The purpose of this study was to analyze the oral symptoms experienced by adolescents according to Body Mass Index. We analyzed the data using the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and conducted complex-sample descriptive statistics on 55,728 participants. The prevalence of sensitive teeth, tooth pain, gingival bleeding, and swelling was highest in the overweight group (36.8%, 23.9%, and 19.2%) and lowest in the underweight group (34.6%, 20.8%, and 17.0%) (p<0.001). Tooth pain, gingival bleeding, and swelling were significantly higher (all 1.08) in the overweight group than in the normal group. Halitosis was 1.19-and 1.43-higher in the overweight and obese groups, respectively. The relationship between systemic diseases and oral health among adolescents should be further investigated.

Purpose: The congenital epulis is a rare, benign tumor. It can protrude out of the newborn's mouth to prevent normal closure of the mouth and it can interfere with respiration or feeding. Methods: An 11-day old female neonate presented with a $1.5\;{\times}\;1.5\;{\times}\;2.3cm$ sized mass in the gingival and anterior alveolar ridge of the mandible. We performed a simple excision. Results: In our case, histologically, there was no pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. The staining for S-100 protein, and actin was negative. After 8 months, the patient had normal teeth eruption and no recurrence of the tumor. Conclusion: With early detection and appropriate treatment, we were able to help the baby avoid developing any dyspnea. Nursing was possible after the mass had been removed.
A mass was detected in the oral cavity from a 18-year-old female miniature poodle dog. Grossly, the mass was soft to hard, red to purple, and $1.5{\times}1.5{\times}1cm$ in size. Histopathologically, the mass was composed of hyperplastic gingival epithelium, well-vascularized stroma, closely packed pleomorphic cells, and numerous giant cells with multiple nuclei and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for alkaline phosphatase and cytokeratin 7, but not positive for CD68 unlike in human. The mass was diagnosed to peripheral giant cell granuloma in oral cavity through typical clinical and histopathological features.

Maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma is a relatively rare disease, comprising only 3% of malignant diseases of head and neck. As the growth rate is high and its prognosis is poor compared to others, the 5-year survival rate of maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma(MSSCC) is 23.4-49%. We introduce two rare clinical cases of squamous cell carcinoma originated from maxillary sinus of which symptoms include toothache and gingival swelling. On clinical examinations of both patients, deep periodontal pockets on upper right posterior teeth were detected. On panoramic images, the bony destruction of the maxillary sinus and its surrounding structures were not obvious and only alveolar bone loss was noted. It is difficult to diagnose MSSCC at an early stage due to symptoms of tooth pain and gingival swelling that are similar to that of periodontal diseases. However, if the symptoms do not improve after routine treatment of upper teeth, dentists should bear in mind of underlying malignant mass as differential diagnosis, thus early detection of the lethal disease. The aim of this study is to caution dental practitioners that malignancies have a potential to mimic periodontal diseases by introducing two cases of maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma presented as periodontitis.

PURPOSE. Bonding agents (BA) are the crucial weak link of composite restorations. Since the commercial materials' compositions are not disclosed, studies to formulize the optimum ratios of different components are of value. The aim of this study was to find a proper formula of BAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. This explorative experimental in vitro study was composed of 4 different sets of extensive experiments. A commercial BA and 7 experimental formulas were compared in terms of degree of conversion (5 experimental formulas), shear bond strength, mode of failure, and microleakage (3 experimental formulas). Statistical analyses were performed (${\alpha}$=.05). The DC of selected formula was tested one year later. RESULTS. The two-way ANOVA indicated a significant difference between the shear bond strength (SBS) of two tissues (dentin vs. enamel, P=.0001) in a way that dentinal bonds were weaker. However, there was no difference between the four materials (P=.283). The adhesive mode of failure was predominant in all groups. No differences between the microleakage of the four materials at occlusal (P=.788) or gingival (P=.508) sites were detected (Kruskal-Wallis). The Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference between the microleakage of all materials (3 experimental formulas and a commercial material) together at the occlusal site versus the gingival site (P=.041). CONCLUSION. A formula with 62% bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA), 37% hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 0.3% camphorquinone (CQ), and 0.7% dimethyl-para-toluidine (DMPT) seems a proper formula for mass production. The microleakage and SBS might be respectively higher and lower on dentin compared to enamel.

