Galaxies are known to evolve passively in the cluster environment. Indeed, much evidence for HI stripping has been found in cluster galaxies to date, which is likely to be connected to their low star formation rate. What is still puzzling however, is that the molecular gas, which is believed to be more directly related to star formation, shows no significant difference in its fraction between the cluster population and the field galaxies. Therefore, HI stripping alone does not seem to be enough to fully understand how galaxies become passive in galaxy clusters. Intriguingly, our recent high resolution CO study of a subsample of Virgo spirals which are undergoing strong ICM pressure has revealed a highly disturbed molecular gas morphology and kinematics. The morphological and kinematical peculiarities in their CO data have many properties in common with those of HI gas in the sample, indicating that strong ICM pressure in fact can have impacts on dense gas deep inside of a galaxy. This implies that it is the molecular gas conditions rather than the molecular gas stripping which is more responsible for quenching of star formation in cluster galaxies. In this study, using multi transitions of 12CO and 13CO, we investigate the density and temperature distributions of CO gas of a Virgo spiral galaxy, NGC 4402 to probe the physical and chemical properties of molecular gas and their relations to star formation activities.
Environmental impact of human activities has become a great concern in most of the countries world-wide, and for years. It has recently focused on potential climate changes due to the increase of green house gases content in the atmosphere. One of these gases is $SF_6$, which is an essential material in electrical applications having excellent dielectric and arc-quenching properties. Though the actual contribution of $SF_6$ to global warming is negligible at present, the control of $SF_6$ emissions seems to be nevertheless imperative. Actually, it is listed in the Kyoto protocol that emissions should not only be duly reported but also the electrical industry which is now the major user of this gas must be able to show that it is possible to use this gas and at the same time preserve the environment. For the development of environmentally-benign electric power equipment and systems, novel gases or gas mixtures are strongly required as the alternatives of $SF_6$ gas. Until now, most research work is focused on the $SF_6/N_2$ mixed gas which is suitable for application in the electrical apparatus with slightly non-uniform fields. Recently, $SF_6/CO_2$ mixed gas also is expected to be promising as a $SF_6$ alternative, especially in highly non-uniform fields and in a gas-impregnated film insulation system. Including these results, the author reviews the research trend or reducing the environmental impact of $SF_6$ gas in this paper.
Ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM) is an important environmental process, which causes star formation quenching by effectively removing cold interstellar gas from galaxies in dense environments. The evidence of diffuse atomic gas stripping has been reported in several HI imaging studies. However, it is still under debate whether molecular gas (i.e., a more direct ingredient for star formation) can be also affected and/or stripped by ram pressure. The goal of this thesis is to understand the impact of ram pressure on the molecular gas content of cluster galaxies and hence star formation activity. To achieve this, we conducted a series of detailed studies on the molecular gas properties of three Virgo spiral galaxies with clear signs of active HI gas stripping (NGC 4330, NGC 4402, and NGC 4522) based on high-resolution CO data obtained from the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). As a result, we find the evidence that the molecular gas disk also gets affected by ram pressure in similar ways as HI even well inside of the stellar disk. In addition, we detected extraplanar 13CO clumps in one of the sample, which is the first case ever reported in ram pressure stripped galaxies. By analyzing multi-wavelength data (e.g., Hα, UV, HI, and CO), we discuss detailed processes of how ram pressure affects star formation activities and hence evolution of cluster galaxies. We also discuss the origin of extraplanar 13CO, and how ram pressure can potentially contribute to the chemical evolution of the ICM.

The technology of line heating has evolved in various methods. Among them, fossil fuels like ethylene gas and LPG(Liquid Petroleum Gas) are widely used due to their simple utility. In the meantime, the technology implementing high frequency for line heating has also been developed continually, but its manufacturing technology or application includes lots of problems by now. One of the main characteristics of line heating using conventional technolob'Y is the quenching effect followed by heating process. On the other hand, hydrox gas which is mixed by hydrogen and oxygen is a prominent candidate for an application without above shortcomings. Especially, it is found that line heating using hydrox gas is tremendously effective taking low cost as well as low noise. In this paper, a small cell with high efficiency which can minimize installing space is developed to deal with the problem installing in narrow place. Experiments to prove the validation, efficiency and effectiveness is carried out by characterizing in the line heating of steel. It is found that the energy saving of using hydrox gas for line heating is significant and that the deviation performance is reduced by 78~89%. Furthermore, the noise is also reduced as amount of 18.3% though the heating time is not too different.

