An independent determination of H0 is crucial given the growing tension of the Hubble constant (H0). In this work, we present a new determination of H0 using velocities and Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) distances to 33 galaxies in front of the Virgo Cluster. We model the infall pattern of the local Hubble flow modified by the Virgo mass, as a function of the H0, the radius of the zero-velocity surface R0, and the intrinsic velocity scatter. Fitting velocities and TRGB distances of 33 galaxies to the model, we obtain H0 = 65.6 +/- 3.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (sys) km/s/Mpc and R0 = 6.96 +/- 0.35 Mpc. Our local H0 is consistent with the global H0 determined from cosmic microwave background radiation, showing no tension.
Presolar silicon carbide (SiC) grains form around in the envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars by satisfying C/O>1 which is an optimal condition for SiC grains to condense in the stellar outflows. Ruthenium (Ru) isotopes are locked into the SiC grains during the condensation of SiC grains. We investigate the isotopic compositions of Ru in the stellar winds by using the NuGrid data, which are obtained by nucleosynthesis calculations during the stellar evolution. We compare the isotopic compositions of Ru obtained from the NuGrid data with measurements and the predictions obtained from different codes. Our results present a piece of evidence that SiC grains in the presolar system came from low-mass and low-metallicity AGB stars, also confirming that they were not from massive stars. We also suggest a new scenario in which the total stellar yields are also considered because SiC grains can condense during the collapse of molecular clouds.
Strain Kan-23 was extracted from nematophagous fungi, which were isolated from the soil sample of oriental melon field. The strain exhibited the slow-growing characteristic forming conidia after prolonged incubation for 30 days. Morphological features of strain Kan-23 were observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). It possesses erect conidiophores which contain $2{\sim}3$ side branches, with each branch producing $5{\sim}10$ conidia. The size of conidiophores were between $160{\sim}450\;{\mu}m$. Conidia were ellipsoidal with three septa[septum] in each conidium. Strain Kan-23 captured nematodes by means of giant constricting rings, which were observed in the glucose peptone agar medium. ITS region of rDNA sequence was analyzed. On the basis of the high sequence similarity of ITS region (99%), the Kan-23 strain was closely related to Drechslerella brochopaga (U51950). This is the first report on Drechslerella brochopaga as a nematophagous fungus in Korea.
We use BV CCD images to study the dynamical substructure of the globular cluster M5. We investigate the radial variation of ellipticities and position angles using the stellar photometry and the IRAF ellipse task. We find that out to three times the half light radius $(r_h)$, the changes in ellipticities and position angles range in $0.05\~0.25$ and $75^{\circ}\~-75^{\circ}$, respectively. There are no significant discrepancy in the dynamical substructure beyond $r_h$ among the different giant populations. However, compared to the global dynamical substructure of M5, the inner $(<0.5r_h)$ substructure of the bright red giant and the horizontal branch populations show slightly different patterns. Especially, the discrepancy of the bright red giant population with respect to the global substructure, ranges up to 0.1 for the ellipticity and 1000 for the position angle.
For the well observed 16 globular clusters with known metal abundance (Z), the helium abundances (Y) and ages are determined by various methods, and the relations between Y, Z and age are examined. The luminosity $L_{RR}$ of RR Lyrae stars is known to be dependent of evolutionary models and pulsation theory in the sense that the pulsation theory and horizontal branch (HB) models yield the anticorrelation between $L_{RR}$ and Z whereas main sequence (MS) and red giant branch (RGB) models yield the direct correlation between them. Similarly the anticorrelation between Y and Z is obtained from the HB models and pulsation theory whereas the direct correlation between them is obtained when the RGB model is applied. The current evolutionary models yield the anticorrelation between Z and age of clusters whenever the direct correlation between Y and Z holds. However when the anticorrelation between Y and Z is applied for age determination, the similar age of clusters is obtained as shown by Sandage (1982b). The ages, which are determined by the fitting of C-M diagrams to isochrones in the ($M_v$, B-V)-plane, suggest the two different chemical enrichment processes, which could be accounted for by the disk-halo model for the chemical evolution of the Galaxy (Lee and Ann 1981). Also it is known that the R-method is very useful for Y-determination and the derived Y's show the increasing rate of $\frac{{\Delta}Y}{{\Delta}Z}{\simeq}0.5$ which is comparable to the observed value of $\frac{{\Delta}Y}{{\Delta}Z}{\simeq}0.3$ from HII regions and planetary nebulae by Peimbert and Torres-Peimbert (1976). In this case, the age-metallicity relation of globular clusters could be explained by the disk-halo model.
