Levels of genetic diversity, population genetic structure, and gene flow in Hosta yingeri, a herbaceous perennial endemic to Taehuksan, Sohuksan, and Hong Islands, were investigated. Starch gel electrophoresis was conducted on leaves for 101 plants collected from three populations. Although the distribution of thespecies is restricted in the islands, it maintains high levels of genetic variatin; 64% of polymorphic loci in at least one population (Ps), the mean number of alleles per locus (Ap) of 1.92, and the mean effective number of alleles per locus (Aep) of 1.52. Overall, mean genetic diversity (Hep=0.250) was substantially higher than mean estimate for species with very similarlife history traits (0.102). Large populaton size, the persistence of multiple generations within populations, high fecundity, predominantly outcrossing breeding system, large size of pollinator visitation areas may be explanatory factors contributing the higher level of genetic diversity maintained within populations. Analysis of fixation indices showed an overall slight excess of heterozygotes (mean FIS=-0.066) relative to Hardy-Weinberg expectations, which may in part be due to the near self-incompatible breeding system in the species. Significant differences in allele frequencies among populaitns were found for 14 out of 16 polymorphic loci (P<0.05). Slightly more than 80% of the total variation in the species was common to all populations (GST=0.198). As expected, indirect estimate of the number of migrants per generation (Nm=0.45, calculated from mean GST) and nine private alleles found in the three populations indicate that gene movement among three isolated island populations was low.

In this study, we introduce the design methodology of an optimized type-2 fuzzy cascade controller with the aid of hierarchical fair competition-based genetic algorithm(HFCGA) for ball & beam system. The ball & beam system consists of servo motor, beam and ball, and remains mutually connected in line in itself. The ball & beam system determines the position of ball through the control of a servo motor. Consequently the displacement change of the position of the moving ball and its ensuing change of the angle of the beam results in the change of the position angle of a servo motor. The type-2 fuzzy cascade controller scheme consists of the outer controller and the inner controller as two cascaded fuzzy controllers. In type-2 fuzzy logic controller(FLC) as the expanded type of type-1 fuzzy logic controller(FLC), we can effectively improve the control characteristic by using the footprint of uncertainty(FOU) of membership function. The control parameters(scaling factors) of each fuzzy controller using HFCGA which is a kind of parallel genetic algorithms(PGAs). HFCGA helps alleviate the premature convergence being generated in conventional genetic algorithms(GAs). We estimated controller characteristic parameters of optimized type-2 fuzzy cascade controller applied ball & beam system such as maximum overshoot, delay time, rise time, settling time and steady-state error. For a detailed comparative analysis from the viewpoint of the performance results and the design methodology, the proposed method for the ball & beam system which is realized by the fuzzy cascade controller based on HFCGA, is presented in comparison with the conventional PD cascade controller based on serial genetic algorithms.

We introduce the fuzzy cascade controller scheme which consists of the outer(1st) controller and the inner(2nd) controller as two cascaded fuzzy controllers, and auto-tune the control parameters(scaling factors) of each fuzzy controller using HFCGA. The inner controller controls the position of lever arm which corresponds to the position angle of a servo motor and the outer controller decides the set-point value of the inner controller. HFCGA is a kind of parallel genetic algorithms(PGAs), and helps alleviate the premature convergence being generated in conventional genetic algorithms (GAs). For a detailed comparative analysis from the viewpoint of the performance results and the design methodology, the proposed method for the ball & beam system which is realized by the fuzzy cascade controller based on HFCGA, is presented in comparison with the conventional PD cascade controller based on serial genetic algorithms.

This study proposes a genetic algorithm using Pr(equation omitted)fer number for the traveling salesman problem(PNGATSP). Nearest neighbor nodes are mixed with randomly selected nodes at the stage of generating initial solutions. Proposed PNGATSP adopts a few ideas which are different from traditional genetic algorithms. For instance, an exponential fitness function and elitism are used and Pr(equation omitted)fer number is used for encoding TSP. Genetic operators are selected by experiments, which make a good solution among four combinations of conventional genetic operators and new genetic operators. For respective combinations, robust set of parameters is determined by the experimental designing approach. The feature of Pr(equation omitted)fer number code for TSP and the search power of GA using Pr(equation omitted)fer number is analysed. The best is a combination of OX(order crossover) and swap, which is superior to the other experimented combinations of genetic operators by 1.0%∼12.8% deviation.
Optimum design of most structural system requires that design variables are regarded as discrete quantities. This paper presents the use of Genetic Algorithm for determining the optimum design for truss with discrete variables. Genetic Algorithm are know as heuristic search algorithms, and are effective global search methods for discrete optimization. In this paper, Elitism and the method of conferring penalty parameters in the design variables, in order to achieve improved fitness in the reproduction process, is used in the Genetic Algorithm. A 10-Bar plane truss and a 25-Bar space truss are used for discrete optimization. These structures are designed for stress and displacement constraints, but buckling is not considered. In particular, we obtain continuous solution using Genetic Algorithms for a 10-bar truss, compared with other results. The effectiveness of Genetic Algorithms for global optimization is demonstrated through two truss examples.
Recently genetic algorithm techniques have widely used in adaptive and control schemes for production systems. However, generally it costs a lot of time for leaming in the case applied in control system. Furthermore, the physical meaning of genetic algorithm constructed as a result is not obvious. And this method has been used as a learning algorithm to estimate the parameter of a genetic algorithm used for identification of the process dynamics of Butter-Worth analog filter and it was shown that this method offered superior capability over the genetic algorithm. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the parameter identification problem for linear and nonlinear digital filters. This paper goal estimate Butter-Worth analog filter parameter using the genetic algorithm.

Flutter characteristics of composite curved wing were investigated in this study. The efficient and robust system for the flutter optimization of general composite curved wing models has been developed using the coupled computational method based on both the standard genetic algorithm and the micro genetic algorithms. Micro genetic algorithm is used as an alternative method to overcome the relatively poor exploitation characteristics of the standard genetic algorithm. The present results show that the micro genetic algorithm is more efficient in order to find optimized lay-ups for a composite curved wing model. It is found that the flutter stability of curved wing model can be significantly increased using composite materials with proper optimum lamination design when compared to the case of isotropic wing model under the same weight condition.
A method is proposed which searches for optimal structures of Neural Networks (NN) using Genetic Algorithm (GA). The purpose of the method lies in not only finding an optimal NN structure but also leading us to the goal of self-organized control system that acquires its structure and its functionality by itself depending on its environment.
This paper presents a new approach on genetic algorithms to economic dispatch problem for valve point discontinuities. Proposed approach in this paper on genetic algorithms improves the performance to solve economic dispatch problem for valve point discontinuities through combination in penalty function with death penalty, generation-apart elitism, atavism and heuristic crossover. Numerical results on an actual utility system consisted of 13 thermal units show that the proposed approach is faster and robuster than classical genetic algorithm.
