The experiment was conducted to determine pollen morphology of Chinese peony and its germination. The results were obtained as following ; Pollen shpae was usually large ellipse and the pollen germination rate of Eui-seong Peony line was 71% which was lower than that of other Peony lines. In a bud, the pollen began to be observed on $7{\sim}9days$ before flowering and as getting on for flowering time, normal pollen and germination rates were higher. The pollen germination and elongation beganat 30 minutes after incubation on artificial medium and were completed after $2{\sim}3\;hours$. As the storage time went on, the pollen life span was shortened. The germination rate was 51% at 8 days-storage of room temperature. The germination rate was 48% ad 43% at 95 day-storage in $0^{\circ}C$ and $-15^{\circ}C$, respectively.

Research was initiated to investigate germination characteristics and germination pattern of 14 herbaceous plant entries used on the road slope during 30 days. An alternative germination condition for 14 herbaceous plant entries required by International Seed Testing Association(ISTA) was applied in the experiment, consisting of 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$. Significant differences were observed in the first germination rate(0.3%~40.7%)and in the final germination rate(7.7%~93.3%). Days to the first germination(2~8days), days to the 30% germination(2~6days) and days to the peak germination(6~18days) were different among 14 herbaceous plant entries in the study. From this result, we could find out higher final germination rate of 14 herbaceous plant entries in the following order; First, forage crops and cool-season turfgrasses; Second, herbeceous flowers; Third, wild plants. We could also divide germination rate among 14 herbaceous plant entries as 6 groups(I;very high, II;high, III;medium high, IV;medium low, V;low, VI;very low) based on the final germination rate and divide germination speed as 5 groups(A;very fast, B;fast, C;normal, D;slow, E;very slow)based on days to the peak germination. Considering germination characteristics and pattern of 14 herbaceous plant entries Medicago sativa, Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea and Cosmos sulphureus were regard as dominating species while Lespedeza cuneata, Silene armeria, Lotus corniculatus var.japonicus, Coreopsis tinctoria and Centaurea cyanus as competitive species following dominating species. However, Chrysanthemum burbankii, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Chrysanthemum boreale., Artemisia princeps var. orientalis and Arundinella hirta were not almost expected to emerge.
This study was conducted to know the effect of storage period, harvesting time and light condition on dormancy breaking of major weeds. Echinochloa crus-galli, Cyperus serotinus, Aeschynomene indica, Ludwigia prostrata and Bidens tripartita had the 10 or 30% germination ability within 30 days after harvest but scirpus juncoides, Potamogeton distinctus, Aneilema japonica and Monochoria vaginalis had not germination untill 120 days after harvest of seed. C. serotinus and P. hydropiper required strong light for germination but S. juncoides, L. prostrata and B. tripartita showed the less tham 5% germination in the dark condition gerntinator. S. juncoides germination showed negative response in chemical soaking but A. japonica, B. tripartita and L. prostrata showed high germination percentage in Acetone, Chloroform and distilled water soaking during the 10 days after treatment.

To investigate the possibility of developing the seeding measure for river bank slope revegetation, germination experiment and early growth observation were conducted using 3 native species growing naturally around river banks such as Pennisetum alopecuroides, Phragmites communis, and Miscanthus sinensis. The applied seeding methods were 3 such as scattering seeds, tillage after scattering seeds, and covering up seed with soil after scattering seeds. According to seeding methods, germination experiment and early growth observation were carried out on nursery bed soil in greenhouse. As results of this study, all the 3 native plant species' germination ratio and growth in length on nursery bed soil were highest on the seeding method of covering up seed with soil. Also it was verified by Duncan's multiple range test that the germination ratio and growth in length on the seeding method of covering up seed with soil is distinguished from those on other two seeding methods. According to this results, the best possible seeding measure to be developed should be mechanical seed spraying with soil.
Lipoxygenase might be associated with seed deterioration by catalyzing the incorporation of molecular oxygen into fatty acids and generating free radicals. This study was performed to determine whether seed lipoxygenase activity would alter soybean seed longevity. In this study, germination percentage of lipoxygenase-lacking cultivar Jinpumkong2 (lx1lx1lx2lx2lx3lx3) was lower than that of Taekwangkong (Lx1Lx1Lx2Lx2Lx3Lx3). Segregation ratio for the three lipoxygenase isozymes of the F2-derived from the cross between Taekwangkong and Jinpumkong2 was fitted to 9 (Lx1Lx2Lx3) : 3 (Lx1Lx2lx3) : 3 (lxllx2Lx3) : 1 (lx1lx2lx3), suggesting the tight linkage between the Lx1 and Lx2 loci. Germination percentages varied widely but not differed among lipoxygenase isozyme types of F$_3$ seeds before and after accelerated aging. Seed coat of Jinpumkong2 was damaged severely following accelerated aging, whereas that of Taekwangkong was not. Thus, seed of lipoxygenase-lacking soybean cultivar, Jinpumkong2 showed greater deterioration compared with that of the normal Taekwangkong. However, the presence or absence of lipoxygenase activity had no effect on soybean germination.
There was no significant difference in the final germination percentages(Experiment 1-3) as affected by sunflower root exudates between the control and the treated for the test species. In general(Experiment 1), however, germination onset was delayed the treated bottles. Germination rate was, also, reduced for both radish(Raphanus sativus L.) and rice(Oryza sativa L.). Therefore, the germination index was low in the treated bottles but germination gradually increased with time in the greated bottles in all test species so that the final germination percentages were similar between treatments. The root exudates of sunflower had significant inhibitory effects(Experiment 1-3) on the lengths of the shoots and roots of all the test species. Fresh weight was also significantly reduced in all test species. Sunflower seedlings(Experiment 3) in the treated(with the XAD-4 resin column) were larger and healthier than those in the control (without XAD-4 resin column) because of the removal of allelochemicals. The fresh weight of sunflower seedlings was markedly inhibited by sunflower root exudates. These mean that sunflower probably is an autotoxic crop.

