  • Parametric studies based on analysis of lubrication system of a four cylinder gasoline engine are illustrated system in this paper. In development process of engine lubrication system, parts of failure cases are related with oil pull over and oil churning phenomenon. The crankcase & head system pressure by oil churning phenomenon are gradual increased. It cause oil pull over phenomenon at engine breather line and oil over-consumption. In order to improve oil reduction and oil pull over phenomenon are also considered in the developing state. For this study, the characteristics of engine lubrication system are measured at various tilting angle and drain hole sizes. In addition, the oil flow & oil quantity are tested by blow by meter and catch jar. Results are presented to stabilize the oil supply system at sever driving condition. The data from present study are available for the engine lubrication system.

  • Recently, high performance machining center requires special type of sealing mechanism that prevent a leakage of oil jet or oil mist lubrication system. Sealing of oil-air mixture plays important r oles to have an enhanced lubrication for performance machining center. Current work emphasizes on investigations of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve sealing capabilities of conventional labyrinth seals, air jet is injected against the leakage flow. In this study, an adapted model is introduced to improve sealing capability of conventional non-contact type seals. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. Both of a numerical analysis by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. The sealing effects of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude aic studied in various parameters. Gas or liquid has been used as a working fluid for most of nori-contact types seals including the labyrinth seal. However, it is more reasonable to regard two-phase flows because oil mist or oil jet are used for high performance spindle's lubrication. In this study, working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil and air phase. Both of turbulence and compressible flow model are also introduced in a CFD analysis to represent an isentropic process. Estimation of non-leaking property is determined by amount of pressure drop in the leakage path. Results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effect of the sealing improvement is explained as decreasing of leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger

  • The noncontacting groove end face seal is one of various approaches to sealing gases with a single seal. Gas pumped into groove maintains operating gap and lubricates between primary ring and mating ring. So it removes heat and decreases face wear. In this paper, K-type and T-type grooved seals have been analyzed numerically using the finite element method. It explains the effects of groove shapes in gas seals along rotating speeds with a temperature gradient, face distortion, stress and so on. The calculated FEM results show the operating gap and rotating speed are strongly related to the leakages of a gas seal and that T-type groove seal shows a good thermal performance compared to K-type groove seal.

  • The influence of the slip flow on the MEMS/MST based gas-lubricated proceeding bearing is investigated. Based on the modified Reynolds equation, the numerical analysis of the finite difference method was developed by applying the first order slip flow approximation. The numerical prediction of bearing performance provides the significant results concerning the slip flow effect in micro scale gas-lubricated proceeding bearing. The result indicates that the load-carrying capacity as well as the rotordynamic coefficients were significantly reduced due to the slip flow. Through this work, it is concluded that the slip flow effect could not be ignored in the micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearing.

  • A kinetic theory analysis is used to study the ultra-thin gas flow field in gas bearings. The Boltzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. Calculations are made for flows inside micro-channels of backward-facing step, forward-facing step, and slider bearings. The results are compared well with those from the DSMC method. The present method does not suffer from statistical noise which is common in particle based methods and requires less computational effort.

  • Feasibility study of gas-lubricated bearing in micro gas turbine was performed. Based on Reynolds equation, finite difference method with coupled boundary was developed to analyze bearing characteristics, such as load-carrying capacity, mass flow rates and stiffness. By the bearing force and mass flow rates analysis with the variation of supply pressure, bearing clearance and capillary radius, acceptable range of design parameters were suggested in terms of load capacity and stiffness of bearings. Additionally, coupled boundary effect on pressure distribution was investigated and it is stated that coupling could reduce all excitation force due to narrow pressure distribution.

  • In case of the limitation of Deep RIE fabrication for Micro Gas Turbine, bearing aspect ratio is limited in very small value. The characteristics such as pressure distribution load capacity and non-linearity of a short bearing of L/D=0.083 and a conventional bearing of L/D=1.0 with coupled boundary effects are investigated far Micro Gas Tlubine bearings. The coupled efffect was analyzed by mass conservation at coupled end area. The results, increasing load capacity and non-linearity due to the coupled effect of thrust and journal bearing, are obtained and the selection of journal bearing type is discussed.
