  • Glasses showing the composition of blast furnace slag were made in the laboratory, and the effect of the chemical composition on the latent hydraulic activity of the slags was examined. The latent hydraulicity was greatly influenced by the composition change, the optimal characteristic of the hydraulicity was achieved at the slag composition of 47CaO:20Al2O3:33SiO2. The content of CaO and Al2O3 were not equivalent to the hydraulic activity of the slags as the b-formula (KS L 5210) indicates. Good latent hydraulicity was shown when Al2O3 was richly contained at the high (CaO+Al2O3):SiO ratio, while the more the MgO content was, the more negative the result turned out.

  • Thermoelectric properties of p-type SiGe alloys prepared by a RF inductive furnace were investigated. Non-doped Si80Ge20 alloys were fabricated by control of the quantity of volatile Ge. The carrier of p-type SiGe alloy was controlled by B-doping. B doped p-type SiGe alloys were synthesized by melting the mixture of Ge and Si containing B. The effects of sintering/annealing conditions and compaction pressure on thermoelectric properties (electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient) were investigated. For nondoped SiGe alloys, electrical conductivity increased with increasing temperatures and Seebeck coefficient was measured negative showing a typical n-type semiconductivity. On the other hand, B-doped SiGe alloys exhibited positive Seebeck coefficient and their electrical conductivity decreased with increasing temperatures. Thermoelectric properties were more sensitive to compaction pressure than annealing time. The highest power factor obtained in this work was 8.89${\times}$10-6J/cm$.$K2$.$s for 1 at% B-doped SiGe alloy.

  • Scintillation crystals for industrial field are used in fundamental physics i.e. nuclear and high energy physics experiments besides the medical imaging, process control and gauging, container inspection, mineral process etc. For the reason of limited marketability, there are not so many studies with emphasis paced on the crystal growth. The scintillation crystal is an important theme in the studies in the fundamental physics and researchers for crystal growth are expected participate it. The present work is partly supported by a Grant-in-Aid from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

  • It is important to produce the high-temperature and high-pressure air for the concentrated solar power system using the combined cycle. In this paper, we designed two types of tubular receivers to heat up the compressed air and provided their preliminary experimental results for performance evaluation and further improvements. The developed receivers are in a square cavity shape surrounded by flow conduits for easy scale-up and radiation loss reduction. The two receivers were tested with 5 bar air in the KIER solar furnace and evaluated in terms of the outlet temperature and the efficiency.

  • Three dimensional numerical analysis of the oxygen and air were performed to investigate the combustion characteristics in a Corner-type pulverized coal boiler. With the actual operation data of the power plant, the distribution of velocity, gas temperature, $O^2$, $CO_2$, $H_2O$, $N_2$ as well as the particle tracking in the boiler were investigated. The predicted values at the outlet of furnace for the gas temperature and major species concentrations gave a good agreement with the designed values. The present analysis on combustion characteristics in a boiler would provide the useful information for the stable boiler operation and in trouble shooting boiler problem.

  • This study is intended to investigate the influence of mineral admixtures on the autogenous and drying shrinkage of high performance concrete. According to results, drying shrinkage increases with increase of fly ash content, and it does not show difference with replacement of blast furnace slag powder. It increases when incorporating silica fume or fly ash and silica fume together. The autogenous shrinkage shows increasing tendency with increase of silica fume and blast furnace slag powder content, and incorporating of silica fume or fly ash and silica fume together has effects on reducing autogenous shrinkage. Therefore, it is considered that application of both silica fume and fly ash can reduce the cracks caused by autogenous shrinkage, including enhancement in strength and placeability of high performance concrete.

  • Ternary blended concrete containing both fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag is initial cost effective, and environment friendly. Furthermore, it has many technical advantages such as improvement of long term compressive strength, rheology property, reduction of hydration heat, etc. However, use and data on the performance of ternary blended concrete are limited, and it is necessary to study on the adoption of this technology. This study examined the durability performance of ternary blended concrete comparing with binary blended concrete and ordinary portland concrete. From the results of this study, it was concluded that ternary blended concrete is very suitable to submerged zone under maine environment.

  • This research was to investigate the invasion and diffusion properties of chloride ion on the concrete containing mineral admixtures by the electrically accelerated test. Mineral admixtures selected in mixes were fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, silica fume, and meta-kaolin with 3 degrees of replacement ratios. Tang and Nilsson's test method was used to estimate chloride diffusion coefficients of that mixes. As a result, the total current passing charge and the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion were reduced with the use of mineral admixtures and the increase of replacement ratios. In addition, compressive strength was related with diffusion coefficient of chloride ion. Diffusion coefficients of concrete mixed with ground granulated blast-furnace slag showed relatively low value under the range of compressive strength of 400㎏f/㎠.

  • As the result of uniaxial compression strength test on the CLMS mixing BFS and SS with BFS 4000, it required to determine the desired strength through increasing unit quantity of cement in mixing process because of dramatic strength deterioration of strength according to increasing replacing rate. In this study's result, regardless of differences in fine aggregates used, in order to get uniaxial compression strength in the scope exceeding criteria of minimum strength for applying to the field, the most reasonable combination was to mix replacing BFS with fineness of 6000 in 30%. For the CLMS mixing BFS and SS, in order to improve flow ability by securing quantity of minimum unit and to repress bleeding rate with securing uniaxial compress strength considering the field applicability, regardless of differences in fine aggregates used, to mix BFS over 6000 in 30% was most effective.
