  • In the present study we examined latitudinal trend of the number of species and species diversity of rocky subtidal shelled gastropods. Specimens were sampled from four wave-exposed sites along the eastern coast of Korea between Sockcho (38$^{\circ}$14"N_ and Busan (35$^{\circ}$06"N), covering a range of over ca. 440 km and 4$^{\circ}$ of latitude. At a small local scale, the number of species showed a latitudinal trend, decreased with decreasing of latitude, even though no clear trends in species diversity were detected. The present result, consequently, suggest that regulation of small-scale local diversity presumably results from the difference of the local micro-environment.

  • We report three new records Korean marine gastropods. The new record species are Hipponix acuta, Lyncina (Ponda) carneola, and Velutina (Velutella) plicatilis cryptospira. As a result, the family Hipponicidae in Korea turned out to be 5 species of 4 genera, Cypraeidae are 14 species of 8 genera, and Velutinidae are 7 species of 3 genera, respectively.

  • The top shell, Omphalius rusticus (Gastropoda: Trochidae), is marine mollusk inhabiting underneath a rock in the intertidal zone of the coasts of Korea and Japan, and it is one of the edible gastropods. This species is a herbivorous animal. Up to now, there have been some reports on the Trochidae: aspects of classification, spawning periodicity, production, growth and size-frequency distribution of living populations, feeding, reproductive cycle, and induction of larval metamorphosis. • We have investigated introduced foreign molluscs into Korea since 1993. A total of 2,338 species of 157 families were investigated. Among them, 2,013 species of 106 families were gastropods, 307 species of 44 families were bivalves, nine species of two families were scaphopods, and nine species of four families in cephalopods. 2,128 species were newly given Korean name.

  • Two species and one subspecies of Trochidae collected from 13 localities in South Korea are described, all of which are newly known to Korea: Tristichotrochus condors multifiratu (Sowerby, 1875), Euchelus rubro fA. Adams, 1853) and Conotulopio (Awuiitrochus) mustelina (Gould, 1861). As a result, the Korean Trochidae comprises 26 species and 7 subspecies in 12 genera.

  • Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in seventy marine organisms (40 species) from the Korean coast. PAHs were present in all the organisms. The level of total PAHs in the organisms varied from 0.45 to 224 ng/g dry weight and the carcinogenic PAHs varied from 0.05 to 49.8 ng/g dry weight. The PAHs residues according to the marine organisms showed a highest content in bivalve species, and followed by crustaceans, cephalopods, fish and gastropods. Human dietary intake of total PAHs through marine organism in Korea was estimated to be 4.12 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.67 ng/kg body weight/day for carcinogenic PAHs. The relative contributions of individual species to the total dietary intake of PAHs were in the order of bivalves $(53.4{\%})$, fish $(21.9{\%})$, crustaceans $(15.3{\%})$, cephalopods $(8.8{\%})$ and gastropods $(0.6{\%})$. Daily dietary intake of $PAH_{TEQ}$ expressed as a TEQ value was estimated to be 0.13 pg TEQ/kg body weight/day, which did not exceed a tolerable daily intake (TDI) proposed by the KFDA and the WHO as well as the UK toxicity committee. Lifetime cancer risk due to ingestion of marine species by the Korean adult was evaluated using the equation estimating exposure of food ingestion. Although approximately $23{\%}$ of cumulative frequency of the sampled marine species exceeded the cancer risk guideline, lifetime cancer risk associated with marine organism consumption was negligible. Results indicate that dietary intake of PAHs through the consumption of the Korean marine organisms seems to be safe for human ingestion with negligible cancer risk.

  • Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was analyzed in various marine organisms of Korea. HCB was detected in all organism samples with residual concentrations from 0.51 to 222 pg/g wet weight. HCB residue was the highest content in crustacean, and followed by bivalves, fish, cephalopods and gastropods. The residues were comparable to or lower than those in marine organisms of other countries. Daily dietary intake of HCB from seafood was estimated to be 13.4 pg/kg body weight/day. The relative contribution of taxonomic group to the total dietary intake of HCB were in the order of crustaceans $(40.1\%)$, bivalves $(34.2\%)$, fish $(23.1\%)$, cephalopods $(2.22\%)$, and gastropods $(0.38\%)$. Daily dietary intake of HCB expressed as toxic equivalent (TEQ) value was estimated to be $1.34\times10^{-3}pg$ TEQ/kg body weight/day. This value did not exceed tolerable daily intake (TDI) proposed by the WHO, the UK toxicity committee and the KFDA. Cancer risk and target hazard quotient (THQ) due to the consumption of the marine organism in Korean adult population were evaluated using the exposure equation of food ingestion. This result suggests that dietary intake of HCB by the consumption of Korean seafood seems to be safe for human health with negligible cancer and non-cancer risks so far.
