Low-threshold Photonic Crystal Lasers from InGaAsP Free-standing Slab Structures

  • Photonic band gap structures have a high potential for nearly zero-threshold lasers. This paper describes new-types of low-threshold photonic crystal lasers fabricated in InGaAsP slab waveguides free-standing in air. Two-types of photonic crystal lasers are studied. One is a single-cell nano-cavity laser formed in a square array of air holes. This photonic band gap laser operates in the smallest possible whispering gallery mode with a theoretical Q >30000 and exhibits low threshold pump power of 0.8 mW at room temperature. The nther laser does not have any cavity structure and the lasing operation originates from the enhanced optical density of states near photonic band edges. A very low threshold of 35 $\mu$W (incident pump power) is achieved from this laser at 80 K, one of the lowest values ever reported. This low threshold is benefited from low optical losses as well as enhanced material gain at low temperature.

  • This study is to analyze brand image of housing cultural center to understand how it is shown in the resting place of housing cultural center. We chose the object housing cultural center and made checklist to understand space condition and brand image reflection. housing cultural center should be reborn as a cultural rest space for customers and residents, and especially new definition of function and concept of resting place is necessary. The resting place of housing cultural center is not just offering an extra room for customers but a link-space and an intermediation-space to link the functions of each space where customers stay for long time. So there should be proper design that expresses the brand image for resting place. From the research, we found that the resting place has cafe like design with tables and chairs. Some of them are gallery-cafe like or book-cafe like to emphasize the cultural aspects. But they are not proper to express brand image. So there should be detailed guidelines of design for resting place of housing cultural center to express brand image.

A Study on the Evaluation of Placeness of Industrial Heritages Space with Cultural Characteristics - Focused on Beijing 798 Art Zone in China - (문화기반 산업유산 공간의 장소성 평가 연구 - 북경 798 예술지구를 중심으로 -)

  • This study was to build a frame and direction of an analysis of the evaltion of placeness of industrial heritages space, and then to evaluate Beijing 798. First, by studying references, 15 elements in 6 dimensions were derived from the evaluation of placeness of industrial heritage and applied in the evaluation of placeness of Beijing 798 art zone. Second, the changes of Bejing 798 art zone can be classified in 4 steps, latency, quickening, growth, and union, which has been growing from studios with artists to complex cultural art place based on studios and gallery. Third, place characteristics of 798 art zone was analysis with the measurements of morphological, perceptual, social, visual, functional, and temporal points. Fourth, a survey was done in order to evaluate placeness of Beijing 798 art zone.In conclusion, the result of the evaluation of placeness of industrial heritages space through Beijing 798 art zone shows that uniqueness and indigenousness are highly valued which verifies that the differentiation from other places and uniqueness are the essential element.

Silhouette-Edge-Based Descriptor for Human Action Representation and Recognition

  • Extraction and representation of postures and/or gestures from human activities in videos have been a focus of research in this area of action recognition. With various applications cropping up from different fields, this paper seeks to improve the performance of these action recognition machines by proposing a shape-based silhouette-edge descriptor for the human body. Information entropy, a method to measure the randomness of a sequence of symbols, is used to aid the selection of vital key postures from video frames. Morphological operations are applied to extract and stack edges to uniquely represent different actions shape-wise. To classify an action from a new input video, a Hausdorff distance measure is applied between the gallery representations and the query images formed from the proposed procedure. The method is tested on known public databases for its validation. An effective method of human action annotation and description has been effectively achieved.

  • This subject is about the study on digital contents development of traditional Korean furniture to find our traditional peculiarity that is disappearing gradually in the rapid computerization. In order to carry out this subject, we established some methodology to industrialize the culture, the style, the manufacturing process and the configuration details of traditional furniture in the form of digital contents with reference to books regarding the furniture in Chosun Dynasty and furniture collection in possession of museum, gallery, etc. This study made a database about traditional Korean furniture systematically to be used as basic materials that are available for diverse culture business as a whole with Korean identity in the future. The contents of this study are as follows: 1) Style of traditional furniture 2) Decoration of traditional furniture 3) Manufacturing process of traditional furniture 4) Configuration details of traditional furniture The contents work of traditional Korean furniture was to secure the identity of Korean furniture from the point of culture and to provide an alternative of modernization by re-illuminating the superiority of traditional furniture in discontinuation from the point of industry.