The effect of biological control agent Bacillus sp. (BAC03-3-1, BAC03-3-2, BAC02-4) on pre- and postemergence Sclerotinia rot of perilla (Perilla frutescens var. japonica) caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was determined from greenhouse field trials. The ability of this antagonist to reduce germination of sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum was also evaluated. In the greenhouse, suspension of BAC03-3-1 application as root drench of perilla, which provided as little as 10$\^$7/ cells/ $m\ell$ per gram of soil, significantly increased plant stand in pathogen-infested soil over that in the untreated control. All three isolates reduced the germination of sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum in loamy sand soils in the greenhouse. In loamy sand amended with rice bran the sclerotial germination was inversely correlated (r = -0.79) with perilla stand in the greenhouse. However, a higher rate of bacterial suspension with rice bran(Ig dwt./100g soil) than that applied with bacterial suspensions only was necessary to achieve a comparable reduction in sclerotial germination. In field study, all three isolates added to soil to provide 10$\^$7/ cells/$m\ell$ per gram significantly prevented Sclerotinia rot (73-85%) after 35 days of growth. The isolate BAC02-4, BAC03-3-1 and BAC03-3-2 gave final stands of 65 to 75, 60 to 70, and 55 to 60%, respectively. The addition of rice bran(1 %) to loamy sand in the field resulted in a 10-fold increase in propagule numbers of the three isolates within 10 days of application.

This experiments were conducted to investigate seed germination to evaluate the influence of anaerobic digestate on seed germination of perennial ryegrass seeds. The study conducted a germination experiment in petri-dishes, using perennial ryegrass seeds. The treatments were compared: non-treated control treated with distilled water, different concentration of anaerobic digestate. The germination percentage of perennial ryegrass seeds was highest in the fermented anaerobic digestate treatment. Root length of perennial ryegrass seeds was long by 4~5cm in the fermented anaerobic digestate with unfermented anaerobic digestate. In the relative root length ratio was by 30% higher in the in the fermented anaerobic digestate with unfermented anaerobic digestate. The germination index of perennial ryegrass seeds was high by 113% in the fermented anaerobic digestate compared to no treatment. The fermented anaerobic digestate have shown stimulatory effects in germination and development of root. Use of fermented anaerobic digestate can be recommended to farmers as a ecofriendly practice for better germination and growth.
Research was initiated to investigate early germination and establishment characteristics of perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.). An alternative condition was applied in Experiment I with 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$ (ISTA condition). Experiment II was conducted under $5^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ (natural condition). Significant differences were observed in germination percentage, germination speed and germination peak time. Seed germinating vigor was 66.00 to 93.75% under ISTA and 66.25 to 93.50% under natural conditions. Germination speed, measured as days to germination of 50% through 90%, was much faster with 'Pennant II', 'Brightstar II', 'Sonata' and 'Accent II' under ISTA conditions. But it was faster only with 'Pennant II' and 'Brightstar II' under natural conditions. Germination peak time ranged 1.48 to 5.65 days under ISTA, while 2.17 to 10.63 days under natural conditions. Regardless of growing conditions, the shortest cultivars in peak time were 'Sonata', 'Pennant II', and 'Brightstar II' and the longest one 'Revenge GLX'. Considering germinating vigor, early germination speed and germination peak time, 'Pennant II', 'Brightstar II', 'Sonata' and 'Accent II' were regarded as excellent cultivars under ISTA conditions, while 'Pennant II' and 'Brightstar II' under natural conditions.
This study was performed to define the physicochemical characteristics of food waste and food wastewater, and to find the effect of salinity variation experiment, the samples of 1, 2, 3 and 4 were prepared by the salinity of 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5%, respectively. In experiment, aerobic composting reactors were operated by the model which was composed of half an hour's stirring and 2 hour's aeration per day, for 45 days. Seeds of vegetables of Chinese cabbage and red pepper were seeded at compost-free control, compost 1, 2, 3 and compost 4 for the sake of investigation of germination rate and growth rate of those. The followings are the conclusions that were derived from this study. 1. In food waste, the moisture content was 60%, organic compound content was 95%, total carbon was 47.5%, total nitrogen was 1.6%(therefore, C/N ratio was 30). The values of pH were 4.0 and 3.8 the values of salinity were 0.9% and 1.2%, and the values of conductivity were 7.8 mS/cm and 18.0 mS/cm, respectively. 2. In salinity experiment, the reduction rate of volume was increased(40%) when the salinity was decreased(1.0%). Also, the reduction rate of mass was increased(52%) when the salinity was decreased(1.0%). This fact denotes that salinity hinders the process of composting. 3. Germination rate and growth rate of Chinese cabbage are more excellent than those of red pepper(97.14%, 5.2:2.5 cm). 4. In Chinese cabbage, germination rate and growth rate at compost with the lowest salinity are more excellent than those at compost-free control(97:94%, 5.2:4.5 cm).