More than 22,300 stars in NGC 6752 were measured over the region of 5' < r < 23' in B and V AAT plates. The most of these are main sequence(MS) stars and about 130 blue horizontal branch(BHB) stars were detected. The C-M diagram of all measured stars shows gaps appearing at $V{\approx}15.^{m}2$ and $16.^{m}2$ along the red giant branch(RGB) and their appearance shown by Lee & Cannon(1980) is found to be independent of measured region. The bimodal distribution of BHB stars is confirmed again and a wide gap shown by Lee & Cannon(1980) at $V{\approx}16^m$ is clearly seen for stars in the outer part (8' < r < 13') in the cluster. It is noted, however, that this gap is occupied by about a dozen of BHB staIs located in the inner region (5' < r < 8'). The number ratio of bright BHB star (V < $15^m$) to faint BHB stars (V > $15^m$) decreases with increasing radial distance from the cluster center. Three faintest BHB stars were found, and two stars ($V{\approx}18.^{m}5$) of there are located in the inner region of $r{\approx}6'$ and the other faintest one ($V{\approx}19.^{m}3$) located in the outer part of $r{\approx}13'$. Also a bluest star of (B - V) $\approx$ -0.5 at $V{\approx}17.^{m}2$ is found but it is located at the outer part of $r{\approx}13'$ in NE region. Therefore, the membership of the faintest BHB star and bluest star is suspected. The luminosity function(LF) and mass function(MF) for NGC 6752 were derived for MS stars. The LF for stars of $M_v\;<\;6^m$ in the outer part of r > 8' shows a consistency with that derived by Penny & Dickens(1986).
Carnegie Hubble Program II (hereafter CHP II) is a large Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observing campaign in the cycle 22 composed of a total of 184 orbits (132 primes + 52 parallels), which aims to measure H0 directly with an unprecedented accuracy. Unlike our previous efforts in CHP I which used Cepheids as a yardstick, CHP II takes the Population II (Pop II) distance indicators such as RR Lyraes and tip of the red giant branch stars (TRGBs) to set up a new calibration to Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) distance. The Pop II distance scales have two immediate advantages over the classical Cepheid method: 1) The period-luminosity relation of the RR Lyrae has a scatter that is a factor of 2 smaller; 2) The RR Lyrae/TRGB distance scale can be applied to both elliptical and spiral galaxies. This will provide a great systematic benefit by ultimately allowing us to double the number of SN Ia distances based on geometry. By taking advantage of this Pop II route, we expect to measure H0 value to 3 % of error which will be the highest accuracy H0 measurement to date using the "Distance Ladder" method. In this talk I will present a brief background/overview on the CHP II, observations/data acquisition status, and ongoing research progress/preliminary results.
We have revisited the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS), a Hubble Space Telescope program to obtain ACS/WFC g and z bands imaging for a sample of 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. In this study, we examine 51 nucleated early-type galaxies in the ACSVCS in order to look into the relationship between the photometric and structural properties of stellar nuclei and their host galaxies. We morphologically dissect galaxies into five classes. We note that (1) the stellar nuclei of dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are generally fainter and bluer with g > 18.95 and (g-z) < 1.40 compared to some brighter and redder counterparts of the ellipticals (E) and lenticular galaxies (S0), (2) the g-band half-light radii of stellar nuclei of all dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are smaller than 20 pc and their average is about 4 pc, and (3) the colors of red stellar nuclei with (g - z) > 1.40 in bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies are bluer than their host galaxies colors. We also show that most of the unusually "red" stellar nuclei with (g-z) > 1.54 in the ACSVCS are the central parts of bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies. Furthermore, we present multi photometric band color - color plots that can be used to break the age-metallicity degeneracy particularly by inclusion of the thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phases of stellar evolution in the stellar population models.
We use BV CCD images to investigate the reality of the color gradient within a King type globular cluster NGC 7089. Surface photometry shows that there is a strong radial color gradient in the central region of the cluster in the sense of bluer center with the amplitude of ~0.39 $\pm$ 0.07 mag/$arcsec^2$ in (B - V). In the outer region of the cluster, however, the radial color gradient shows a reverse case, i.e., redder toward the center. (B - V) color profile which was derived from resolved stars in VGC 7089 field also shows a significant color gradient in the central region of the clusters, indicating that lights from the combination of red giant stars and blue horizontal branch stars cause the radial color gradient. Color gradient of the outer region of NGC 7089 may be due to the unresolved background of the cluster. Similar color gradients in the central area of clusters have been previously observed exserved exclusively in highly concentrated systems classified as post core collapse clusters. We caution, however, to confirm the reality of the color gradient from resolved stars, we need more accurate imaging data of the cluster with exceptional seeing condition because the effect of completeness correlates with local density of stars.
The $JHK_S$ magnitudes of the red giant branch tip (TRGB) and the distance moduli of the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613 have been determined from the near-infrared luminosity functions (LFs) of the resolved stars in the galaxy. Applying a Savitzky-Golay filtering, we derived the second derivatives of the LFs, and estimated the apparent magnitudes of the TRGB as $m_J\;=\;19.1$, $m_H\;=\;18.4$, and $m_{Ks}\;=\;18.0$. The mean values of the theoretical absolute magnitudes of the TRGB were measured by using the Yonsei-Yale isochrones with a metallicity range of -2.1 < [Fe/H] < -0.5 and age of 12 Gyr. The derived values of near-infrared TRGB distance moduli for IC 1613 are (m - M) = $24.12{\pm}0.25$, $24.20{\pm}0.44$, and $24.00{\pm}0.52$ for J, H, and $K_S$ bands, respectively.
