We have analyzed the science-gifted educational program (year 2002) at the Seoul National University in terms of its educational objectives, scientific models, and cognitive processes in scientific inquiry in order to provide insights into developing and improving science-gifted educational program. We assumed the following items as important factors for teaching scientifically gifted students: higher-order thinking skills involving synthesis domain in the educational objectives, highly abstract nature and complexity in the scientific models, cognitive processes of planning experiments in the cognitive processes in scientific inquiry. According to the analyzed results, the program has the following characteristics: (1) the rates of both higher and lower-order thinking skill domain in the educational objectives are similarly high, but the rate of synthesis domain is relatively low; (2) in the case of the scientific models, the rate of the multiple concepts and/or processes model is relatively low, while the level of the abstractness is relatively on average (3) cognitive processes of authentic scientific inquiry is not thoroughly reflected in the scientific inquiry activities, and very few cognitive processes of planning experiments factor is reflected. Therefore, we conclude in the synthesis domain in the educational objectives, multiple concepts and/or processes model, and cognitive processes of planning experiments should be especially reflected more on the science-gifted educational program in order to serve the needs of scientifically gifted students.
The purpose of this study is to develop learning materials and teaching model for the gifted, and to examine the improvement of creativity of them in middle schools. Subjects were 126 gifted students, who were the 7th or 8th graders and have been taught in gifted classes of the adjacent Education Institute for the gifted of Boryeong Education Districts, Chungnam Province Office Of Education. Divisions of gifted Classes were logical reasoning, mathematics, foreign language, science. After the instruction of project-based task, gifted students had improved creativity. Especially, instruction using project-based task was more effective on scientifically gifted students. Most gifted students were satisfied with the instruction using project-based task, and attractive in it. Finally, it was suggested that the instruction using project-based task should be actively used for the gifted students.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship creativity and motivation. The subjects were 297 gifted students, selected in the examination for entrance to the Science Education Institute for the Gifted located Jeonbuk. To compare the gifted students' creativity and motivation with the normal students', this study used the standardized test, the Creativity Inventory for Students(by Choi & Lee, 2004) and Multi-Dimensional Learning Strategy Test(by Park, 2006). The major results of this study were as follows; First, The gifted students group was high group in the creativity, and especially the gifted girls were significantly higher than the gifted boys. Second, learning motivation of the gifted students were high or than the normal students and the gifted students were inclined to cope actively to challenge situation rather than avoid. Third, The Creativity showed the positive relationship with learning motivation, the negative relationship with avoid motivation, and moderate relationship with competitive motivation. This result suggested that it is very important to encourage gifted students to the intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic motivation like competition or achievement in education.
This study was conducted in order to investigate how a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) program titled(called) 'Designing Safe and Strong Bridge' effects scientifically gifted students' scientific attitude, scientific career orientation and leadership. The participants were 19 scientifically gifted students in the second grade in C high school in Gyeonggi province; they were selected by participation in the tri-level gifted students identification step. Before and after 14 units of the program, the participants were asked to take tests about scientific attitude, scientific career orientation and leadership and to write a review about the PBL program at the end. The major results of this study are as follows. First, participants' scientific attitude was statistically significantly improved after the PBL program (p<.05). In the sub-domain of this area, six parts excluding the part of openness were significantly developed. Second, the degree of scientific career orientation was statistically significantly improved after the PBL program (p<.05). All 4 sub-domains in the degree of scientific career were significantly developed. Third, all of leadership scores were statistically significantly increased after the PBL program (p<.05). In the first factor, the parts of inner and inter personal characteristics were significantly developed. According to their post-program opinions, participants developed in terms of all the secondary factors, such as ability of interpersonal relation, consideration for others and groups, responsibility for the task, confidence and vision, during the process of PBL problem-solving in the small group work.

The purpose of this study is to figure out how much gifted science education teachers in charge of the class realize the necessity of individualized curriculum and program for scientifically gifted, to find out the problems of the gifted science educational institutions from exploring them in depth in the light of the reality in the gifted science educational institutions, and to draw implications about the applicable direction of more aggressive individualized curriculum and program for scientifically gifted. I chose 15 people with the incumbent teachers who have ever taught scientifically gifted and have a degree in the gifted education or science subject education as study participants and had a depth interview with them. According to result of the study, 14 of 15 study participants recognized the necessity of individualized education in science should understand the personal requirements according to the tendency of the gifted students and should be a study led by students themselves. Of the problems in gifted science education, teachers regarded the reduction in the financial support as the biggest problem and the vocation and professionalism of teachers were referred as a very important factor. With constraints of time and space, there were plenty of opinions that can't ignore the influence of educational environment associated with the university entrance examination. There were many opinions that there is excessive expansion of the agencies and the target for gifted students, no standardized measurement tools and programs and the lack of the system for the coherent observation as a teacher. Also, the unified curriculum of gifted science education institutions were pointed out as the problem and the individualized programs which were already under way have a lot of weakness and being offered marginally. Thus, from now on, to apply for individualized education of gifted science, teachers demanded optimized education conditions and consistent policy support, and expressed the opinion that there needs of a possible continuous observation system. Besides, the curriculum and programs matched the needs of the students should be taken priority the most, and there were another answers that fellow learning within the cooperative learning can be an alternative of the individualized. Along with that, there were lots of opinions that the treatment to overcome an inferiority complex according to the individualized should be followed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics that indicate scientifically gifted students by analyzing the verbal interactions in developmental biology inquiry-experimental classes. The subjects were 20 first-grade middle school students who were participating in SNU Science Gifted Education Center. In these experimental classes which were developed based on the CPS Model, we conducted a total of four experimental sessions of small group discussions, and the students' verbal interactions were both taped and video recorded, and observed. From the transcriptions, the patterns of question-answer and the characteristics of scientifically gifted students were analyzed. In the case of question-answer patterns, thinking questions appeared 3~6 times more frequently than the standard information questions. Especially, the case of experimental class I showed 40% more thinking questions as well as standard information questions that the other 3 classes. Through the results of analysing verbal interactions, we were able to find more detailed aspects to creativity that were not identifiable in paper-pencil examinations, as well as affective characteristics such as task commitment and leadership. We believe our findings upon inquiry will be of substantial significance in substituting for the paper-pencil examination in distinguishing and selecting scientifically gifted students.
