For an effective management of fisheries resources, we need fisheries informations necessary for the establishment of reasonable fishing effort and TAC distribution. To study the present state of by-catch and discard of gill-net fishery in the East Sea, we carried out fishing research using trammel nets in the coastal sea of Susan-port (Yangyang), Jangho-port (Samcheok) and Hupo-port (Uljin). As a result, a total of catch of Susan was 259,172g and that of Hopo was 577,638g. Thus Catch of Susan was 1.49 times more than that of Hupo considering the number of used fishing gear. And catch of Janho was 7.4 times more than that of Susan considering the number of experiment. Two methods of by-catch analysis in this study were used, one method is standardizing of listed species catching possible in fishing license, another method is regarding catch species under 1% of total catch as by-catch. As a result of by-catch analysis of two method, by-catch rate of Susan was 6.55% and 5.87% respectively, that of Hupo was 44.70% and 5.24% and that of Jangho was 0.96% and 2.31%. Discard rate of fish in Susan, Hupo and Jangho were 1.59%, 3.42%, 2.23% respectively.

Globally, the survival of many marine mammals is threatened by entanglement in fishing gear and there is also a high bycatch in Korea. This study analyzed the bycatch data of most cetacean species for Korean waters from 2011 to 2017, including the narrow-ridged finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis, common dolphin Delphinus delphis, common minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata, and Pacific white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus obliquidens. A total of 12,262 cetaceans were captured as bycatch. In the Yellow and South Seas, the main species affected was the narrow-ridged finless porpoise, with 82.9% caught in stow nets and 11.5% captured in trawls. In the East Sea, the common minke whale, common dolphin, and Pacific white-sided dolphin were reported. The main common minke whale bycatch (43.5%) was in set nets, while common dolphins (49.0%) and Pacific white-sided dolphins (91.4%) were mainly caught in gill nets. The narrow-ridged finless porpoise, common dolphin, and common minke whale were most commonly reported in March, April, and May, while the Pacific white-sided dolphin was most frequently captured as bycatch in January and December. Each of these factors (season and gear responsible for bycatch) depended on the characteristics of the cetacean species. To conserve cetaceans, it is necessary to reduce the bycatch.
Fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Gampo in the East Sea of Korea were analyzed using the samples of fishes collected with bottom trammel gill nets June, September, and December 2005 and, March 2006. During the study period, a total of 32 fish species, 695 individuals, and 180,012.0 g representing 21 families were collected. The fish assemblages predominantly consisted of Ditrema temminckii, which accounted for 52.4% of the number of individuals and 40.4% in the biomass. The next major specimens were Hexagrammos otakii, Sebastes schlegelii, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Sebastes taczanowskii, Halichoeres poecilopterus. These six fishes accounted 77.6% of total number of individuals and 77.5% of total biomass. The number of fish species, the number of individuals and biomass were fluctuated with month. The number of species was highest in June 2005 and lowest in March 2006. The number of individuals and biomass was highest in September 2005 and lowest in June 2005.
According to the result of the recent survey on the current condition of loss of the fishing gears in the East, West and South seas, it is estimated that 50% of the fishing gears used for coastal trap and gill net fisheries are lost every year and 20~30% of those used for inshore trap and gill net fisheries are lost. It is reported that such loss of fishing gears leads to the loss of about 10% of 1.7M tons of the total annual catch from the gill nets and traps along the country's coasts and shores, which amounts to 15~170K tons. Submerged marine litters that have recently been accumulated because of the washed out or lost fishing gears significantly affect the development of fisheries resources as well as the natural environment. The purpose of this study is to identify the damages that the ever-increasing submerged marine litters of washed out fishing gears would have on the fishery and to analyze the effects of the coastal and inshore submerged marine litter collection business on the fishery management. For this, the economic analysis was carried out for the coastal and inshore submerged marine litter collection business based on the fishermen's expenses and earnings and their catch. The result of the analysis shows that the submerged marine litter collection business is quite effective in certain areas but rarely effective in other areas. However, taking into consideration that the litter collection would contribute to protecting the marine environment as well as the fisheries resources, it is expected to have a significant impact on the protection of the marine environment even in those areas where it is not effective for the protection of the fisheries resources.

As part of a series of studies about improving yellow croaker drift gill net fishing gear and the development of a labor-saving fishing system, we installed a labor-saving-type, five-step-drum net hauler, and a triple-V-type net hauler in 108 Daeheung-ho, a fishing boat which operates drift gill nets for yellow croakers mainly in the sea near Chu-ja Island. Net damage with the labor-saving-type, five-step-drum net hauler is lower than for the triple-V-type net hauler. In addition, there was a reduction in the standard operational crew of two people. The lead time for hauling the labor-saving net was approximately 10% and 19.2% less than for hauling the triple-V-type net hauler and for hauling by hand, respectively. It was found that there were fewer slip in fishing gear and less damage to the wing of the drum as well as less damage to the fish when the labor-saving-type, five-step-drum net hauler was used than when the triple-V-type net hauler was used. In the survey, the lead time for hauling the net was approximately 21.6% and 45.2% more effective than hauling with the triple-V-type net hauler and hauling by hand, respectively. The crew was reduced by approximately 18.2% and 25% than when hauling with the triple-V-type net hauler and hauling by hand, respectively. In addition, cessation of operation and damage to the fish were reduced when compared to the triple-V-type net hauler and hauling by hand.

