이방인 뉴요커의 본질적 의미에 대한 현상학적 연구 -패션디자이너와 광고디자이너를 중심으로- (Phenomenological Study on the Essential Meaning of Gentile New Yorkers -Focusing on Fashion Designers and Advertising Designers-)

  • This phenomenological study is to understand the meaning and essence of experience from the perspective of a New Yorker. Participants were 11 Korean single women around 30 years old who work as fashion designers or advertising designers living and working in New York. Data were collected from November, 2013 to February, 2014, and one-to-one in-depth interviews were performed for data collection. Data analysis used the descriptive phenomenological method proposed by Giorgi. Phenomenological research is useful to understand the meaning of the experience for select cases and is used as an epoch and free variation method. The study results were identified from 70 common meanings to 14 exposed themes and 4 essentially themes from a gentile New Yorker's experience. The 4 essential themes were as follows. 1) Self-realization at the highest stage, 2) Indulge in the advanced culture of affluence and freedom, 3) Collapsing every day in depressed foreign workers, and 4) Becoming a rootless gentile New Yorker.

Modal and structural identification of a R.C. arch bridge

  • The paper summarizes the dynamic-based assessment of a reinforced concrete arch bridge, dating back to the 50's. The outlined approach is based on ambient vibration testing, output-only modal identification and updating of the uncertain structural parameters of a finite element model. The Peak Picking and the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition techniques were used to extract the modal parameters from ambient vibration data and a very good agreement in both identified frequencies and mode shapes has been found between the two techniques. In the theoretical study, vibration modes were determined using a 3D Finite Element model of the bridge and the information obtained from the field tests combined with a classic system identification technique provided a linear elastic updated model, accurately fitting the modal parameters of the bridge in its present condition. Hence, the use of output-only modal identification techniques and updating procedures provided a model that could be used to evaluate the overall safety of the tested bridge under the service loads.

Structural novelty detection based on sparse autoencoders and control charts

  • The powerful data mapping capability of computational deep learning methods has been recently explored in academic works to develop strategies for structural health monitoring through appropriate characterization of dynamic responses. In many cases, these studies concern laboratory prototypes and finite element models to validate the proposed methodologies. Therefore, the present work aims to investigate the capability of a deep learning algorithm called Sparse Autoencoder (SAE) specifically focused on detecting structural alterations in real-case studies. The idea is to characterize the dynamic responses via SAE models and, subsequently, to detect the onset of abnormal behavior through the Shewhart T control chart, calculated with SAE extracted features. The anomaly detection approach is exemplified using data from the Z24 bridge, a classical benchmark, and data from the continuous monitoring of the San Vittore bell-tower, Italy. In both cases, the influence of temperature is also evaluated. The proposed approach achieved good performance, detecting structural changes even under temperature variations.

Vibration-based structural health monitoring of stay cables by microwave remote sensing

  • Microwave remote sensing is probably the most recent experimental technique suitable to the non-contact measurement of deflections on large structures, in static or dynamic conditions. In the first part of the paper, the main techniques adopted in microwave remote sensing are described, so that advantages and potential issues of these techniques are presented and discussed. Subsequently, the paper addresses the application of the radar technology to the measurement of the vibration response on the stay cables of two cable-stayed bridges. The dynamic tests were performed in operational conditions (i.e. with the excitation being mainly provided by micro-tremors, wind and traffic) and the maximum deflections of the cables were generally lower than 5.0 mm. The investigation clearly highlights: (a) the safe and simple use of the radar on site and its effectiveness to simultaneously measure the dynamic response of all the stay cables of an array; (b) the negligible effects of the typical issues and uncertainties that might affect the radar measurements; (c) the accuracy of the results provided by the microwave remote sensing in terms of natural frequencies and tension forces of the stay cables; (d) the suitability of microwave interferometry to the repeated application within Structural Health Monitoring programmes.

Simplified analytical Moment-Curvature relationship for hollow circular RC cross-sections

  • The seismic vulnerability analysis of multi-span bridges can be based on the response of the piers, provided that deck, bearings and foundations remain elastic. The lateral response of an RC bridge pier can be affected by different mechanisms (i.e., flexure, shear, lap-splice or buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement bars, second order effects). In the literature, simplified formulations are available for mechanisms different from the flexure. On the other hand, the flexural response is usually calculated with a numerically-based Moment-Curvature diagram of the base section and equivalent plastic hinge length. The goal of this paper is to propose a simplified analytical solution to obtain the Moment-Curvature relationship for hollow circular RC sections. This based on calibrated polynomials, fitted against a database comprising 720 numerical Moment-Curvature analyses. The section capacity curve is defined through the position of 6 characteristic points and they are based on four input parameters: void ratio of the hollow section, axial force ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, transversal reinforcement ratio. A case study RC bridge pier is assessed with the proposed solution and the results are compared to a refined numerical FEM analysis, showing good match.

