  • If the new town development project begins with inappropriate location then it will be difficult to recruit tenants and the proportion of the infrastructure cost could increase. It is necessary to evaluate the feasibility of the new town development projects to solve this problem. This study aims to identify the current status of the new town development projects and draw up evaluation criteria by examining advanced researches. To identify the importance of each village, we set up the weights through analytic hierarchy process. The evaluation criteria were classified into location conditions and economical efficiency. In the case of location conditions, it was classified into available size, geographical conditions, and accessibility. As a result of analyzing the questionnaire, it was subdivided into officially assessed land prices in case of economic efficiency. This study had some limitations, that is we focused on the location conditions and economic feasibility among other factors. Therefore further study should contain analysis more on socio-cultural aspects such as residents' cooperation or will for this project. By adding results later, we can make more reasonable decisions when we choose appropriate area.

  • The location of villages differs by position, and the method to form the conditions of location varies greatly. This study has comprehensively investigated village layout in the riverside and directional relations in houses. With changes in riverside landscape and transition to an agriculture-oriented village, there have been changes in road and the size, shape and direction of houses as well. In terms of the direction of houses situated along the river, a house facing the river accounts for more than half of all houses in the village. As traditional houses are transformed into modern houses over time, houses have become bigger, and the number of the houses facing south or southeast has been on the rise. As described above, riverside landscape and preference for the house facing south have an effect on determination of the facing direction of houses. However, the direction of geographical features of the village was first followed, and other conditions have been reflected, and the characteristics for the facing direction of houses have been observed.

  • Landfill has been a long pending issue in the Seoul Metropolitan Region since it was created. Adopting Painter's notion of "territory-effect," this paper analyzes the network formation and change of diverse actors and territory as an effect of networked relations according to four periods from the creation of the landfill to current extension of landfill use. The results are as followed. First, the network formation and composition of major actors has been changed together with historical-geographical conditions. Second, these networks created territory as an effect and re-articulated the configuration of conflicts and solidarity of diverse actors. Third, territory created as an network-effect are different in each period, and is continuously reterritorializing. These findings suggest that territory is never complete and always in the making.

  • Place names represent a lot of information about the region and the life of the local residents. In particular, old geographical names have more spatial informations than recent place names. This paper tried to analyze the distribution and characteristic of 'Dumo' which is one of the ancient place names and was studied by Nam youngwoo in 1996 for the first time. After considering the etymology and phonological structure of 'Dumo', the name 'Dumo' included the geographic conditions related to a mountain and river in itself. The total number of place names in the line of 'Dumo' which were collected by the author were 417 and they were distributed evenly on the Korean Peninsula. 85% of them were used for the human place names and 73% of the human place names were served as settlement names standing for a village or an administrative district. Thus the author analyzed the location and diffusion of 220 of settlement names in depth. As a result, villages named in the line of 'Dumo' preferred southern or eastern exposure and located in front of a mountain and around a river. After a village name 'Dumo' was set up, it produces other similar names in the line of 'Dumo' near the village so most place names of 'Dumo' were found with several names of 'Dumo' not alone.

  • The paper industry has experienced locational shifts in the continuous innovations in raw materials and process technology. Due to the different conditions of production according to various nations and regions, the structure and location of the paper industry has evolved. Therefore, case studies of individual nations and regions are significant in understanding the various developments in the paper industry. The present study focuses on the locational shift in the development process of the paper industry in Korea, and explains the conditions in the factors of production, market and government policies. Firstly, the study examines the changes in the structure of the Korean pulp and paper industry from the early twentieth century until today, the conditions for factors of production, the change in the raw materials, the Korean paper industry staring as a pulp manufacturing process-focused then into a paper manufacturing process-focused. Secondly, the study determines how the current paper industry considers raw materials and market in the location selection process. Finally, the study explains how the locational shifts in the paper industry progressed with the implementation of location regulations in the metropolitan area since the late 1970s.

  • Iksan Export Free Zone which was established for the export promotion, the employment augmentation, the technological improvement and the regional development promotion through the attraction of foreign direct investment is declining function with diminution of foreign direct investment, exportation and employment since the middle of the 1980s. The decline factor of the function was inherent in disregard of the necessary locational factors for Export Free zone's function promotion and without respect to conditions in a choice of location. And the present labor intensive industrial structure of region has some difficulties with a modification of Export Free Zone's industrial structure to a technology intensive industry. According to the lack of coherent policy, a limited plottage and a lack of the extensible space decrease the effect of agglomeration and economic of scale. And the lack of governmental policy to create a dynamic advantage comparative with an amelioration of the locational conditions of region diminish the regional attractive force to foreign direct investment.

  • In wireless sensor networks(WSNs), geographical routing algorithms can enhance the network capacity. However, in real WSNs, it is difficult for each node to know its physical location accurately. Especially, indoor environments contain various obstacles such as concrete wall, furniture which cause non-line-of-sight(NLOS) conditions. To solve the problem, we propose location error compensation algorithm by using two difference topology constructions. First topology is based on mobile node's location which is obtained from anchor nodes. Second topology is based on mutual distance from neighbor nodes. The proposed algorithm efficiently detects and corrects the location errors and significantly enhances the network performance of geographic routing in the presence of location errors.

  • In many security monitoring contexts, the performance or efficiency of surveillance sensors/networks based on a single sensor type may be limited by environmental conditions, like illumination change. It is well known that different modes of sensors can be complementary, compensating for failures or limitations of individual sensor types. From a location analysis and modeling perspective, a challenge is how to locate different modes of sensors to support security monitoring. A coverage-based optimization model is proposed as a way to simultaneously site k different sensor types. This model considers common coverage among different sensor types as well as overlapping coverage for individual sensor types. The developed model is used to site sensors in an urban area. Computational results show that common and overlapping coverage can be modeled simultaneously, and a rich set of solutions exists reflecting the tradeoff between common and overlapping coverage.

  • The disposition of public parks pursue proper distribution and hierarchy formations on the basis of the neighborhood units theory. However, problems like price of land has brought about a large gap between theories and real conditions. This paper examines the problems of the practical disposition and disposition standards of public parks to solve these contradictions with reference to examples in Japan metro-cities. Study results are as follows; 1) The existing disposition theories are based on the district-boundary of men’s acting and settling down. Therefore, the disposition standards of large-scale parks or special parks beyond the humane scale have not been explained exactly. 2) As city sizes have expanded, these large-scale parks have developed greatly, however, they are located out of urban areas on the ground of nature’s geographical features. As a result, many small parks developed in urban areas. This extreme phenomenon of location would break up proper distribution and hierarchy. 3) Large parks over 4 ha not only take an important role in forming greenbelts but their location is also mainly based on their natural geographical features so that they are absorbed into the network -structure of greenbelts. 4) It is suggested that in planning parks, location and size of large parks over 4 ha should be selected and decided in the relation not with parks but with greenbelts. Parks of 4 ha or below are properly disposed. Also, these parks take a great role in forming the district boundary for settling down. Accordingly, proper distribution and hierarchy formation needs to be based on established neighborhood as they were previously.