Objective: Assess and evaluate the different indicators of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among patients treated with clear aligners (CAs) versus those treated with conventional fixed orthodontics (FAs). Methods: An electronic search was performed on the database is Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases. Randomized and non-randomized control trials, cross-sectional, prospective cohort and retrospective trials were included. Quality was assessed with risk of bias tool and risk of bias in non-randomised studies. Meta-analyses were performed with random effects models, estimating the standardized and non-standardized mean differences, odds ratio and risk ratio as the measure of effect. The effect on time was determined using a meta-regression model. Results: Thirty one articles were included in the qualitative synthesis and 17 in the meta-analysis. CAs had a significantly lower negative impact on QoL, with an "important" effect size, while the influence of time was not significant. Periodontal indicators plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), and bleeding on probing show significantly better values in patients treated with CAs, with moderate to large effect sizes. PI and GI have a significant tendency to improve over time. In microbiological indicators, CAs present a lower biofilm mass without differences in the percentage of patients with high counts of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli bacteria. The risk of white spot lesion onset is ten times lower in carriers of CAs. Conclusions: Patients wearing CAs show better periodontal indicators, less risk of white spot development, less biofilm mass and a better QoL than patients with FAs.

The authors observed a 27-year-old male patient who came to the Infirmary of Kyungpook National University Hospital who had complained of dull pain in right mandibular angle area 1 month ago. As a result of careful analysis of clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings, the authors diagnosed it as Ewing's sarcoma and obtained the results as follows: 1. In clinical examination, main clinical symptoms were continuous dull pain and gingival swelling on the 2nd and 3rd molar area of the right mandible. 2. In radiographic examination, ill-defined radiolucent area was seen on mandibular right angle area, and apparent periosteal reaction of sun-ray spicule was emanated from the lingual cortex of mandibular angle area. And computed tomograph also revealed moderate-defined 3. soft tissue mass of the same area. In histopathological examination, small round-shaped, and closely packed cells with scanty cytoplasm were observed in this specimen, and positive reaction in PAS staining was also observed.
Background: Incorrect administration of an anesthetic during local anesthesia is one of the most important causes of pain symptoms in patients scheduled for dental procedures. The current study assessed the severity of damage to periodontal tissue following different rates of anesthetic administration. Methods: The research was conducted on 50 outbred male rats with a body mass of 180-240 g. The anesthetic used was 1% articaine. Results: The results showed that administration of the anesthetic at a rapid pace caused structural damage to the periodontal tissue. Further, signs of impaired microcirculation were noted at all rates of administration. Biochemical studies demonstrated changes in the level of glucose and enzymes with the rapid introduction of the anesthetic, indicating severe systemic stress response of the body. Conclusions: Injection of local anesthetic at any rate of introduction induces vascular congestion in the microcirculatory bloodstream and exudative reactions. Rapid introduction of an anesthetic causes progression of structural changes in the gingival tissue.
Carbondioxide($CO_2$) laser is one of the most widely employed lasers in oral soft tissue surgery because of its excellent affinity for water based soft tissues. It has some inherent advantages such as hemostasis, less postoperative swelling, reduction of bacterial population at surgical site, less need for suturing, less scarring, and less postoperative pain compared to conventional surgical therapies including the use of scalpel, diathermy, cryotherapy and electrosurgery. A 30-years-old male was presented with gingival swelling. Clinical examination revealed a well?defined pedunculated fibrotic mass on the buccal gingiva near right maxillary 1st molar. In radiographic examination, no remarkable abnormality was seen. Excisional biopsy was performed with $CO_2$ laser (continuous wave mode, 4.0W). Histological diagnosis was "Irritation fibroma". $CO_2$ laser has advantages those are suitable for surgical treatment of intraoral lesion. If appropriate training and experience are provided, the dentist would be able to manage intraoral lesions more efficiently and successfully with the use of the $CO_2$ laser.

The odontoma is a hamartoma of odontogenic origin and consists of enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp tissue. Two types of odonotma are histologically recognized: complex and compound. Odontoma may be the cause of noneruptoin or impaction of teeth, formation of cyst and resorption of adjacent bone. The recommended treatment for an odontoma is conservative surgical excision. No propensity for recurrence has been noted. Peripheral odontoma is relatively rare lesion and shows the histological characteristics of an intraosseous odontoma. This report described a 3-year-old Korean girl with a firm gingival mass in the posterior mandibular area, which had been gradually enlarging over 18months. Radiographic examination showed a radiopaque mass but no evidence of underlying intraosseous lesion. Excisional biopsy was performed for the mass removal and histopathological examination. The result of histopathological study was identified as hamartous supernumerary tooth germ. Based on the clinical presentation, radiographic and histopathologic findings, we concluded that the final diagnosis was peripheral odontoma. For three years after surgery, there is no clinical sign of recurrence.