소아백혈병 환자의 전신방사선조사 시 조직보상체의 재질변화에 따른 선량평가 (In Pediatric Leukemia, Dose Evaluation according to the Type of Compensators in Total Body Irradiation)

  • 소아백혈병의 치료방법 인 조혈모세포이식법의 전처치 방법으로서 항암제와 함께 대표적으로 사용되고 있는 전신방사선조사에 대하여 치료를 시행하기 전 정량적인 인체장기에 대한 선량을 평가하고자 하였다. 모의실험 프로그램 MCNPX를 사용하여 가상의 공간에서 소아용 모의피폭체를 대상으로 조직보상체의 재질을 변화시켜 실험을 진행하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 평균피부선량은 조직보상체의 재질에 따라 Plexiglass는 74.60 mGy/min, Al은 73.96 mGy/min, Cu는 72.26 mGy/min, Pb의 경우 67.90 mGy/min을 보였다. 둘째, 심부선량은 조직보상체 재질에 상관없이 갑상선, 생식선, 소화기계, 머리, 폐, 신장의 순으로 높게 나타났다. 끝으로 조직보상체와 환자와의 거리는 50 cm 이격시켰을 때가 이상적인 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구결과를 토대로 할 때, 조직보상체 Al, Cu, Pb은 현재 사용되고 있는 Plexiglass 재질을 대체할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

뉴욕 거주 한국인 디자이너의 일상생활에 관한 질적 사례 연구 (Qualitative Case Study on the Everyday Life of Korean Designers in New York)

  • This study explores the daily life of Korean designers in New York. We use in-depth interviews within the daily lives of participants to first reveal the time structure and meaning of everyday life. In this everyday time frame, this study reveals the content and meaning of life in New York, which is especially useful for fashion majors. Participants were 11 single Korean women around 30 years old working as designers in New York. Data was collected from Manhattan, New York, from November 2013 to February 2014 through the use of in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data collected daily life information on time usage, money, and energy that is first summarized into 229 meaning units. In the following, 55 central meanings were derived from stories common to behaviors for study participants and 19 subcategories were compressed into academic language. Finally, the generalized categories are divided into six categories of study life, work life, future life, family life, leisure life and fashion life. As a result of the first study, the daily time structure consisted of customary public time and personal repeat time. Second, the customary public time categories included the studying for 'Beginning to jump again to the best', 'Now working as a designer in New York', and future life expecting 'Future growing as a career woman'. Repeated personal time categories include family life: 'A single life of a lonely and poor gentile', leisure life: 'Healing life that is supported by abundant advanced culture', and fashion life: 'New York fashion life coexist with harmony'. Third, work was the center of everyday life for study participants versus fashion and leisure that were central to everyday life when not working.

  • '타자'는 주체의 권리 개념이 등장한 근대 서구 사상 이후 철학적으로 주요한 개념이다. 타자에 대한 여러 정의와 논의가 있었다. 본고에서는 '타자'를 정의 짓기보다는 '타자와의 관계 맺기'를 중심으로 바라보고자 한다. 특히 에마뉘엘 레비나스의 논의를 중심으로 '타자성과 윤리'에 주목하고자 한다. 레비나스는 타자에 대한 윤리적 책임을 강조하는데 이는 다문화 사회에 도래한 현 사회에서 소통의 패러다임으로 적용할 수 있다는 것에 의미가 있기 때문이다. '다름'에 대하여 경계-짓기보다는 타자의 다양성을 인정하고 공존을 도모하는 자세가 필요하다. 이때의 '공존'은 중심부로 포섭하여 중심부의 확대를 가져오는 형태가 아니라 탈중심을 통해 서로 연합되는 것이어야 한다. 본고에서는 서사에 재현되는 타자와의 공존의 양상을 분석하여 그 가능성을 밝히고자 한다. 서사란 인간의 근원적 욕망이자 경험을 구성하는 인지적 과정이다. 인간은 서사에 자신을 스스로 투사하고 이해하려 한다. 서사에 나타나는 타자성을 분석하여 타인에 대한 공존의 가능성을 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다. 이에 본고는 기예르모 델 토로의 을 텍스트로 하여 작품 내 캐릭터의 형상화 방식과 관계 맺기의 스토리텔링을 분석함으로써 공존의 가능성과 방향을 제언하고자 하였다.

Single nucleotide polymorphism of GSTP1 and pathological complete response in locally advanced rectal cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant concomitant radiochemotherapy

  • Purpose: Standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer consists of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy with concomitant fluoropyrimidine or oxaliplatin and surgery with curative intent. Pathological complete response has shown to be predictive for better outcome and survival; nevertheless there are no biological or genetic factors predictive for response to treatment. We explored the correlation between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) GSTP1 (A313G) and XRCC1 (G28152A), and the pathological complete response and survival after neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Genotypes GSTP1 (A313G) and XRCC1 (G28152A) were determined by pyrosequencing technology in 80 patients affected by locally advanced rectal cancer. Results: The overall rate of pathological complete response in our study population was 18.75%. Patients homozygous AA for GSTP1 (A313G) presented a rate of pathological complete response of 26.6% as compared to 8.5% of the AG+GG population (p = 0.04). The heterozygous comparison (AA vs. AG) showed a significant difference in the rate of pathological complete response (26.6% vs. 6.8%; p = 0.034). GSTP1 AA+AG patients presented a 5- and 8-year cancer-specific survival longer than GSTP1 GG patients (87.7% and 83.3% vs. 44.4% and 44.4%, respectively) (p = 0.014). Overall survival showed only a trend toward significance in favor of the haplotypes GSTP1 AA+AG. No significant correlations were found for XRCC1 (G28152A). Conclusion: Our results suggest that GSTP1 (A313G) may predict a higher rate of pathological complete response after neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy and a better outcome, and should be considered in a more extensive analysis with the aim of personalization of radiation treatment.