Self-blast circuit breakers utilize the energy dissipated by the arc itself to create the required conditions for arc quenching during the current zero. The high-current simulation provides information about the mixing process of the hot PTFE cloud with $SF_6$ gas which is difficult to access for measurement. But it is also hard to simulate flow phenomenon because the flow in interrupter with high current, $SF_6$-PTFE mixture vapor and complex physical behavior including radiation, calculation of electric field. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) package, the conservation equation for the gas and temperature, velocity and electric fields within breaker can be solved. Results show good agreement between the predicted and measured pressure rise in the thermal chamber.
We study the evolution of a late-type galaxy (LTG) in a rich cluster environment by using N-body/SPH simulations. To do that we perform a set of simulations of a LTG falling in a Coma-like cluster and also the LTG colliding with early-type galaxies (ETGs) multiple times in the cluster environment. We use a catalog of the Coma cluster in order to estimate the typical number of collisions and the closest approach distances that a LTG would experience in the cluster. We investigate the cold gas depletion and star formation quenching of our LTG model influenced by the hot cluster gas as well as the hot halo gas of the colliding ETGs.

The formation process of hydrocarbon emissions was investigated in SI engine. The time- resolved concentrations of hydrocarbon emissions were measured using a high gas sampling valve and a gas chromatography. The gas was sampled at exhaust port, or the position of spark plug, or the wall of combustion chamber. The experiments were conducted using the Alpha engine of Hyundai Motor Company. The fuel used was methanol or propane. It was found that the effect of the quenching layer of combustion chamber wall on hydrocarbon emissions was not significant. The increasing rate of hydrocarbon concentration at combustion chamber wall near crevice and oil layer after flame was reached was much higher than that at the position of spark plug. The hydrocarbon concentrations at exhaust port had two peak values just after opening exhaust valve and just before closing it.
The Xe plasma flat lamp, considered to be a new eco-friendly LCD backlight, requires a further improvement of its luminance and luminous efficiency. To improve the performance of this type of lamp, it is necessary to understand the effects of the discharge variables on the luminous characteristics of the lamp. In this study, the luminous characteristics of a coplanartype Xe plasma flat lamp with a teeth-type electrode pattern were analyzed while varying the gas composition, gas pressure and input voltage. The effects of the phosphor layer on the discharge and the luminous characteristics of the lamp were also studied. The luminous efficiency of the coplanar-type Xe plasma flat lamp improved as the Xe input ratio and gas pressure increased. Higher luminous efficiency was also obtained when helium (He) was used as a buffer gas and when a phosphor layer was fabricated on the electrode region. In contrast, the luminous efficiency was reduced with increasing the input voltage. It was found that the infrared emissions from the lamp were affected by the Xe excitation rate in the plasma, the Xe gas density, the collisional quenching of excited Xe species by gas molecules, and the recombination rate between the Xe ions and electrons.
Early-type galaxies represent the end point of galaxy evolution and, despite pervasive residual star formation, are generally considered "red and dead", that is composed exclusively of old stars with no star formation. Here, their molecular gas content is constrained and discussed in relation to their evolution, supporting the continuing importance of minor mergers and/or cold gas accretion. First, as part of the Atlas3D survey, the first complete, large, volume-limited survey of CO in normal early-type galaxies is presented. At least of 23% of local early-types possess a substantial amount of molecular gas, the necessary ingredient for star formation, independent of mass and environment but dependent on the specific stellar angular momentum. Second, using CO synthesis imaging, the extent of the molecular gas is constrained and a variety of morphologies is revealed. The kinematics of the molecular gas and stars are often misaligned, implying an external gas origin in over a third of all systems, more than half in the field, while external gas accretion must be shot down in clusters. Third, many objects appear to be in the process of forming regular kpc-size decoupled disks, and a star formation sequence can be sketched by piecing together multi-wavelength information on the molecular gas, current star formation, and young stars. Fourth, early-type galaxies do not seem to systematically obey all our usual prejudices regarding star formation (e.g. Schmidt-Kennicutt law, far infrared-radio continuum correlation), suggesting a greater diversity in star formation processes than observed in disk galaxies and the possibility of "morphological quenching". Lastly, a first step toward constraining the physical properties of the molecular gas is taken, by modeling the line ratios of density- and opacity-sensitive molecules in a few objects. Taken together, these observations argue for the continuing importance of (minor) mergers and cold gas accretion in local early-types, and they provide a much greater understanding of the gas cycle in the galaxies harbouring most of the stellar mass. In the future, better dust masses and dust-to-gas mass ratios from Herschel should allow to place entirely independent constraints on the gas supply, while spatially-resolved high-density molecular gas tracers observed with ALMA will probe the interstellar medium and star formation laws locally in a regime entirely different from that normally probed in spiral galaxies.
