  • In recent years, the need for optimal design of structures under time-history loading aroused great attention in researchers. The main problem in this field is the extremely high computational demand of time-history analyses, which may convert the solution algorithm to an illogical one. In this paper, a new framework is developed to solve the size optimization problem of steel truss structures subjected to ground motions. In order to solve this problem, the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy algorithm is employed for the optimization procedure, while a generalized regression neural network is utilized as a meta-model for fitness approximation. Moreover, the computational cost of time-history analysis is decreased through a wavelet analysis. Capability and efficiency of the proposed framework is investigated via two design examples, comprising of a tower truss and a footbridge truss.

  • This paper focuses on the fundamental issues for improving the efficiency and throughput of the AC PDP (Plasma Display Panel) manufacturing. The properties of the MgO protective layer affect the PDP efficiency. Especially, the secondary electron emission efficiency was affected on the deposition rate of MgO during the evaporation. In this study, the deposition rate of 5 $\AA$/s has given the maximum efficiency value of 0.05 It is demonstrated that the impurity gases such as $H_2O$, $CO_2$, CO or $N_2$, and $O_2$ can be remained inside the PDP panel before sealing and the amount of the impurity gases decreased rapidly as the base vacuum level increased, especially near $10^{-5}$ torr. The fundamental solution in order to overcome these problems is the vacuum in-line sealing process from the MgO evaporation to the final sealing of the panel without breaking the vacuum. We have demonstrated this fundamental process technology and shown the feasibility. The firing voltage was reduced down to 285 V at the base vacuum value of $10^{-6}$ torr, whreras it was about 328 V at the base vacuum value of $10^{-3}$ torr.

  • In recent years, along with the advances made in performance-based design optimization, the need for fast calculation of response parameters in dynamic analysis procedures has become an important issue. The main problem in this field is the extremely high computational demand of time-history analyses which may convert the solution algorithm to illogical ones. Two simplifying strategies have shown to be very effective in tackling this problem; first, simplified nonlinear modeling investigating minimum level of structural modeling sophistication, second, wavelet analysis of earthquake records decreasing the number of acceleration points involved in time-history loading. In this paper, we try to develop an efficient framework, using both strategies, to solve the performance-based multi-objective optimal design problem considering the initial cost and the seismic damage cost of steel moment-frame structures. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the Pareto optimal solutions. The constraints of the optimization problem are considered in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommended design specifications. The results from numerical application of the proposed framework demonstrate the capabilities of the framework in solving the present multi-objective optimization problem.

  • In this paper, a new meta-heuristic algorithm named Ranked Particles Optimization (RPO), is presented. This algorithm is not inspired from natural or physical phenomena. However, it is based on numerous researches in the field of meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. In this algorithm, like other meta-heuristic algorithms, optimization process starts with by producing a population of random solutions, Particles, located in the feasible search space. In the next step, cost functions corresponding to all random particles are evaluated and some of those having minimum cost functions are stored. These particles are ranked and their weighted average is calculated and named Ranked Center. New solutions are produced by moving each particle along its previous motion, the ranked center, and the best particle found thus far. The robustness of this algorithm is verified by solving some mathematical and structural optimization problems. Simplicity of implementation and reaching to desired solution are two main characteristics of this algorithm.

  • This is the second part of the paper (Rojek and Kleiber 1993) devoted to nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures consisting of rigid and deformable parts. The first part contains a theoretical formulation of nonlinear equations of motion for the coupled system as well as a solution algorithm. The second part presents the computer implementation of the equations derived in the first part with a short review of the capabilities of the computer program used and the library of finite elements. Details of material nonlinearity treatment are also given. The paper is illustrated by discussing a practical problem of a safety cab analysis for an agricultural tractor.

  • Some structures under the action of some specific loads can be treated as consisting of rigid and deformable parts. The paper presents a way to include rigid elements into a finite element model accounting for geometrical and material nonlinearities. Lagrange multipliers technique is used to derive equations of motion for the coupled deformable-rigid system. Solution algorithm based on the elimination of the Lagrangian multipliers and dependent kinematic unknowns at the element level is described. A follow-up paper(Rojek and Kleiber 1993) complements the discussion by giving details of the computer implementation and presenting some realistic test examples.

  • In this paper, the recently developed meta-heuristic algorithm called tug of war optimization is applied to optimal design of castellated beams. Two common types of laterally supported castellated beams are considered as design problems: beams with hexagonal openings and beams with circular openings. Here, castellated beams have been studied for two cases: beams without filled holes and beams with end-filled holes. Also, tug of war optimization algorithm is utilized for obtaining the solution of these design problems. For this purpose, the minimum cost is taken as the objective function, and some benchmark problems are solved from literature.

  • This study was conducted to develop the simple and convenient irrigation control model which can maintain the appropriate rates of irrigation and drainage of nutrient solution according to the environmental conditions and growth stages in soilless culture of cucumber. In order to obtain fundamental data for development of the model, investigation of the actual state of soilless culture practices was carried out. Most irrigation systems of soilless culture were controlled by the time clock. Evapotranspiration of cucumber in soilless culture was investigated and correlations with environmental conditions were analyzed, and its prediction model was developed. A irrigation control model based on the time clock control and there were considered seasons, weather conditions, and growth stages was developed. Applicability of the model was tested by simulation. Drainage rates of irrigation system controlled by conventional time clock, integrated solar radiation, and the developed model were 61%, 20%, and 32%, respectively in cucumber perlite culture.

  • In TV sound system, loudspeakers are subject to severe size constraints. The small size of the transducer affects the low frequency signal performance of the system. Bass signal performance contributes significantly to the user perceived sound quality and a good bass signal reproduction is essential. Increasing the sound energy in the bass signal range is an unviable solution since the gain required are exceedingly high and signal distortion occurs because of the speaker overload. Recently methods are being proposed to invoke low frequency illusion using psychoacoustic phenomena of the missing fundamental. This paper proposes a simple and effective signal processing method to create bass signal illusion in TV speakers using the missing fundamental effect, at a complexity of 12 MIPS on Motorola 56371 audio DSP.

  • In this paper, a third-order harmonic mixer is designed using frequency multiplier theory for the Ka-band. The gate bias voltage is selected by frequency multiplier theory to maximize the third-order harmonic element ofthe fundamental LO frequency in the proposed mixer. The designed mixer has a gate mixer structure composed of a gate terminal input for the fundamental local signal ($f_{LO}$), RF signal (${RF}$) and a drain terminal output for the harmonic frequency ($3f_{LO}-f_{RF}$) respectively. The Ka-band harmonic mixer is designed and fabricated using a commercial GaAs MESFET device with a plastic package. The proposed mixer will provide a solution for the problems found in the high cost, complex circuitry in a conventional Ka-band mixer. The 33.5 GHz harmonic mixer has a -10 dB conversion gain by pumping 11.5 GHz LO with a +5 dBm level.
