For stability design and P-${\Delta}$ analysis of steel frames with semi-rigid connections, the explicit form of the exact tangential stiffness matrix of a generalized semi-rigid frame element having rotational and translational connections is firstly derived using the stability functions. And its elastic and geometric stiffness matrix is consistently obtained by Taylor series expansion. Next depending on connection types of semi-rigidity, the corresponding tangential stiffness matrices are degenerated based on penalty method and static condensation technique. And then numerical procedures for determination of effective buckling lengths of generalized semi-rigid frames members and P-${\Delta}$ and shortly addressed. Finally three numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. Particularly the minimum braced frames and coupled buckling modes of the corresponding frames are investigated.

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges with design variables and compare the validity and applicability of computational methods for evaluating ultimate load capacity of cable-stayed bridges. The methods considered in this paper are elastic buckling analysis, inelastic buckling analysis and nonlinear elasto-plastic analysis. Elastic buckling analysis uses a numerical eigenvalue calculation without considering geometric nonlinearities of cable-stayed bridges and the inelastic material behavior of main components. Inelastic buckling analysis uses an iterative eigenvalue calculation to consider inelastic material behavior, but cannot consider geometric nonlinearities of cable-stayed bridges. The tangent modulus concept with the column strength curve prescribed in AASHTO LRFD is used to consider inelastic buckling behavior. Detailed procedures of inelastic buckling analysis are presented and corresponding computer codes were developed. In contrast, nonlinear elasto-plastic analysis uses an incremental-iterative method and can consider both geometric nonlinearities and inelastic material behavior of a cable-stayed bridge. Proprietary software ABAQUS are used and user-subroutines are newly written to update equivalent modulus of cables to consider geometric nonlinearity due to cable sags at each increment step. Ultimate load capacities with the three analyses are evaluated for numerical models of cable-stayed bridges that have center spans of 600 m, 900 m and 1200 m with different girder depths and live load cases. The results show that inelastic buckling analysis is an effective approximation method, as a simple and fast alternative, to obtain ultimate load capacity of long span cable-stayed bridges, whereas elastic buckling analysis greatly overestimates the overall stability of cable-stayed bridges.
Flutter stability is one of major concerns on the design of long-span cable-stayed bridges. Considering the geometric nonlinearity of cable-stayed bridges and the effects due to the nonlinear wind-structure interactions, a nonlinear method is proposed to analyze the flutter stability of cable-stayed bridges, and a computer program NFAB is also developed. Taking the Jingsha bridge over the Yangtze River as example, parametric analyses on flutter stability of the bridge are carried out, and some important design parameters that affect the flutter stability of cable-stayed bridges are pointed out.

The purpose of this study is to propose the nonlinear analysis method which combines the nonlinear incremental method with the layered method to solve the problems due to the geometric and the material nonlinearities. As numerical analysis models, the reinforced concrete simple beam and the steel arch frame are used to verify the algorithm of the proposed nonlinear method. The results are gotten from the computation procedures. According to the results of this study, the fracture pattern of the beam according to the ratio of tensile steel and the strength of the concrete and the steel can be estimated by the proposed method. Therefore, the load-deflection curve of structure can be, exactly, depicted by the proposed method. Also, the rupture load, the site and the depth of crack of the beam can analytically be checked by the proposed method. In this respect, the proposed method contributes for the solving the stability problem of the actual structure.
Intensive rainfall during the summer season in Korea has triggered numerous devastating landslides outside of downtown in mountainous areas. The 2D slope stability analysis that is generally used for cut slopes and embankments is inadequate to model slope failure in mountainous areas. This paper presents a new 3D slope stability formulation using the global sliding vector in the limit equilibrium method, and it uses an ellipsoidal slip surface for static and quasi-static analyses. The slip surface's flexibility of the ellipsoid shape gives a lower FS than the spherical failure shape in the Fellenius, Bishop, and Janbu's simplified methods. The increasing sub-columns of each column tend to increase the FS and converge to a steady value. The symmetrical geometric conditions of the convex turning corners do not indicate symmetrical failure of the surface in 3D analysis. Pseudo-static analysis shows that the horizontal seismic force decreases the FS and increases the mass volume at the critical failure state. The stability index takes the FS and corresponding sliding mass into consideration to assess the potential risk of slope failure in complex mountainous terrain. It is a valuable parameter for selecting a vulnerable area and evaluating the overall risk of slope failure.

