  • Frauds detection is a difficult problem, requiring huge computer resources and complicated search activities Researchers have struggled with the problem. Even though a fee research approaches have claimed that their solution is much better than others, research community has not found 'the best solution'well fitting every fraud. Because of the evolving nature of the frauds. a novel and self-adapting method should be devised. In this research a new approach is suggested to solving frauds in insurance claims credit card transaction. Based on evolutionary computing approach, the method is itself self-adjusting and evolving enough to generate a new self of decision-makin rules. We believe that this new approach will provide a promising alternative to conventional ones, in terms of computation performance and classification accuracy.

  • In our previous works, we suggested a method that extracts representative keywords from a few positive documents and assigns weights to them. To show the usefulness of the method, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of a famous classification algorithm called GIS(Generalized Instance Set) when it is combined with our method. In GIS algorithm, generalized instances are built from learning documents by a generalization function and then the K-NN algorithm is applied to them. Here, our method is used as a generalization function. For comparative works, Rocchio and Widrow-Hoff algorithms are also used as a generalization function. Experimental results show that our method is better than the others for the case that only positive documents are considered, but not when negative documents are considered together.

  • As markets and industries continue to evolve rapidly, technology opportunity discovery (TOD) has become critical to a firm's survival. From a common consensus that TOD based on a firm's capabilities is a valuable method for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and reduces the risk of failure in technology development, studies for TOD based on a firm's capabilities have been actively conducted. However, previous studies mainly focused on a firm's technological capabilities and rarely on business capabilities. Since discovered technologies can create market value when utilized in a firm's business, a firm's current business capabilities should be considered in discovering technology opportunities. In this context, this study proposes a TOD method that considers both a firm's business and technological capabilities. To this end, this study uses patent data, which represents the firm's technological capabilities, and trademark data, which represents the firm's business capabilities. The proposed method comprises four steps: 1) Constructing firm technology and business capability matrices using patent classification codes and trademark similarity group codes; 2) Transforming the capability matrices to preference matrices using the fuzzy function; 3) Identifying a target firm's candidate technology opportunities using the collaborative filtering algorithm; 4) Recommending technology opportunities using a portfolio map constructed based on technology similarity and applicability indices. A case study is conducted on a security firm to determine the validity of the proposed method. The proposed method can assist SMEs that face resource constraints in identifying technology opportunities. Further, it can be used by firms that do not possess patents since the proposed method uncovers technology opportunities based on business capabilities.

  • Recently, artificial intelligence has reached the level of top information technologies that will have significant influence over many aspects of our future lifestyles. In particular, in the fields of machine learning technologies for classification and decision-making, there have been a lot of research efforts for solving estimation and control problems that appear in the various kinds of portfolio management problems via data-driven approaches. Note that these modern data-driven approaches, which try to find solutions to the problems based on relevant empirical data rather than mathematical analyses, are useful particularly in practical application domains. In this paper, we consider some applications of modern data-driven machine learning methods for portfolio management problems. More precisely, we apply a simplified version of the sparse Gaussian process (GP) classification method for classifying users' sensitivity with respect to financial risk, and then present two portfolio management issues in which the GP application results can be useful. Experimental results show that the GP applications work well in handling simulated data sets.

  • After the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, there has been increasing concern regarding severe accidents in nuclear facilities. Severe accident scenarios are difficult for operators to monitor and identify. Therefore, accurate prediction of a severe accident is important in order to manage it appropriately in the unfavorable conditions. In this study, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, such as support vector classification (SVC), probabilistic neural network (PNN), group method of data handling (GMDH), and fuzzy neural network (FNN), were used to monitor the major transient scenarios of a severe accident caused by three different initiating events, the hot-leg loss of coolant accident (LOCA), the cold-leg LOCA, and the steam generator tube rupture in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The SVC and PNN models were used for the event classification. The GMDH and FNN models were employed to accurately predict the important timing representing severe accident scenarios. In addition, in order to verify the proposed algorithm, data from a number of numerical simulations were required in order to train the AI techniques due to the shortage of real LOCA data. The data was acquired by performing simulations using the MAAP4 code. The prediction accuracy of the three types of initiating events was sufficiently high to predict severe accident scenarios. Therefore, the AI techniques can be applied successfully in the identification and monitoring of severe accident scenarios in real PWRs.

  • Decision tree is one of the most useful analysis methods for various data mining functions, including prediction, classification, etc, from massive data. Decision tree grows by splitting nodes, during which the purity increases. It is needed to stop splitting nodes when the purity does not increase effectively or new leaves does not contain meaningful number of records. Pruning is done if a branch does not show certain level of performance. By pruning, the structure of decision tree is changed and it is implied that the previous splitting of the parent node was not effective. It is also implied that the splitting of the ancestor nodes were not effective and the choices of attributes and criteria in splitting them were not successful. It should be noticed that new attributes or criteria might be selected to split such nodes for better tries. In this paper, we suggest a procedure to modify decision tree by Fuzzy theory and splitting as an integrated approach.

  • This study proposed new methods to classify normal and epileptic seizure signals from EEG signals using peaks extracted by wavelet transform(WT) and Hilbert transform(HT) based on a neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions(NEWFM). This study has the following three steps for extracting inputs for NEWFM. In the first step, the WT was used to remove noise from EEG signals. In the second step, the HT was used to extract peaks from the wavelet coefficients. We also selected the peaks bigger than the average of peaks to extract big peaks. In the third step, statistical methods were used to extract 16 features used as inputs for NEWFM from peaks. The proposed methodology shows that accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity are 99.25%, 99.4%, 99% with 16 features, respectively. Improvement in feature selection method in view to enhancing the accuracy is planned as the future work for selecting good features from 16 features.

  • Recently, vision-based hand gesture recognition techniques have been developed for assisting elderly and disabled people to control home appliances. Frequently occurred problems which lower the hand gesture recognition rate are due to the inter-person variation and intra-person variation. The recognition difficulty caused by inter-person variation can be handled by using user dependent model and model selection technique. And the recognition difficulty caused by intra-person variation can be handled by using fuzzy logic. In this paper, we propose multivariate fuzzy decision tree learning and classification method for a hand motion recognition system for multiple users. When a user starts to use the system, the most appropriate recognition model is selected and used for the user.
