS, contraception. Sexual attitudes among college girls was more open than that of high school girls. There was a positive correlation between sexual knowledge and attitudes(r=.535, p<.001). The significant difference of items were residence and sexual experience(p<.001). Conclusion: This study was shown that realistic knowledge teaching of venereal diseases, contraception and AIDS should be included in planning of sexual education programs. Specially, the groups had sexual experience and college girls in the dormitory will need more specific teaching.
The purpose of this study was to compare the growth development between age-matched 51 postmenarcheal girls (mean age 153.1$\pm$5.8 month) who were rapidly maturing and 51 premenarcheal girls (mean age 153.1$\pm$5.7 month) who were slowly maturing. Anthropometirc measurements were taken for height, body weight, body fat(%), waist and hip circumferences of subjects. These measurements of menarcheal girls were significantly higher than those of nonmenarcheal girls. There was no significant difference in BMI distribution between two groups. However, 43.2% and 20.0% respectively in the menarcheal and nonmenarcheal girls had body fat levels of 30% or above. There were significant differences in the anthropometric measurements during past 4 years from 3rd grade elementary school to present. The greatest difference between the two groups were the amount and the rate of increased height and body weight from age 9 to 10. Among menarcheal girls, height, body weight, BMI, and Röhrer index were positively related to the onset of menarche. Distinctively, there was a stronger relationship between age at menarche and anthropometric measurements when the girls were 5th grade elementary school children. These findings support that during childhood and puberty, obese girls grow faster and have earlier menarche. Furthermore, the importance of prevention of obesity was recognized in order to accelerate growth of height among the girls by delaying the age of menarche.
Relationships between peer acceptance, peer victimization, and self-esteem in adolescents were examined in a sample of 392 eighth grade students(189 boys and 203 girls). Data were collected using questionnaires regarding peer acceptance(social preference and social status), peer victimization, and self-esteem of adolescents. High social preference was positively related to self-esteem. Social preference varied as a function of social status both in boys and in girls. Popular boys had higher self-esteem than neglected and rejected boys; popular girls had higher self-esteem than neglected girls, who had higher self-esteem than rejected girls. The more boys and girls were victimized by peers, the lower their self-esteem. The higher their social preference, the less they were victimized. Rejected boys and girls experienced peer victimization much more than either popular or neglected boys and girls.
This study used qualitative methods to understand kindergarten girls' perception of block play and to devise teacher strategies for encouraging block play for girls who had not participated in block play. Results showed that girls preferred art and home-dramatic play over block play. Girls' preference not to play with blocks was based on harassment by boys and confusion about how to build with blocks and the fact that pride in block structures could not be communicated to their parents at home. Consequently, a girls-only block play area was designed with appropriate accessories along with presentation of some Polaroid pictures. Results were that girls enjoyed block play and made ingenious block structures.
A statistical study was carried out in order to find out the correlation between various factors affecting the attitude of young college girls to their marriages, such as their environment and the degree of their parent's satisfaction in their marriage life. For the study, 264 college girls were sampled at random from the population of college girls in Daejeon area. The instruments used in the research are questioning paper , which the investigators made. Following correlations were found as a result. (1) a significant correlation between the birth order of girls and those of male mate and earlier marriage in the bigger residential district. (2) Preferrence in larger family planning tendency in the group of girls from large family and vice versa in the group of girls little educated mothers. (3) More traditional attitude to future marriage planning in the group of girls of lower birth order and with better economical background. (4)There were no significant correlations between the degree of their parent's satisfaction and their marriage life planning.
The purpose of this study was to examin height, weight and body composition nutrient intakes and serum lipids for high school girls in urban and fishing area. The subjects consisted of 78(44 fishing and 34 urban) high school girls aged in average 17.3 and 17 years. Their dietary intakes were assesed for 1 day by means of 24 hours dietary recall method. Concentrations of serum lipids, percentage of body fat and volume of total body water were measured. The mean energy intake of the subjects were 1431 ㎉ in fishing and 1659 ㎉ in urban area. The subjects in fishing area(urban) consumed 58(67) g protein, 27(36) g lipid, 459(634) mg calcium, 676(945) mg phosphorous, 11(14) mg iron, 786(574) RE retinol, 2.8(3.6) mg tocopherol, 0.9(1.0) mg thiamin, 1.2(1.1) mg riboflavin, 16.9(20.5) mg niacin and 64.1(92.8) mg ascorbic acid, respectively. Energy, calcium, iron and tocopherol intakes were lower than the Korean RDA in both girls. The mean percentage of fishing girls were 19.8% and significantly lower than 25.6% in urban. These values seem to fall in the desirable range in fishing girls, but high school girls in urban is seemed to overweight. The mean saturated fatty acid(SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid(MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acid(PUFA) and dietary cholesterol(Chol) intakes were 7.3 g, 8.1 g, 7.2 g and 263 mg for fishing girls were 13.1 g, 12.1 g, 9.1 g and 216 mg for urban girls respectively. The fat, SFA and MUFA intakes in fishing girls were significantly lower than urban girls. The P/M/S ratio was 0.9/1.1/1 for fishing, was 0.7/0.9/1 for urban. The mean serum triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol concentrations were 77.7(61.8) mg/dl, 124.5(142.3) mg/dl, 59.3(22.4) mg/dl and 49.6(107.8) mg/dl in fishing girls(urban girls), respectively. All of these values seem to fall in the desirable range but HDL-chlesterol concentrations in fishing girls were significantly higher than urban girls and LDL-cholesterol concentrations in fishing girls were significantly lower than urban girls. There were positive correlations between body fat percent and total cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol concentration : negative correlations between between body fat percent and HDL-cholesterol concentration : positive correlation between fat intake and LDL-cholesterol concentration : negative correlations between serum HDL-cholesterol concentration and fat or SFA or MUFA intakes. The normal lung volumes were determined and subdivided under sitting position in 48 middle school girls, 49 high school girls and 44 house wives. All subjects were free of pulmonary and vascular diseases. The vital capacity was measured by Mckessons spirometer and the residual volume was determined by Rahn's three breathing method. 1. The lung volumes (BTPS) of middle school girls determined were: $RV\;0.59{\pm}0.11l\;FRC\;1.45{\pm}2.22l\;VC\;2.68{\pm}0.29l$ 2. The lung volumes (BTPS) of high school girls determined were: $RV\;0.83{\pm}0.19l\;FRC\;1.9{\pm}0.25l\;VC\;3.15{\pm}0.24l$ 3. The lung volumes (BTPS) of house wives determind were: $RV\;0.95{\pm}0.61{\ell}\;FRC\;2.1{\pm}0.25{\ell}\;VC\;3.06{\pm}0.29l$ 4. The calculated residual ratio $(RV/TLC{\times}100)$ were: $17.7{\pm}2.57%$ in middle school girls and $20.6{\pm}3.65%$ in high school girls and $24.0{\pm}2.31%$ in house wives 5. The functional residual ratio $(FRC/TLC{\times}100)$ were: $43.7{\pm}5.98%$ in middle school girls and $48.8{\pm}4.41%4 in high school girls and $52.6{\pm}5.38%$ in house wives. 6. The correlation coefficients between vital capacity and total lung capacity were r=0.96 in middle school girls and r=0.986 in high school girls and r=0.856 in house wives. 7. The regression equations were obtained follows: $TLC(l) =1.105{\times}VC+0.304$ (in middle school girls) $TLC(l) =1.551{\times}VC-0.902$ (in high school girls) $TLC(l) =0.999{\times}VC+0.954$ (in house wives)
