  • Recently, the duct system with a cross flow fan was used to improve the ventilation in various industrial fields. For the efficient ventilation, it is necessary to design the duct system based on the flow characteristics around the cross flow fan. In the present study, the flow characteristics around a cross flow fan in the ventilation duct were predicted by using the moving mesh and sliding interface techniques for the rotation of blades. To design the duct system with the high performance of ventilation, the CFD simulations were repeated with the revised duct model based on the DOE. With the numerical results of flow rate through the ventilation duct with various geometric parameters, the optimized geometry of ventilation duct to maximize the flow rate was obtained by using the Kriging approximation method. From the performance curves of cross flow fan in the original and optimized models of ventilation duct, it was observed that the flow rate through the optimized model is about 16 percent larger than that through the original model.

  • Offset-fed dish antennas are considered. Offset-fed dish antennas are widely used for DBS reception, the problem of offset-fed dish antenna has, however, received little attention because of its complicated and asymmetric geometry. A Fourier-transform technique and Physical Optics are employed to express the fields radiated from offset-fed reflector and feed horn aperture. The simultaneous equations are solved to obtain a solution in a fast convergent series, thus facilitating the numerical computation. For given parameters such as diameter of reflector, focal length, offset height of reflector center, exact solutions are derived. Since offset-fed dish antenna has an application as multi-beam antenna using multiple feed, a brief feasablity of dual beam antenna for Korea-SAT (116$^{\circ}$E, EIRP 59 dBW) and Orion-SAT (139$^{\circ}$E, EIRP 54 dBW) is given in Conclusion.

  • A shape optimal design of synthetic intervertebral disc prosthesis is performed using a three-dimensional finite element method. Geometric parameters are introduced to model the cross-sectional geometry of the intervertebral disc. It is assumed that the total strain energy in the intact intervertebral disc is minimized under the normal load conditions, as often cited in other references. To calculate the stain energy density, both the nonlinear material properties and the large deformations are taken into account. The design variables of the annulus fiber angle and the area ratio of the nucleus pulposus are calculated as 31°and 30%, respectively, which complies well with the intact disc. Thus, the same optimization procedure is applied to the design of the synthetic intervertebral disc prosthesis whose material properties are different from the intact disc. For the given synthetic material properties, the values of 67°and 24% for the fiber angle and the area ratio are obtained.

  • Microlenses and microlens arrays are fabricated using a novel fabrication technology based on the exposure of a resist (usually PMMA) to deep X-rays and subsequent thermal treatment. The fabrication technology is very simple and produces microlenses and microlens arrays with good surface roughness (less than 1 nm). The molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PMMA is reduced when it is irradiated with deep X-rays. The microlenses is produced through the effects of volume change, surface tension, and reflow during thermal treatment of irradiated PMMA. The geometry of the microlens is determined by parameters such as the X-ray dose applied to the PMMA, the diameter of the microlens, along with the heating temperature, heating time, and cooling rate in the thermal treatment. Microlenses are produced with diameters ranging from 30 to 1500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The modified LIGA process is used not only to construct hemispherical microlenses but also structures that are rectangular-shaped, star-shaped, etc.

  • The torque converter, a major part of automatic transmissions, has many difficulties in analysis due to the factors such as power transmission through fluid flow, complex internal geometry, and various operating conditions. Because of such difficulties, the dynamic analysis and design of a torque converter are generally carried out by using equivalent performance model which is based on the concept of mean flow path. Since the design procedures of a torque converter are essential technology of automotive industry, the details of the procedures are rarely published. In this study, the basic design procedures of a torque converter are systemized and coded based on the equivalent performance model. The mathematical methods to deal with mean flow path determination and the core-shape are developed. And by using this model, the method of determination of performance parameters satisfying the requested performance is proposed. Finally, to embody the three-dimensional shape, the intermediate blade angles which maximize the tractive performance are determined and laid out.

  • When structures are loaded by a combination of primary and secondary stresses, plasticity effects occur which cannot be evaluated by a simple linear addition of the effects resulting from the two independent stress systems. Thermal stress due to temperature gradient is classified as secondary stress. It is known that secondary stress is released as increase of plastic zone. In this paper, two and three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses are performed for the cracked plates and pipes under combined thermal and mechanical loading. And V-factor is introduced to account for plasticity effect. The present results provide that V-factor is function of thermal factor and loading and is consistent regardless of geometry. We developed the prediction method of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameter under combined primary and secondary loading from the present results.

  • At present time, LNG demand of the world is increasing and the piping line for NG transportation has been already installed in Korea. The air fm vaporizer is, however, required because of the transportation for remotely local areas. This paper numerically investigates on the heat transfer characteristics of relevant geometric variations of air-fin vaporizer which is heated by air not by sea water. This vaporizer must be designed in consideration of both efficiency and economics because air is relatively a little heat source. In this study, the pipe and the longitudinal fins are fundamental geometric considerations. Main parameters of geometry are the number, the thickness, and the length of the fins. Finally, the results of heat transfer effects are investigated with the characteristics of each parameter variation.

  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the radiation properties for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. In this study, a repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm which is a relatively recent heuristic search method is proposed as an effective method for improving the search efficiency for unknown parameters. To verify the performance of the proposed RPSO algorithm, it is compared with a basic particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGA) for the inverse radiation problem with estimating the various radiation properties in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. A finite-volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation of a direct problem to obtain measured temperatures.

  • In order to produce high-quality optical components, aspheric lenses have been widely applied in recent years. An aspheric lens consists of aspheric surfaces instead of spherical ones, which causes difficulty in the design process as well as the manufacturing procedure. Although injection molding is widely used to fabricate optical lenses owing to its high productivity, there remains lots of difficulty to determine appropriate mold design factors and injection molding parameters. In the injection molding fields, computer simulation has been effectively applied to analyze processes based on the shell analysis so far. Considering the geometry of optical lenses, a full-3d simulation based on solid elements has been reported as a reliable approach. The present work covers three-dimensional injection molding simulation and relevant deformation analysis of an injection molded plastic lens based on 3d solid elements. Numerical analyses have been applied to the injection molding processes of three aspheric lenses for an image sensing module of a mobile phone. The reliability of the proposed approach has been verified in comparison with the experimental results.

  • Damping characteristics of a Helmholtz resonator to passively control the combustion instability were investigated by linear acoustic analysis and atmospheric acoustic tests. Its orifice length and diameter were selected as the design parameters and supplied SPL(sound pressure level) effect on damping characteristics were investigated. Damping capacity is improved by decreasing the orifice length as well as by increasing the orifice diameter. Also, the results showed that the damping capacity of the resonator decreased nonlinearly about above 110 dB and instabilities in the nonlinear region were more effectively suppressed by increasing the orifice diameter.