The concrete work of bridge decks is performed in a high place, which may reduce safety and productivity. In addition, the conventional method for deck forms require a great deal of manpower, and a form (sheathing) board is damaged when removed after curing. As a result, the concrete deck work of bridge construction becomes the cause of delayed construction and increased cost. To solve these problems, SMART form, a system form, is developed. SMART form is a temporary device for easier installation and removal, by mounting it to the lower flange of a bridge girder and using a mechanical behavior of the form system for deck concrete pouring. For stable installation and removal of the developed SMART form, geometric behaviors should be analyzed to prove its validity. Furthermore, the validity of geometric behaviors when the SMART form size is altered in response to the various arrangement of bridge girders should be proved. Thus, the study is intended to analyze the geometric validity of the form system for bridge deck concrete pouring. The structural stability of the form system for bridge deck concrete pouring can be secured, which will be applied in the field.
The main purpose of this study was to develop a useful method for analysing slope stability by seepage force. The stability of an embankment impounding a water reservoir is highly depend upon the location of seepage line with the embankment, it is important to illustrate the seepage phenomenon. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid rise change of reservoir level. Seepage forces in embankments are easily determined if frictional forces are expressed in relation to hydraulic gradient i. Seepage forces can combine with soil weights to improve stability or worsen it, depending on the direction in which the forces act ;n relation to the geometric cross section.
Numerical analysis is important for the design, construction and maintenance of large caverns. The rock mass contains generally discontinuities such as faults, joints and fissures. The mechanical behavior and geometric characteristics of these discontinuities would have a significant impact on the stability of the caverns. In this research the Distinct Element Method(DEM) was used to analyze the structural stability of the large cavern. The Barton-Bandis Joint Model (B-B J.M) was used as a constitutive model for the joint. In addition, two different cases 1) analysis with a support system and 2) analysis with no support system, were analyzed to optimize a support system and to investigate reinforcing effects of a support system. The most significant parameters of in-situ stress, JRC of in-situ natural joints, and spatial distribution characteristics of discontinuities were acquired through field investigation. Displacement (horizontal, joint shear), maximum joint opening, maximum and minimum principal stresses, range of relaxed zone, rockbolt axial forces and shotcrete stresses were calculated at each excavation stage. As a result of analysis the calculated values proved to be under the allowable value Rockbolts also proved to be an efficient support measure to control joint shear displacement which had significant effects on extending the relaxed zone. As a consequence, the structural stability of the cavern was assured with an appropriate support system.
In this study, a flexibility-based finite element method considering geometric and material nonlinearities is developed for analyzing steel-concrete frame structures. The stability functions obtained from the exact buckling solution of the beam-column subjected to end moments are used to accurately capture the second-order effects. The proposed method uses the force interpolation functions, including a moment magnification due to the axial force and lateral displacement. Thus, only one element per a physical member can account for the interaction between the bending moment and the axial force in a rational way. The proposed method applies the Newton method based on the load control and uses the secant stiffness method, which is computationally both efficient and stable. According to the evaluation result of this study, the proposed method consistently well predicts the nonlinear inelastic behavior of steel-concrete composite frames and gives good efficiency.
The super convergent laminated composite beam element is newly derived for the lateral stability analysis. For this, a theoretical model of the laminated composite beams is developed based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory. The present laminated beam takes into account the transverse shear and the restrained warping induced shear deformation. The second-order coupling torque resulting from the geometric nonlinearity is rigorously derived. From the principle of minimum total potential energy, the stability equations and force-displacement relationships are derived and the explicit expressions for the displacement parameters are presented by applying the power series expansions of displacement components to simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Finally, the member stiffness matrix is determined using the force-displacement relationships. In order to show accuracy and superiority of the beam element developed by this study, the critical lateral buckling moments for bisymmetric and monosymmetric I-beams are presented and compared with other results available in the literature, the isoparametric beam elements, and shell elements from ABAQUS.
