Location information will become increasingly important for future Pervasive Computing applications. Location tracking system of a moving device can be classified into two types of architectures: an active mobile architecture and a passive mobile architecture. In the former, a mobile device actively transmits signals for estimating distances to listeners. In the latter, a mobile device listens signals from beacons passively. Although the passive architecture such as Cricket location system is inexpensive, easy to set up, and safe, it is less precise than the active one. In this paper, we present a passive location system using Cricket Mote sensors which use RF and ultrasonic signals to estimate distances. In order to improve accuracy of the passive system, the transmission speed of ultrasound was compensated according to air temperature at the moment. Upper and lower bounds of a distance estimation were set up through measuring minimum and maximum distances that ultrasonic signal can reach to. Distance estimations beyond the upper and the lower bounds were filtered off as errors in our scheme. With collecting distance estimation data at various locations and comparing each distance estimation with real distance respectively, we proposed an equation to compensate the deviation at each point. Equations for proposed algorithm were derived to calculate relative coordinates of a moving device. At indoor and outdoor tests, average location error and average location tracking period were 3.5 cm and 0.5 second, respectively, which outperformed Cricket location system of MIT.
Objectives : The objective of this study was to examine the acupoint location of Sameumgyo (SP6) from classic literatures. Methods : A review of SP6 acupoint location on 13 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion was performed. Results : Differences of SP6 acupoint location were found by classics of acupuncture and moxibustion. 9 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion said the acupoint of SP6 was located on 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus, however acupoint location of SP6 was described on 8 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus by 4 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion. Conclusions : Through a classic literature review, it was possible for the explanation that the location of SP6 was 8 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus, but it was not intended to overturn the theory of 3 cun above the tip of the medial malleoulus regarding location of SP6. This study may be the starting point for future experimental or clinical studies for exploring new acupoint, and is expected to follow up.
Purpose As mobile devices are in widespread use and location-based mobile advertising has grown rapidly in recent years, there exists a sharp increase among researchers as well as practitioners in the interest in the determinants of user's attitudes towards location-based Mobile advertising. The purpose of the research is to understand the predictors of attitudes towards location-based Mobile advertising and of the relationship between attitudes and behavioral intention. Design/methodology/approach To this end, we have conducted an online survey using 412 users who have the prior experience of viewing location-based advertising via their mobile devices. We excluded 31 invalid responses and performed an empirical analysis based on 381 responses. Findings The findings indicate that all the factors but 'perceived enjoyment' each have a significant, positive relationship with consumer attitudes towards location-based Mobile advertising. Furthermore, advertising attitude is positively associated with behavioral intention. We provide implications and future research directions based the research findings.
The proliferation of wireless local area networks (WLANs) offering high data rate in hot spot area have spurred the demand for possible WLANs and third-generation (3G) cellular network integration solutions as the initiative step towards 4G systems. This paper provides a novel architecture for seamless location-aware integration of WLANs into 3G cellular networks and also an analysis for the efficient handover techniques. We introduce location as a key context in secure roaming mechanism for context-aware interworking in 4G systems. The fast secure roaming with location-aware authentication is implemented at an entity called location-aware service (LAS) broker that utilizes the concepts of direction of user and pre-warming zone. The location-ware interworking architecture supports seamless roaming services among heterogeneous wireless networks including WLANs, wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs), and 3G cellular networks. This paper also includes a description of procedures needed to implement efficient mobility and location management. We show how the LAS broker with pre-warming and context transfer can obtain significant lower latency in the vertical handover.
A location-aware system, which is capable to detect a user's whereabout in a region and provide real-time location information in outdoor environment is designed and fabricated, specifically using the GPS (global positioning system) as key technology in view of its stability and high precision in outdoor environment. Experiment is conducted to test this application in campus-based environment. Once GPS receiver detects specific location which is tagged with GPS coordinates, the system provides information relevant to that context and user can operate and react accordingly. Besides, this location-aware system is able to provide user with the route in order to get to a desired place by detecting the direction that the user is moving towards from his/her initial location. The mapping data is transferred via wireless LAN to PDA carried by the user as well as to the back-end system on real-time basis. The test result is analyzed and discussed to validate the effectiveness of using GPS in implementing this system and indicates future works that could be made to improve this prototype to be implemented in other applications, such as theme park, tourist attraction spot or recreational park.
Location-sharing based service (LSBS) refers to a service that users share their location information with other users with whom friendship. At this time, the location information is shared through service provider, and then their position information is exposed to the service provider. The exposure of this personal position information to the service provider has raised a privacy problem, and thus privacy preserving mechanisms have been proposed to protect them. In this paper, we examine the types and features of the proposed location-sharing based services so far, and survey the research trend of privacy preserving mechanisms for them. Through the analysis on existing privacy preserving mechanisms, we present design factors for a privacy preserving mechanism for the current LSBS services, and suggest future work.
Mobility management is important in mobile cellular networks. In this study, we considered an enhanced location-based registration (ELR) method. In the ELR method, even when a mobile phone enters a cell to find that the cell is already on its list (of visited cells) and then updates its main counter, it does not remove any cells from the list (memory space permitting), which gives better performance than the location-based registration (LR) method. However, the location registration cost of the ELR method is still high, and there is a lot of room for improvement with regards to this matter. We now propose an improved version of the ELR method; namely, the improved ELR (iELR). In the iELR method, when a mobile phone enters a cell to find that the cell counter value is less than the main counter value, or when a mobile phone enters a cell to register its location, it updates the main counter and the cell counter values as much as possible to reduce the future need for registrations. We show that our proposed iELR method provides better performance than the ELR method.
Mobility management technology is one among the most important issues in future mobile communication systems. The mobility management technology includes location management and handoff technologies. In this paper, we present a hierarchical distributed dynamic location management scheme that is compatible with the IMT-2000 environment. The proposed scheme composes a cluster with location registers, then makes up a hierarchical structures consisting of clusters. Each layer in the hierarchical structure uses different location management strategies cooperating another layers with each other. Also, the proposed scheme uses location update algorithm considering the frequency of location queries from nodes outside the local cells. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme through an analytical model.

Predicting human mobility has always been an important task in Location-based Social Network. Previous efforts fail to capture spatial dependence effectively, mainly reflected in weakening the location topology information. In this paper, we propose a neural network-based method which can capture spatial-temporal dependence to predict the next location of a person. Specifically, we involve a graph convolutional network (GCN) based on a seq2seq framework to capture the location topology information and temporal dependence, respectively. The encoder of the seq2seq framework first generates the hidden state and cell state of the historical trajectories. The GCN is then used to generate graph embeddings of the location topology graph. Finally, we predict future trajectories by aggregated temporal dependence and graph embeddings in the decoder. For evaluation, we leverage two real-world datasets, Foursquare and Gowalla. The experimental results demonstrate that our model has a better performance than the compared models.
An important issue in the design of future Personal Communication Service (PCS) networks is the efficient management of location information. In this paper, we propose an adaptive distributed dynamic location management algorithm that stores the position of the mobile terminal in k of the n location information databases (LIDs). The proposed algorithm chooses adaptively k. replication factor according to both the space locality of LIDs in wireless mobile networks and the location query popularity to local mobile terminal from remote mobile terminals. The performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated by both an analytical model and a simulation. Based on the results of performance evaluation, we know that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of Krishnamurthi's algorithm regardless of call-mobility ratio.
