  • Shear wave velocity is commonly invoked in explaining geophysical phenomena and in solving geotechnical engineering problems. In particular, the importance of shear wave velocity in geotechnical earthquake engineering has been widely recognized for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation. In the present study, various insitu seismic tests were performed to evaluate geotechnical dynamic characteristics at 183 sites in Korea, and shear wave velocity profiles with depth were determined to be representative of the dynamic properties at the investigated sites. Subsurface soil and rock layers at the target sites were reclassified into five geotechnical layers: fill, alluvial soil, weathered soil, weathered rock, and bedrock, taking into account their general uses in geotechnical earthquake engineering practice. Average shear wave velocity profiles for the five geotechnical layers were obtained by synthesizing the shear wave velocity profiles from seismic tests in the field. Based on the profiles, a representative shear wave velocity value was determined for each layer, for use in engineering seismology and geotechnical earthquake engineering.

  • Myungji Housing Complex is located in the Nakdong River plain in which the Busan soft clays are developed. It has thick soft soil laver of about GL(-)50m including loose sandy layers, upper and lower clayey layers. The clayey layers have been being consolidated since the land reclamation was completed to build the place for Housing Complex(Apartment) in 1997. Therefore, as one of a series of advance preparations of this project, study was carried on the geotechnical characteristics under the foundation The first part of this paper represents a brief geological history. Then, geotechnical characteristics of clay was analyzed in the classical developments in soft clay. They were based on the geotechnical data obtained by site investigations performed from 1992 to 2005. Finally, we evaluated the average degree of consolidation at this point in time and the residual settlements of upper clayey layer using dissipation and oedometer tests for this project

  • Geotechnical variability is a complex feature that results from many independent sources of uncertainties, and is mainly affected by inherent variability and measurement errors. This study evaluates the coefficient of variation (COV) of soil properties at Song-do region in Korea for evaluating inherent soil variability. Since soil variability is sensitive to soil layers and soil types, the COVs by soil layers (reclaimed layer and marine layer) and the COVs by soil types (clay and silt) were separately evaluated. It is observed that geotechnical variability of marine layer and clay is relatively smaller than that of reclamation layer and silt.

  • The Rock mass in which constructed a tunnel consist of the geological formations or the engineering rock type. Each layers are distinguished by the mineral, weathering and distributions of faults and Joints. Therefore, a tunneling design in rock mass starts from understanding and analyzing of the various geological engineering factors and then the engineering characteristics and distributions for each layers are determined to analysis and collection of the efficient informations. For this working, next two problems have to be solved. First, the layers in rock mass have to be classified and their distributions have to be defined. Second, the rock mass classifications and distributions based on the standard engineering classification have to be determined. Efficiently to approaching this two problems, the best solution is all geotechnical data are embodied to 3-D.

  • For the reliable prediction of spatial geotechnical data, a procedure to build the Geotechnical Information System (GTIS) based on geo-knowledge within the frame of GIS technology was developed by introducing a couple of new concepts of the extended area containing the study area and the additional site visit for acquiring surface geological data. To build the GTIS for Gyeongju as the case study of regional model application, intensive site investigations and pre-existing geotechnical data collections were performed and additional site visit was also carried out for acquiring surface geo-layer data in accordance with the developed procedure. Within the GTIS based on geo-knowledge for Gyeongiu area, the spatially distributed geo-layers across the extended area were predicted using the geostatistical kriging method and those for the study area were extracted. Furthermore, the spatial distribution maps for the thickess of geo-layers and the depth to bedrock were constructed for the practical use in geotechnical field. It was evaluated that the GTIS based on geo-knowledge developed in this study is superior to the conventional geotechnical GIS in terms of both the standard deviation and the geological expert judgment.

It is observed that geotechnical variability of marine layer and clay is relatively smaller than that of reclamation layer and silt. And, the highly weathered rock and soil show the higher cays in the interpretation of the strength parameters of the fresh and weathered rock. And the proposed COV of Songdo area can be used for the reliability-based design procedure.

  • Bearing capacity of soil can be improved by several conventional ground improvement techniques like stabilization and compaction. In recent time, the use of reinforced soil has become popular due to the availability of durable strong geosynthetic materials. In this papers, through the laboratory model tests on sandy ground reinforced by mats about the strip footing under plane strain condition, the effects of bearing capacity improvement and behaviour of sandy ground were observed. And bearing capacities calculated by proposed method and measured by tests were compared.

  • Laboratory model test results for the ultimate bearing capacity of a surface strip foundation supported by a near-saturated clayey soil reinforced with layers of geogrid have been presented. The optimum values for the width of the reinforcement layers, the depth of reinforcement, and the location of the first layer of geogrid for mobilization of maximum bearing capacity have been determined. Based on the model test results, an empirical procedure to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity has been developed.

  • Cone penetration was analyzed by arbitrary Lagangian-Eulerian(ALE) method. In order to simulate full penetration, steady state analyses were performed using ABAQUS/Explicit, which models upward flow of soil layers. In the analysis of homogeneous layer it was found that the paths and the strain of soil particles were consistent with the result of the strain path method and that the ultimate resistance were reasonably evaluated. The cone penetration through different soil layers was also analyzed and that showed the transfer of cone resistance. The steady state ALE analysis could perform full penetration through the layered soils.

  • This study presented the reinforcing effect of sands by using newly devised 3D Tirecell. Plate loading tests for sand were conducted for different relative density and number of reinforced layers. From the tests, the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced sand increased with increasing relative densities. The effect of reinforced layers with 0.4B interval is limited to 2 layers and further reinforcing effects can not be obtained beyond 3 layers. Especially the bearing capacity increased remarkably at 1 layer of Tirecell reinforcement and the degree of increase was small for 1 layer to 2 layers increase of reinforcement. Test results show that the reinforcing effect of Tirecell is prominent compared with commercial geocell in the literature.
