  • The extraction of lip region is essential to Lip Reading, which is a field of image processing to get some meaningful information by the analysis of lip movement from human face image. Many conventional methods to extract lip region are proposed. One is getting the position of lip by using geometric face structure. The other discriminates lip and skin regions by using color information only. The former is more complex than the latter, however it can analyze black and white image also. The latter is very simple compared to the former, however it is very difficult to discriminate lip and skin regions because of close similarity between these two regions. And also, the accuracy is relatively low compared to the former. Conventional analysis of color coordinate systems are mostly based on specific extraction scheme for lip regions rather than coordinate system itself. In this paper, the method for selection of effective color coordinate system and chromaticity transformation to discriminate these two lip and skin region are proposed.

  • This paper proposes a recognition system of constrained handwritten Hangul and alphanumeric characters using discrete hidden Markov models (HMM). HMM process encodes the distortion and similarity among patterns of a class through a doubly stochastic approach. Characterizing the statistical properties of characters using selected features, a recognition system can be implemented by absorbing possible variations in the form. Hangul shapes are classified into six types by fuzzy inference, and their recognition is performed based on quantized features by optimally ordering features according to their effectiveness in each class. The constrained alphanumerics recognition is also performed using the same features used in Hangul recognition. The forward-backward, Viterbi, and Baum-Welch reestimation algorithms are used for training and recognition of handwritten Hangul and alphanumeric characters. Simulation result shows that the proposed method recognizes handwritten Korean characters and alphanumerics effectively.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method to detect abrupt shot changes in compressed MPEG video data by using reference ratios among video frames. The reference ratios among video frames imply the degree of similarities among adjacent frames by prediction coded type of each frames. A shot change is detected if the similarity degrees of a frame and its adjacent frames are low. This paper proposes an efficient shot change detection algorithm by using Fuzzy c-means(FCM) clustering algorithm. The FCM clustering uses the shot change probabilities evaluated in the mask matching of reference ratios and difference measure values based on frame reference ratios.

  • This paper proposes an efficient face recognition using independent component analysis(ICA) derived from the fixed point(FP) algorithm based on secant method. The secant method can exclude the complex computation of differential process from the FP based on Newton method. The proposed ICA has been applied to recognize the 20 Yale face images of $324\times324$ pixels. The experimental results show that the proposed ICA is superior to PCA not only in the restoration performance of basis images but also in the recognition performance of the trained images and the test images. Then negative angle as similarity measures has better recognition ratio than city-block and Euclidean.

  • A new iris segmentation and recognition method is described. Combining a statistical classification and elastic boundary fitting, the iris is first segmented robustly and accurately. Once the iris is segmented, one-dimensional signals are computed in the iris and decomposed into multiple frequency bands. Each decomposed signal is approximated by a piecewise linear curve connecting a small set of node points. The node points represent features of each signal. The similarity measture between two iris images is the normalized cross-correlation coefficients between simplified signals.

  • The Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) is one of the electroactive polymer (EAP) have potential application as micro actuators. In this study, IPMC is used as actuator to control of the direction for the endscopic microcapsule. Because it bends in water and wet conditions by applying a low voltage (1∼3 V) to its surfaces. The basic characteristics and the static modeling of IPMC are discussed. Also the dynamic modeling is performed using the Lagrange' equation. Computer simulation results show that the performed modeling guarantee similarity of actual system.

  • Many clustering algorithms have been used in diverse fields. When we need to group given data set into clusters, many clustering algorithms based on similarity or distance measures are considered. Most clustering works have been based on hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering algorithms. Generally, for the clustering works, researchers have used clustering algorithms case by case from these algorithms. Also they have to determine proper clustering methods subjectively by their prior knowledge. In this paper, to solve the subjective problem of clustering we make empirical comparisons of popular clustering algorithms which are hierarchical and non hierarchical techniques using Silhouette measure. We use silhouette information to evaluate the clustering results such as the number of clusters and cluster variance. We verify our comparison study by experimental results using data sets from UCI machine learning repository. Therefore we are able to use efficient and objective clustering algorithms.

  • We propose a design scheme of a binary decision tree and apply it to the tire tread pattern recognition problem. In this scheme, a binary decision tree is constructed by using fuzzy C-means( FCM ) algorithm. All the available features are used while clustering. At each node, the best feature or feature subset among these available features is selected based on proposed similarity measure. The decision tree can be used for the classification of unknown patterns. The proposed design scheme is applied to the tire tread pattern recognition problem. The design procedure including feature extraction is described. Experimental results are given to show the usefulness of this scheme.

  • This study has proposed visual-feature extraction methods for each band in wavelet domain with both spatial frequency features and multi resolution features. In addition, it has brought forward similarity measurement method using fuzzy theory and new color feature expression method taking advantage of the frequency of the same color after color quantization for reducing quantization error, a disadvantage of the existing color histogram intersection method. Experiments are performed on a database containing 1,000 color images. The proposed method gives better performance than the conventional method in both objective and subjective performance evaluation.

  • Ghost imaging (GI) technology is developing rapidly, but there are inevitably some limitations such as the influence of atmospheric turbulence. In this paper, we study a ghost imaging system in atmospheric turbulence and use a gamma-gamma (GG) model to simulate the medium to strong range of turbulence distribution. With a compressed sensing (CS) algorithm and generative adversarial network (GAN), the image can be restored well. We analyze the performance of correlation imaging, the influence of atmospheric turbulence and the restoration algorithm's effects. The restored image's peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index map (SSIM) increased to 21.9 dB and 0.67 dB, respectively. This proves that deep learning (DL) methods can restore a distorted image well, and it has specific significance for computational imaging in noisy and fuzzy environments.
