  • An intelligent Kalman filter (IKF) is proposed for tracking an incoming anti-ship missile. In the proposed IKF, the unknown target acceleration is regarded as an additive process noise. When the target maneuver is occurred, the residual of the Kalman filter increases in proportion to its magnitude. From this fact, the overall process noise variance can be approximated from the filter residual and its variation at every sampling time. A fuzzy system is utilized to approximate this valiance, and the genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to optimize the fuzzy system. In computer simulations, the tracking performance of the proposed IKF is compared with those of conventional maneuvering target tracking methods.

  • This paper presents a design of fuzzy power system stabilizer (FPSS) using adaptive evolutionary computation (AEC). We have proposed an adaptive evolutionary algorithm which uses a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner in order to take merits of two different evolutionary computations. FPSS shows better control performances than conventional power system stabilizer (CPSS) in three-phase fault with heavy load which is used when tuning FPSS. To show the robustness of the proposed FPSS, it is appliedto damp the low frequency oscillations caused by disturbances such as three-phase fault with normal and light load, the angle deviation of generator with normal and light load and the angle deviation of generator with heavy load. Proposed FPSS shows better robustness than CPSS.

  • When the target maneuver occurs, the estimate of the standard Kalman filter is biased and its performance may be seriously degraded. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new intelligent estimation algorithm for a maneuvering target. This algorithm is to estimate the unknown target maneuver by a fuzzy system using the relation between the filter residual and its variation. The detected acceleration input is regarded as an additive process noise. To optimize the employed fuzzy system, the genetic algorithm (GA) is utilized. And then, the modified filter is corrected by the new update equation method using the fuzzy system. The tracking performance of the proposed method is compared with those of an interacting multiple model (IMM).

  • In the sender-initiated load balancing algorithms, the sender continues to send an unnecessary request message fur load transfer until a receiver is found while the system load is heavy. Meanwhile, in the receiver-initiated load balancing algorithms, the receiver continues to send an unnecessary request message for load acquisition until a sender is found while the system load is light. These unnecessary request messages result in inefficient communications, low CPU utilization, and low system throughput in distributed systems. To solve these problems, in this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm based approach fur improved sender-initiated and receiver-initiated load balancing. The proposed algorithm is used for new adaptive load balancing approach. Compared with the conventional sender-initiated and receiver-initiated load balancing algorithms, the proposed algorithm decreases the response time and increases the acceptance rate.

  • Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA) proposed by J. H. Holland is a population-based optimization method based on the principle of the Darwinian natural selection. The theoretical foundations of GA are the Schema Theorem and the Building Block Hypothesis. Although GA does well in many applications as an optimization method, still it does not guarantee the convergence to a global optimum in GA-hard problems and deceptive problems. Therefore as an alternative scheme, there is a growing interest in a co-evolutionary system, where two populations constantly interact and co-evolve. In this paper we propose an extended schema theorem associated with a schema co-evolutionary algorithm(SCEA), which explains why the co-evolutionary algorithm works better than SGA. The experimental results show that the SCEA works well in optimization problems including deceptive functions.

  • This paper proposes improvement on sensorless vector control performance of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with sliding mode observer. An adaptive observer gain and second order cascade low-pass filter (LPF) were used to improve the estimation accuracy of the rotor position and speed. The adaptive observer gain was applied to suppress the chattering intensity and obtained by using the Lyapunov's stability criterion. The second order cascade LPF was designed for the system to escalate the filtering performance of the back-emf estimation. Furthermore, genetic algorithm was used to optimize the system PI controller's performance. Simulation results showed the effectiveness of the suggested improvement strategy. Moreover, the strategy was useful for the sensorless vector control of PMSM to operate on the low-speed area.

  • As many sensors and actuators are used in automated systems, various industrial networks are adopted for digital control system. In order to take advantages of the networking, however, the network implementation should be carefully designed to satisfy real-time requirements considering network delays. This paper presents the implementation scheme of a networked control system via Profibus-DP network. More specifically, the effect of the network delay on the control performance was evaluated on a Profibus-DP testbed, and a GA-based PID tuning algorithm is proposed to design controllers suitable for networked control systems.

  • This study presents the performance optimization of hypervelocity launcher system by using the experimentall data. During the optimization, the RSM (Response Surface Method) is adopted to find the operating parameters that could maximize the projectile speed. To construct a reliable response surface model, 3 full factorial method is used with the selected design variables, such as piston mass and 2 driver fill pressure. Nine test data could successfully construct the reasonable response surface, which used to yield the optimal operational conditions of the system using the genetic algorithm. The optimization results are confirmed by the experimental test with a good accuracy. Thus, the optimization can improve the performance of the facility.

  • Load sharing is a critical resource in computer system. In sender-initiated load sharing algorithms, the sender continues to send unnecessary request messages for load transfer until a receiver is found while the system load is heavy. Meanwhile, in the receiver initiated load sharing algorithms, the receiver continues to send an unnecessary request message for load acquisition until a sender is found while the system load is light. These unnecessary request messages result in inefficient communications, low CPU utilization, and low system throughput in distributed systems. To solve these problems, we propose a genetic algorithm based approach for improved sender-initiated and receiver-initiated load sharing in distributed systems. And we expand this algorithm to an adaptive load sharing algorithm. Compared with the conventional sender-initiated and receiver-initiated algorithms, the proposed algorithm decreases the response time and task processing time.
