  • The crystal morphology of hydroxyapatite [HAp] phase in gelatin [GEL] matrices was investigated with the condition of a GEL precursor treatment in an aqueous solution of $H_{3}PO_{4}$ at $37-80^{\circ}C$. Needle-shaped nanocomposite particles were prepared through a dynamic reaction during a coprecipitation process using a phosphoric GEL solution. Various types of mineralized morphology appeared with a phosphorylated condition of the GEL solution. HAp/GEL nanocomposite slurries showed the existence of an octacalcium phosphate [OCP] phase during the process.

  • This presentation highlights work from the authors' laboratories on the various kinds of oxide optical materials, mainly luminescence and pigment materials with different forms (powder, core-shell structures, thin film and patterning) prepared by the Pechini-type sol-gel (PSG) process. The PSG process which uses the common metal salts (nitrates, acetates, chlorides etc) as precursors and citric acid (CA) as chelating ligands of metal ions and polyhydroxy alcohol (such as ethylene glycol or poly ethylene glycol) as cross-linking agent to form a polymeric resin on molecular level, allowing the preparation of many forms of luminescent materials.

  • Piezoelectric or magnetostrictive materials, known as smart materials, have been researched widely for sensors or actuators in micro system technology. In our research, thick sol-gel lead zirconate titanate(Pb(Zr$\sub$1-x/Ti$\sub$x/)O$_3$) films were fabricated and their characteristics were investigated f3r angular rate sensor applications. The thickness of the PZT films is 1.5${\mu}$m, which is required by a vibration angular rate sensor for a good actuation and sensing. The remnant polarization of the PZT flms is 12.0 ${\mu}$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The electromechanical constants of PZT thin film showed the value of susceptance(B) of 4800${\mu}$ s at capacitance of 790pF. The PZT films were applied to the vibration angular rate sensor structure and the vibration of 1.78 ${\mu}$m in amplitude at the resonant frequency of 35.8㎑ was obtained by driving voltage of 5V$\sub$p-p/ of bulk piezoelectric materials with out of phase signal through voltage and inverting amplifier.

  • Antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) thin films on glass substrate were prepared by the chemical solution deposition (CSD) method, using sol-gel solution synthesized by non-alkoxide precursors and the sol-gel route. The crystallinity and electrical properties of ATO thin films were investigated as a function of the annealing condition (both annealing environments and temperatures), and antimony (Sb) doping concentration. Electrical resistivity, carrier concentration, Hall mobility and optical transmittance of ATO thin films were improved by Sb doping up to 5~8 mol% and annealing in a low vacuum atmosphere, compared to the undoped tin oxide counterpart. 5 mol% Sb doped ATO film annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ in a low vacuum atmosphere showed the highest electrical properties, with electrical resistivity of about $8{\sim}10{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, and optical transmittance of ~85% in the visible range. Our research demonstrates the feasibility of low-cost solution-processed transparent conductive oxide thin films, by controlling the appropriate doping concentration and annealing conditions.

  • In this study, we attempt to synthesize the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ yellow phosphor by sol-gel technique. Based on the blue emitting diodes as primary light source, white light emitting diodes have been manufactured using the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ yellow phosphor as the luminescent material. Luminescent efficiency of yellow phosphor as well as that of blue LED is very important factor to enhance the luminescent efficiency of white LED. In order to improve the luminescent efficiency, we have synthesized the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ phosphor by sol-gel technique. To research optimum condition of gelation reaction, the ratio of $H_{2}O$ to TEOS was fixed as 60:1. When the drying temperature was at $100^{\circ}C$, emission intensity was better than at $70^{\circ}C$. The critical $Eu^{2+}$ concentration was estimated to be about 0.05 mol and sintering temperature at $1300^{\circ}C$ was indicated best emission intensity.

  • The synthesis behavior of nanoporous silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure was observed using TEOS as a source material and glycerol as a dry control chemical additive (DCCA). Silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure was synthesized via sono-gel process using hexamethyldiazane (HMDS) as a modification agent and n-hexane as a main solvent. The wet gel with a modified surface was dried at $105^{\circ}C$ under ambient pressure. The addition of glycerol appears to give the wet gel a more homogeneous microstructure. However, glycerol also retarded the rate of surface modification and solvent exchange. Silica aerogel completely filled the macroporous ceramic structure without defect in the condition of surface modification (20% HMDS/nhexane at 36hr).

  • Oil spills caused by the accidents have been occurred from house and factory waste, grounded tanker, the rupture of storage tank and oil pipelines, the deterioration of various industrial facilities, etc. Many oil spills result in contamination of shorelines and workplace. Fire and explosion may happen from these spills. There are several technologies used for clean-up application, which include use of oil dispersing agents, absorbents, solidifiers, booms and skimmers by physical, chemical, and biological methods. Methods for oil spill clean-up operation are classified into the absorption type, gel type and self-swelling type. Porous materials with oil absorptive properties are classified into micropore, mesopore, and macropore depending on their pore sizes. Recently, new porous materials with smaller size have been developed, but the selective oil absorption in water-in-oil interface demonstrates the macro pore size. In this study oil absorption effects were evaluated using the organic porous materials with a complex function of gel type and swelling type. Samples were subjected to analysis by FT-IR spectroscopy and were characterized in terms of gel formation and morphologies. Oil sorption capacity, pressure retention force and gel strength were also measured. From these results, the physicochemical reactivity before and after gelation was verified and the industrial applications of clean-up operation were suggested.

  • Recently, with the rapid development of the waveguide division multiplexing (WDM) systems for large capacity and flexibility of information network, the broad band 1.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ erbium-doped waveguide amplifier (EDWA) become important. The main factors affecting the performance of sol-gel-based waveguides are non-radiative relaxation channels due to rare-earth concentration quenching and to vibration of the OH groups Therefore, the sol-gel process has to be carefully controlled in order to minimize the residual OH content.

  • Sol-gel processing, which started some decades back as a laboratory curiosity, has proved to be a powerful and versatile technique for the synthesis of materials. The utility of the sol-gel method for producing glass and ceramic materials in the form of powders, fibers, thin films and bulk shapes with high purity, functional microstructures and potentially high chemical homogeneity at relatively low temperature (compared to conventional processing) has been discussed.

  • In this study, mullite-zirconia comosite was fabricated by adding ZrOCl2.8H2O using of boehmite gel coating to Hadong kaolin (pink A grade) in order to enhance strength of the mullite specimens. The influence of ZrOCl2.8H2O content and fireing temperature on the crystall phase, microstructure, bulk density, strength of the specimens was investigated. Mullite-zirconia composite was produced in the process of coating zirconia to mullite powder synthesized thereafter and mixing simultaneously of starting materials with boehmite-zirconia gel. Maximum strength with in this study was 251 sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2h. Bulk density and strength of the composite with zirconia coated mullite was higher than simultaneous on mixture of starting materials.
