인지적 영역 중심의 뇌기반 진화적 접근법을 적용한 초등 과학 수업에서 학생들의 과학 창의성 분석 (Analyses of Elementary School Students' Scientific Creativity in Cognitive Domain by Applying a Brain-Based Evolutionary Approach to Science Instruction)

  • A brain-based evolutionary approach developed by reflecting the brain functions and authentic science is consisted of Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive domains, and within each domain the processes of Diversifying, Evaluating, and Furthering are proceeded (ABC-DEF). Two core components of creativity of originality and usefulness are inherent in each step. So, this study analyzed scientific creativity with the originality and usefulness components in cognitive domain, which is composed of diversifying the meanings inherent in the results of observations or experiments (C-D), evaluating the meanings (C-E), and furthering (C-F) in learning of 'World of Plants' unit which includes two topics of 'Plants on Land' and 'Plants in Water and Special Environment'. A total of 20 fourth grade students at Y elementary school in Gyeonggi province participated in the study. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the scientific creativity in step C-D (Diversifying stage) was assessed according to the scientific creativity assessment formula. The scores of scientific creativity were quite different with topics and showed different pattern in the originality and usefulness components. Second, when the students compare and evaluate the values of each meaning (C-E stage), they weighed more on usefulness than originality, such as "because it is useful" or "because it solve many everyday problems". Third, the overall scores of scientific creativity in step C-F (Furthering stage), as compared with those of step C-D, were low and showed decrease in the average scores of originality from 9.8 to 7.5 points, whereas increase in the average scores of usefulness from 5.4 to 6.1 points. In conclusion, these results showed that, even though the levels were not so high, the students, as scientists, can exhibit the scientific creativity in the processes of diversifying, comparing and evaluating, and applying the meanings about the results obtained by observations or experiments. The specific and various strategies to help students express their potential scientific creativity more effectively need to be developed.

  • Ever since the nonlinearity of machine tool dynamics was established, researchers attempted to make use of this fact to devise better monitoring, diagnostics and system, which were hitherto based on linear models. Theory of chaos, which explains many nonlinear phenomena comes handy for furthering the analysis using nonlinear model. In this study, measuring system will be constructed using multi-sensor (Tool Dynamometer, Acoustic Emission) in end millingprocess. Then, it will be verified that cutting force is low-dimensional deterministic chaos calculating Lyapunov exponents, Fractal dimension, Embedding dimension. Aen it will be investigated that the relations between characteristic parameter caculated form sensor signal and tool wear.

  • Railway has recently played an important role in preventing global warming caused by green house gases and furthering a low carbon green growth, The various railway research centers have conducted facilitated studies on saving energy. In particular, urban railway has emerged as the best means of public transportation in terms of punctuality, safety and environmentally friendliness. There are various ways to save energy in terms of operation of urban railway system, and they can be generally divided into hardware aspects that pertain to structure of vehicles and development of control system and software aspects that pertain to effective operation of trains based on operation patterns and diagram control. In this paper, we investigated drive assistance system for railway energy efficiency. The railway operation patterns and train diagram management programs were researched.

신경계 질환에서 철 관련 자기공명영상 기법의 활용 (Application of Iron Related Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Neurological Disorders)

  • Iron is an important element for brain oxygen transport, myelination, DNA synthesis and neurotransmission. However, excessive iron can generate reactive oxygen species and contribute neurotoxicity. Although brain iron deposition is the natural process with normal aging, excessive iron accumulation is also observed in various neurological disorders such as neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, Friedreich ataxia, and others. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) is a useful method for detecting iron deposits in the brain. It can be a powerful tool for diagnosis and monitoring, while furthering our understanding of the role of iron in the pathophysiology of a disease. In this review, we will introduce the mechanism of iron toxicity and the basics of several iron-related MRI techniques. Also, we will summarize the previous results concerning the clinical application of such MR imagings in various neurological disorders.

ASTRONOMY FROM THE HIGH ANTARCTIC PLATEAU

  • The Antarctic high plateau offers exceptional conditions for infrared and terahertz astronomy, as well as for programs requiring long, uninterrupted periods for measurements made with high cadence and photometric precision (i.e. time domain astronomy). In this review we summarise the special conditions of the Antarctic plateau which facilitate these observing regimes. We also outline some high profile science programs in each that could be conducted most effectively from the Antarctic high plateau, involving the first light in the Universe, the life cycle of our Galaxy, and the equation of state for the Universe. Three high plateau sites are under particular consideration for furthering such scientific programs{Dome A, Dome F and Ridge A. We summarise the activity underway at each site, which includes the building of new stations and the construction of facilities for optical, infrared and terahertz astronomy, as well as the plans for their future development.

Wide Sargasso Sea: An Elegy of Class Conflict in Jamaica

  • This paper is to scrutinize Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea through a Marxist criticism. While critics were industriously excavating discourses of feminism, post-colonialism, and racism in the novel, they tended to regard the Marxist attribute as supplementary material and to diminish the significance not considering as an independent subject to be examined. However, the novel, in which all the major relationships are based on capital, exemplifies class conflict between the bourgeois and the proletariat. Marx and Engels believe that the foundation of our society is capital and that society evolves through class conflict to obtain more capital, and thus they assert people's relations are the product of the commodification of individuals. Furthering their study, Louis Althusser specifies the power system through the (repressive) state apparatus and the ideological state apparatus. With the theories of the thinkers' above, this paper analyzes the relationship between Annette and Mason, Antoinette and her nameless husband, allegedly Rochester, Rochester and Amelie, and Rochester and Daniel Cosway. This paper offers an alternative reading of a classical feminist and post-colonial text.