A series of fishing experiments was carried out in the waters off the east coast of Korea from January, 2002 to March, 2003, using gill nets of different mesh sizes (m = 180, 210, 240, 270, and 300 ㎜) to determine the size selectivity of gill net for male snow crab Chionoecetes opilio. The maximum carapace length (RL) of each male snow crab caught in the fishing experiment was measured. The master curve of mesh selectivity was estimated by applying the extended Kitahara's method. Two kinds of functional models, quadratic function and cubic function were used to express logarithmic selectivity curve and were fitted to the data using the method of least squares. The obtained results were summarized as follows; 1. The cubic function of asymmetry was chosen to determine the selectivity curve of gill net for male snow crab from the model deviance comparison. 2. The result of size selectivity showed that the catch number of small male crab was getting decreased according to the increase of mesh size. 3. The optimum value (RL/m) was 0.549 and the RL/m was estimated to be 0.281, 0.296, and 0.356 when the retention probability were 0.2, 0.25 and 0.5, respectively.
This acoustic experiment noted that fish species in Chilam-Gijang marine ranching area were more densely distributed in the pelagic zone during nighttime than daytime. In each season, the gill nets caught 15 different fish species and the estimated average target strengths were -44.0 dB and -44.4 dB for autumn and winter surveys, respectively. The estimated autumn fish biomass were 7.7 tons and 26.0 tons during daytime and nighttime, respectively. Winter biomass was 2.27 tons and 30.97 tons during daytime and nighttime, respectively. Different fish species form schools that exhibit different movements and behaviors, and thereby occupy varying water layers. These results explained the estimated fish biomass, and variation with seasons and time of the surveys around artificial reefs in Chilam Bay, Korea.
In this study, Echo-sounder($E_s$) monitoring methodology was applied to test environmental impacts of artificial weirs(SCW and JSW) in the Yeongsan River on fish community and habitat structures at first time, and was compared with conventional fish sampling methodologies($C_s$). For the Es monitoring in the fields, parallel transect methods was employed in determining the survey distance interval with every 125 m within the upper-lower 2 km of the weirs. Four different fish sampling gears such as casting nets, kick nets, fyke nets, and gill nets were used for applications of $C_s$ monitoring methodology. According to the Echo-sounder monitoring, fish density, expressed as a number of individuals per square meter, along the longitudinal axis of the weir was significantly greater(JSW, t = 3.506, n = 30, p < 0.001) in the down-river reach of the weir than in the up-river reach. Also, fish density along the vertical water column was highest at mid-depths of Seungchon weir, which has simple habitat substrates, while fish density was highest at hypolimnetic depth of Juksan weir. According to fish sampling by the $C_s$ methodology, the fish compositions decreased as the river goes upward, and significant differences(JSW, t = 0.248, n = 30, p < 0.05) in the compositions of fish species occurred between up-reach and down-reach of the weirs. The dominant species near the two weirs were Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis, Hemiculter eigenmanni and Coilia nasus. Overall, our fish and habitat data, based on $E_s$ and $C_s$ monitoring methodologies, suggest that the weirs disturbed the rivers due to initial habitat disturbances by the weir constructions as well as the barrier roles of weirs on fish passage and migrations. More long-term scientific and systematic fish impact monitoring and assessments($E_s$ and $C_s$) are required in the future to predict changes of ecological structures and functions on the constructions of the weirs.

Bycatch and stranding of sea turtles from Jeju coastal water of Korea were monitered from 2008 to 2009. A total of 41 sea turtles, consisting of 12 greens (Chelonia mydas), 3 loggerheads (Caretta caretta), 1 hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and 25 unidentified species, were recorded and observed in those area. Reported stranding and bycatch reached to a peak in August. The largest number of bycatch occurred in the coastal waters around Aewol-eup located in northwest area of Jeju Island. Most of the bycatch were taken by set nets and gill nets, which prevailed over the fishing grounds in the coastal waters of the Jeju Island. It is suggested that an appropriate monitoring system be necessary to conserve endangered sea turtle species in Jeju of Korea.

Biodegradable polybutylene succinate(PBS) is an environment friendly plastics for fisheries, because it can mitigate the ghost fishing problem caused by gill-net and trap fisheries. To evaluate photodegradability of PBS monofilament in comparison with polyamide(PA) and polyethylene(PE) monofilament, these 3 types of monofilaments were spun and exposed to ultraviolet light(UV) of weather-ometer for 900 hours, and then their modification, crystal structure, strength, and extensibility were analysed. PBS monofilament did not show any crack and maintained its crystal structure after 900 hour exposure to UV whereas PE monofilament began showing cracks and structure modification after 600 hour exposure. Under UV exposure, the strength and extensibility decreased more rapidly in PBS than in PA and PE. We estimate that gill nets made of PBS monofilament can endure for about 1 year. The breaking strength and elongation decreased linearly with the exposure time for the 3 types of monofilaments. The derived regression equations of the residual tenacity(RT, kg/$mm^2$) and the residual extensibility(RE, %) with the exposure time in year(Y) for each monofilament were; PBS : RT=48.598 - 8.6437Y($R^2=0.93$), RE=28.165 - 7.3233Y($R^2=0.98$), P A : RT=59.771 - 8.6437Y($R^2=0.98$), RE=32.198 - 5.2772Y($R^2=0.92$), P E : RT=60.898 - 5.6528Y($R^2=0.98$), RE=11.887 - 0.7188Y($R^2=0.98$).