What are the critical factors in deciding future career to the gifted and talented students? The present study started with this question, and was to develop a career decision-making scale for scientifically gifted undergraduates. For this, literatures related to the scientifically gifted/talent and scientists' career decision-making were reviewed and examined in depth. Based on the review of the related literature, the developed scale of career decision-making was comprised of 26 items in 6 factors, such as individual aptitude & self-realization, economic aspect, work & leisure, familial influence, parents/teachers' recommendation, and experience of science activity during the school days. For the preliminary exploratory factor analysis, 153 undergraduate students who were majoring in natural sciences and engineer participated in the study. For the confirmatory factor analysis, 264 undergraduates who were awarded the presidential scholarships and 93 undergraduates who completed a university-affiliated gifted education center participated. The results of the study are as follows. The fit of measurement model was found to be $x^{2}$=645.157 (df=279, p=.00), TLI=.924, CFI= .935, RMSEA=.061, indicating most of fit indexes were acceptable. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ in each sub-factor was quite high, .82 for individual aptitude & self-realization, .94 for economic aspect, .84 for work and leisure, .88 for familial influence, .79 for patents/ teachers' recommendation, and .79 for experience of science activity during the school days. The results of the study were discussed whether the developed scale could be used as a valid and reliable tool for measuring career decision-making factors of the scientifically gifted undergraduates in our country.
In this study, selecting process for scientifically gifted students was investigated and analyzed to science education institute for the gifted in university and was compared with foreign education institute for the gifted. The number of science education institute for the gifted was unequality located to the regions, comparing with the ratio of students. Therefore it is necessary for balancing location of science education institute for the gifted according to the ratio of students to let various students have the gifted education. Comparing with the ratio of gifted students between elementary school students and middle school students, the shape of ratios seems to be a inversed-pyramid. It is necessary to select students with the shape of the pyramid, supporting them to be educated, systematically and officially. Overexcitability (OE) and social self-concept are the integral affective characteristics of science-gifted students. Overexcitability refers to sensitivity as an internal disposition to give a more often, longer and more intensive reaction to a wide variety of stimuli, and social self-concept refers to the way of behaving in society, especially at school in the case of students. The purpose of this study was to examine the overexcitability and social self-concept of science-gifted and non-gifted elementary school students. The subjects in this study were 135 gifted elementary students belonged to gifted education centers or gifted classes and 91 ordinary elementary students. An overexcitability test and a social self-concept test were conducted to the subjects, and the collected data were analyzed by SPSS. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the score of the science-gifted was significantly higher than that of the ordinary students in all sub-domain of OE (psychomotor OE, sensual OE, emotional OE, intellectual OE, emotional OE) and social self-concept. Second, the science-gifted students who attended gifted education centers and community gifted classes scored significantly higher than the ordinary students in overexcitability. Based on conclusions, implications for teaching the science-gifted were discussed.

In the present study we have compared and analyzed three different measures of creativity in 135 gifted and 161 normal students to understand the nature of creativity and to propose the guideline for measuring creativity. The instruments used to measure creativity in this study are the Torrance Test of Creativity Thinking (TTCT), the Test of Creative Problem solving and Finding in Science (CPFS), and the Creative Behavior Checklist in Science (CBCS). The TTCT is the most widely used divergent thinking test and measures creativity in the aspect of domain-generality. The CPFS and the CBCS were developed for the purpose of this study and measure domain-specific creativity in the area of Science. The findings of this study revealed that gifted students are significantly more creative compared to normal students in all measures of creativity used in the study. The biggest difference between the gifted and normal students was found in the aspect of CPFS. This study implies that creativity, which is considered less useful to identify gifted students compared to achievement or IQ scores, is the important factor to consider for judging giftedness. The low correlations revealed among the TTCT, CPFS, and CBCS imply that the three measures of creativity address relatively different aspects of creativity. The results also suggest that it is essential to consider multiple criteria of creativity not to overlook potential creative students in the area of science. Implications of the study in connection with the identification and educational practices for gifted education program is discussed.