Effects of Intercalant on the Dispersibility of Silicate Layers in Clay- dispersed Nanocomposite of Poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) Copolymer

  • Clay/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) copolymer (SAN) hybrids have been prepared by simple meltmixing of two components, SAN and organophilic clays with a twin screw extruder. Effects of intercalant on the dispersibility of silicate layers in clay-dispersed nanocomposite were studied by using five different organophilic clays modified with the intercalants of different chemical structures and different fractions of intercalant. The dispersibility of 10-$\AA$-thick silicate layers of clay in the hybrid was investigated by using an X-ray diffractometer and a transmission electron microscope. It was found that if the fraction of intercalant in the organophilic clay becomes too high, SAN is difficult to intercalate into the inter-gallery of silicate layers in the hybrid prepared at 180$\^{C}$, and thus the hybrid shows poor dispersibility of silicate layers. The flexural modulus of the hybrid increases as the dispersibility of silicate layers in the hybrid increases.

A Study on the Dyeability of Urtica Dioica L. Extract (쐐기풀(Urtica Dioica L.추출물의 염색성 연구))

  • In this study, dyeability of Urtica Dioica L. extract, which is relatively less studied, was measured. The extract of this plant was used to dye cellulose and protein fiber to check its usage as a natural green dye. Three different methods were used to produce extract. Dried Urtica Dioica L. was extracted with 100% ethanol, 50% ethanol with 50% distilled water and 100% distilled water. Then dyeing solution was obtained by blending with distilled water at 1-to-1 ratio. The maximum dyeability was obtained when 100% ethanol extract of dried Urtica Dioica L. used to dye fabrics at 60 degrees celsius for 60 minutes without mordant treatment. Cotton, rayon, wool and silk were dyed and dyeability for each fiber was measured for color difference value then compared to its control. The results show that dyeability of rayon and dyeability of wool are stronger, and that when color position for each mordant is measured, color difference is most diverse on cotton with pre-mordant treatment. Color fastness to wash, perspiration and rubbing crockmeter were superb, but color fastness to light was low, therefore, additional study on this is needed to improve. Urtica Dioica L. is now expected to be used practically as green color dye as well as medicinally and edible.

Earthquake response of roller compacted concrete dams including galleries

  • The effect of galleries on the earthquake behavior of dams should be investigated to obtain more realistic results. Therefore, a roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam with and without galleries are examined under ground motion effects. For this purpose, Cine RCC dam constructed in Aydın, Turkey, is selected in applications. The optimal mesh around galleries is investigated to obtain the most realistic results. Two-dimensional finite element models of Cine RCC dam with and without galleries are prepared by using ANSYS software. Empty and full reservoir conditions were taken into account in the time-history analyses. Hydrodynamic effect of the reservoir water was taken into account considering two-dimensional fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach. It is examined that how principle stresses and displacements change by height and during earthquake. The dam-foundation-reservoir interaction was taken into consideration with contact-target element pairs. The displacements and principle stress components obtained from the linear analyses are compared each other for various cases of reservoir water and galleries. According to numerical analyses, the effect of galleries is clear on the response of RCC dam. Besides, hydrodynamic water effect obviously increases the principle stress components and horizontal displacements of the dam.

Structural identification of concrete arch dams by ambient vibration tests

  • Modal testing, widely accepted and applied method for determining the dynamic characteristics of structures for operational conditions, uses known or unknown vibrations in structures. The method's common applications includes estimation of dynamic characteristics and also damage detection and monitoring of structural performance. In this study, the structural identification of concrete arch dams is determined using ambient vibration tests which is one of the modal testing methods. For the purpose, several ambient vibration tests are conducted to an arch dam. Sensitive accelerometers were placed on the different points of the crest and a gallery of the dam, and signals are collected for the process. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique is used for the extraction of natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. A total of eight natural frequencies are attained by experimentally for each test setup, which ranges between 0-12 Hz. The results obtained from each ambient vibration tests are presented and compared with each other in detail. There is a good agreement between the results for all measurements. However, the theoretical fundamental frequency of Berke Arch Dam is a little different from the experimental.

Boosting the Face Recognition Performance of Ensemble Based LDA for Pose, Non-uniform Illuminations, and Low-Resolution Images

  • Face recognition systems have several potential applications, such as security and biometric access control. Ongoing research is focused to develop a robust face recognition algorithm that can mimic the human vision system. Face pose, non-uniform illuminations, and low-resolution are main factors that influence the performance of face recognition algorithms. This paper proposes a novel method to handle the aforementioned aspects. Proposed face recognition algorithm initially uses 68 points to locate a face in the input image and later partially uses the PCA to extract mean image. Meanwhile, the AdaBoost and the LDA are used to extract face features. In final stage, classic nearest centre classifier is used for face classification. Proposed method outperforms recent state-of-the-art face recognition algorithms by producing high recognition rate and yields much lower error rate for a very challenging situation, such as when only frontal ($0^{\circ}$) face sample is available in gallery and seven poses ($0^{\circ}$, ${\pm}30^{\circ}$, ${\pm}35^{\circ}$, and ${\pm}45^{\circ}$) as a probe on the LFW and the CMU Multi-PIE databases.
