  • In this paper, we propose the fuzzy neural networks based on fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm. Typically, the generation of fuzzy rules have the problem that the number of fuzzy rules exponentially increases when the dimension increases. To solve this problem, the fuzzy rules of the proposed networks are generated by partitioning the input space in the scatter form using FCM clustering algorithm. The premise parameters of the fuzzy rules are determined by membership matrix by means of FCM clustering algorithm. The consequence part of the rules is expressed in the form of polynomial functions and the learning of fuzzy neural networks is realized by adjusting connections of the neurons, and it follows a back-propagation algorithm. The proposed networks are evaluated through the application to nonlinear process.

  • In the paper, a new design method of rule-based fuzzy modeling is proposed for model identification of nonlinear systems. The structure indentification is carried out, utilizing fuzzy c-means clustering. Fuzzy-neural networks composed back-propagation algorithm and linear fuzzy inference method, are used to identify parameters of the premise and consequence parts. To obtain optimal linguistic fuzzy implication rules, the learning rates and momentum coefficients are tuned automatically using a modified complex method.

  • Since upper and lower approximations could be induced from the rough set structures, rough sets are considered as approximations. The concept of fuzzy rough sets was proposed by replacing crisp binary relations with fuzzy relations by Dubois and Prade. In this paper, we introduce and investigate some properties of intuitionistic fuzzy rough approximation operators and intuitionistic fuzzy relations by means of topology.

  • In this paper, we introduce a modeling and a process simulator developed with the aid of pRBFNNs for activated sludge process in the sewage treatment system. Activated sludge process(ASP) of sewage treatment system facilities is a process that handles biological treatment reaction and is a very complex system with non-linear characteristics. In this paper, we carry out modeling by using essential ASP factors such as water effluent quality, the manipulated value of various pumps, and water inflow quality, and so on. Intelligent algorithms used for constructing process simulator are developed by considering multi-output polynomial radial basis function Neural Networks(pRBFNNs) as well as Fuzzy C-Means clustering and Particle Swarm Optimization. Here, the apexes of the antecedent gaussian functions of fuzzy rules are decided by C-means clustering algorithm and the apexes of the consequent part of fuzzy rules are learned by using back-propagation based on gradient decent method. Also, the parameters related to the fuzzy model are optimized by means of particle swarm optimization. The coefficients of the consequent polynomial of fuzzy rules and performance index are considered by the Least Square Estimation and Mean Squared Error. The descriptions of developed process simulator architecture and ensuing operation method are handled.

  • In this paper, we design an Fuzzy-Neural Networks(FNN) by means of divisions of fuzzy input space with multi-input variables. Fuzzy input space of Yamakawa's FNN is divided by each separated input variable, but that of the proposed FNN is divided by mutually combined input variables. The membership functions of the proposed FNN use both triangular and gaussian membership types. The parameters such as apexes of membership functions, learning rates, momentum coefficients, weighting value, and slope are adjusted using genetic algorithms. Also, an aggregate objective function(performance index) with weighting value is utilized to achieve a sound balance between approximation and generalization abilities of the model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we use the data of sewage treatment process.

  • In this paper, the use of conditional Fuzzy C-Means (CFCM) aimed at estimation of desired states of an unknown digital communication channel is investigated for blind channel equalization. In the proposed CFCM, a collection of clustered centers is treated as a set of pre-defined desired channel states, and used to extract channel output states. By considering the combinations of the extracted channel output states, all possible sets of desired channel states are constructed. The set of desired states characterized by the maximal value of the Bayesian fitness function is subsequently selected for the next fuzzy clustering epoch. This modification of CFCM makes it possible to search for the optimal desired channel states of an unknown channel. Finally, given the desired channel states, the Bayesian equalizer is implemented to reconstruct transmitted symbols. In a series of simulations, binary signals are generated at random with Gaussian noise, and both linear and nonlinear channels are evaluated. The experimental studies demonstrate that the performance (being expressed in terms of accuracy and speed) of the proposed CFCM is superior to the performance of the existing method exploiting the "conventional" Fuzzy C-Means (FCM).

  • A portable electronic tongue (E-Tongue) system using an array of ion-selective electrode (ISE) and personal digital assistants (PDA) for recognizing and analyzing food and drink have been designed. By the employment of PDA, the complex algorithm such as fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCMA) could be used in E-Tongue, PUMA could iteratively solve the cluster centers of pre-determined standard patterns. And the membership between the standard patterns and unknown pattern could be analyzed easily by the present E-Tongue combined with PDA.

  • Determination of the colorectal cancer stage is possible only after surgery based on pathology results. However, sometimes this may prove impossible. The aim of the present study was to determine colorectal cancer stage using three clustering methods based on preoperative clinical findings. All patients referred to the Colorectal Research Center of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences for colorectal cancer surgery during 2006 to 2014 were enrolled in the study. Accordingly, 117 cases participated. Three clustering algorithms were utilized including k-means, hierarchical and fuzzy c-means clustering methods. External validity measures such as sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were used for evaluation of the methods. The results revealed maximum accuracy and sensitivity values for the hierarchical and a maximum specificity value for the fuzzy c-means clustering methods. Furthermore, according to the internal validity measures for the present data set, the optimal number of clusters was two (silhouette coefficient) and the fuzzy c-means algorithm was more appropriate than the k-means clustering approach by increasing the number of clusters.

  • A fuzzy neural network model is presented to predict residual stress for dissimilar metal welding under various welding conditions. The fuzzy neural network model, which consists of a fuzzy inference system and a neuronal training system, is optimized by a hybrid learning method that combines a genetic algorithm to optimize the membership function parameters and a least squares method to solve the consequent parameters. The data of finite element analysis are divided into four data groups, which are split according to two end-section constraints and two prediction paths. Four fuzzy neural network models were therefore applied to the numerical data obtained from the finite element analysis for the two end-section constraints and the two prediction paths. The fuzzy neural network models were trained with the aid of a data set prepared for training (training data), optimized by means of an optimization data set and verified by means of a test data set that was different (independent) from the training data and the optimization data. The accuracy of fuzzy neural network models is known to be sufficiently accurate for use in an integrity evaluation by predicting the residual stress of dissimilar metal welding zones.

  • This study is purported for suggesting a new clustering algorithm that enables incremental categorization of numerous documents. The suggested algorithm adopts the natures of the spherical k-means algorithm, which clusters a mass amount of high-dimensional documents, and the fuzzy ART(adaptive resonance theory) neural network, which performs clustering incrementally. In short, the suggested algorithm is a combination of the spherical k-means vector space model and concept vector and fuzzy ART vigilance parameter. The new algorithm not only supports incremental clustering and automatically sets the appropriate number of clusters, but also solves the current problems of overfitting caused by outlier and noise. Additionally, concerning the objective function value, which measures the cluster's coherence that is used to evaluate the quality of produced clusters, tests on the CLASSIC3 data set showed that the newly suggested algorithm works better than the spherical k-means by 8.04% in average.