뇌기반 진화적 과학 교수학습 모형의 개발 (Development of a Model of Brain-based Evolutionary Scientific Teaching for Learning)

  • 이 연구에서는 뇌기반 진화적 교육 원리를 도출하기 위하여, 인간 뇌의 구조적 기능적 특징, 개체간과 개체내에서 일어나는 생물학적 진화, 뇌내에서 일어나는 진화적 과정, 과학 자체와 개별 과학자의 과학적 활동에 내재된 진화적 속성에 관한 연구물을 리뷰하였다. 이렇게 하여 도출된 인간 뇌의 주요 특징과 생성-선택-파지를 핵심 요소로 하는 보편 다윈주의 혹은 보편 선택주의를 토대로, 뇌기반 진화적 과학 교수 학습 모형을 개발하였다. 이 모형은 세 가지 요소와 세 가지 단계 및 평가로 이루어진다. 세 가지 요소는 정의적, 행동적, 인지적 요소이고, 각 요소를 구성하는 세 단계는 다양화 $\rightarrow$ 비교 선택 $\rightarrow$ 확장 적용(ABC-DEF; Affective, Behavioral, Cognitive components - Diversifying$\rightarrow$Emulating, Estimating, Evaluating $\rightarrow$ Furthering steps)이다. 이 모형에서 정의적 요소 (A)는 인간 뇌에서 감성을 관장하는 대뇌변연계에 토대를 두고 자연 사물과 현상에 대한 학습자의 흥미 호기심과 관련된다. 행동적 요소(B)는 시각 정보를 처리하는 후두엽, 언어 정보의 이해.생성과 관련된 측두엽, 감각운동 정보를 처리하는 감각운동령을 수반하고 과학적 활동의 직접 해보기와 관련된다. 인지적 요소(C)는 사고, 계획, 판단, 문제해결과 관련된 전두엽합령에 토대를 둔다. 이 모형은 이러한 측면에서 '뇌기반(brain-based)'이다. 이 모형의 세 가지 각 요소를 구성하는 세 단계에서, 다양화 단계(D)는 각 요소에서 다양한 변이체를 생성하는 과정이고, 가치나 유용성에 비추어 비교.선택하는 단계(E)는 변이체들 중 유용하거나 가치 있는 것을 검증하여 선택하는 과정이며, 확장.적용 단계(F)는 선택된 것을 유사한 상황으로 확장하거나 적용하는 단계이다. 이 모형은 이러한 측면에서 '진화적(evolutionary)'이다. ABC 세 요소에 대해, 과학적 활동에서 감성적 요인이 출발점으로 갖는 중요성과 뇌에서 사고 기능과 관련되는 신피질에 비해 감성을 관장하는 대뇌변연계의 우세한 역할을 반영하여 DARWIN (Driving Affective Realm for Whole Intellectual Network) 접근법을 강조한다. 이 모형은 학교 현장에서 다루는 과학 주제와 학생의 특징에 따라 다양한 형태와 수준으로 융통성 있게 실행될 수 있다.

신문의 선거 보도행태와 사진이미지 활용 -5대 중앙일간지의 19대 총선보도를 중심으로- (Election Report Practices of Newspaper, Inclusive of the Utilization of Visual Images)

  • 신문의 선거 보도행태는 구조화되고 있다. 이러한 관행적 보도행태는 신문이 자신들의 이념과 동일한 정당의 선거 운동을 대리전 양상으로 치러내는 양태를 나타내고 있다. 신문의 19대 총선 보도에서도 경마식 보도, 게임 방식의 대결구도 조장, 정책 중심 선거 배제, 높은 비중의 해설기사, 부정적 이슈 중심 보도 등의 전형적인 보도관행은 그대로 유지되면서, 세대 간의 갈등이 부각되고 이슈 중심인물로 기사가 집중하는 현상이 새롭게 나타나고 있다. 사진이미지는 해설기사와 정치공방 기사에서 주로 활용되고 있으며, 사진이미지 활용은 이슈를 정서적인 측면에서 강화하고 있다. 그러나 기사 내용과는 다른 맥락의 사진을 게재하는 관행에 대해서는 문제의식이 필요하다.

Birth of an 'Asian cool' reference genome: AK1

  • The human reference genome, maintained by the Genome Reference Consortium, is conceivably the most complete genome assembly ever, since its first construction. It has continually been improved by incorporating corrections made to the previous assemblies, thanks to various technological advances. Many currently-ongoing population sequencing projects have been based on this reference genome, heightening hopes of the development of useful medical applications of genomic information, thanks to the recent maturation of high-throughput sequencing technologies. However, just one reference genome does not fit all the populations across the globe, because of the large diversity in genomic structures and technical limitations inherent to short read sequencing methods. The recent success in de novo construction of the highly contiguous Asian diploid genome AK1, by combining single molecule technologies with routine sequencing data without resorting to traditional clone-by-clone sequencing and physical mapping, reveals the nature of genomic structure variation by detecting thousands of novel structural variations and by finally filling in some of the prior gaps which had persistently remained in the current human reference genome. Now it is expected that the AK1 genome, soon to be paired with more upcoming de novo assembled genomes, will provide a chance to explore what it is really like to use ancestry-specific reference genomes instead of hg19/hg38 for population genomics. This is a major step towards the furthering of genetically-based precision medicine.
