Concept Structures, Functional Equivalence and the East Asian Welfare State Discussion: An Application of Set Theory in Comparative Social Policy (개념구조, 기능적 등가물 그리고 동아시아복지국가론: 비교사회정책연구에서 집합이론의 활용)

  • After the introduction of the three welfare regimes by Esping-Andersen, discussion on 'other' types of welfare regimes was facilitated and the scholarly focus on East Asian economic development gradually shifted to the East Asian welfare states discussion from the late 1990s. Literature on East Asian welfare states increased our understanding on the characteristics of not only the East Asian welfare state as a whole but also of each country in the region. However, compared the attention given to developing variables and empirical studies on the East Asian welfare state, less attention has been given to the concept of East Asian welfare states. Recognizing the limitation in developing comparable variables without a concept analysis of the East Asian welfare states, this study highlights the importance of conceptualization and concept analysis in comparative social policy studies. This paper first discusses on the concepts, conceptualization and on the use of set theory in comparative social policy research. Next, the study argues the validity of 'functional equivalence' in the East Asian welfare state studies and critically reviews the existing literature. Lastly, this paper suggests how the concept of functional equivalence can be successfully employed for the East Asian welfare states studies with a concept analysis and by applying a set theory including the fuzzy set theory.

Distribution of Weeds with Different Surface Management Systems of Greenhouse Soil in Gyeongnam Province (경남지역 시설원예작물 재배지 및 표토관리별 잡초발생 양상)

  • Weed control is of fundamental importance when planting horticultural crops, particularly during the establishment phase. Weeds compete for nutrients, water and light, and can severely threaten the survival and early growth of newly planted crops. Failure to control weeds represents one of the single most important factors leading to crop loss. Knowledge on the existence of the diversity of weed species in greenhouses is of our main concern in this study in order to develop a most efficient and effective weed control strategies. Sixty-two greenhouses were surveyed in 3 cities and counties of Gyeongnam area in March to October 2009 to investigate the feature of weed occurrence in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) after harvesting of the main crops. Forty-one weed species were identified and classified to 18 families which were composed of 14 annual weeds, 18 summer annual weeds and 9 perennial weeds. On the other hand, broadleaf, grasses and sedges recorded with 30, 7 and 4 weed species, respectively. Asteraceae was the most dominant weed species (9 species) noted followed by Poaceae (7 species), Cyperaceae (4 species), Caryophyllaceae and Brassicaceae (3 species respectively) and other families have 1~2 species. The dominant weed species occurred in the greenhouse based on the summed dominance ratio. These weeds were Digitaria sanguinalis, Cyperus iria, Portulaca oleracea, Rorippa islandica, Mazus japonicas, Cardamine flexousa, and Eclipta prostrata and others. Weed occurrence in the greenhouse after horticultural crops consisted of summer annuals (4 species), winter annuals (3 species), and perennial annuals (1 specie). The dominant species occurred in tilled soil based on summed dominance ratio of weeds were Cardamine flexousa (88.1%), Eclipta prostrate (57.4%) and Portulaca oleracea (55.2%). Comparison of weed occurrence was thoroughly surveyed also in which field without PVC, weed species were Portulaca oleracea (55.2), Eclipta prostrata (57.9%) and Trigonotis peduncularis (25.1%) and field with PVC, the identified weeds were Portulaca oleracea (98.75), Trigonotis peduncularis (49.1%), and Eclipta prostrata (36.8%).

  • In the work of contemporary spatialization, the meaning of program is being an important conceptual element beyond simple functional dimension. The design of this diagram allows to balance among changing programs, and it comes into the spotlight as a medium, which links the virtual to the reality as embodying the virtual, which is not embodied realistically, realistically through the design process. In other words, this method is attracting the public attention as a design tool which can concentrate on design process rather than a fixed tool. This study focuses on the role of balancing among mixed programs and the diagram as a design tool. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze and research the work of spatialization, which apply to diagrams of contemporary designers, is to identify operating mechanism and then is to examine the characteristics and importance of them.

  • The fundamental principles and the role of surgeons and orthodontists to produce successful results in orthodontic treatment combined with orthognathic surgery is not different from those of conventional procedures and FOS: surgery-first-orthodontic-treatment-later approach. The communication and cooperation between surgeon and orthodontist is of crucial importance. In FOS, the pre-surgical orthodontic preparation is not carried out in the patient's mouth, but in the mounted stone model and in addition to the simulation of tooth movement, to get a precise surgical occlusion, the entire steps of treatment should be simulated on the articulator as well. Right after the surgery, due to the instability of the occlusion, appropriate post operational care should be given according to the surgical technique applied to the mandible by use of final surgical wafer about 8 weeks.

  • In this study, we attempted to understand signaling pathways behind lipid biosynthesis by employing a chemical genetics approach based on small molecule inhibitors. Specific signaling inhibitors of MAP kinase or modulators of cAMP signaling were selected to evaluate the functional roles of each of the key signaling pathways in three different microalgal species: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella vulgaris, and Haematococcus pluvialis. Our results clearly indicate that cAMP signaling pathways are indeed positively associated with microalgal lipid biosynthesis. In contrast, MAP kinase pathways in three microalgal species are all negatively implicated in both lipid and carotenoid biosynthesis.

  • E-learning has increased on importance as people realize that the use of technology can improve the teaming process. Consequently, new learning environments have been developed. However, in general they are oriented to address a specific e-learning functionality. Therefore, in most of the cases, they are not developed to interoperate with other e-learning tools, which makes the creation of a fully functional e-learning environment more difficult. The Effect of Induced Multipoles on the Fifth-order Raman Response

  • In our previous work we developed the Finite Field method in order to calculate the fifth-order Raman response. The method was applied to calculate various polarization components of the two-dimensional response of liquid $CS_2$. So far, all calculations relied on the dipole-induced dipole. Accurate time-dependent density functional theory calculations have shown that this model has big discrepancies, when molecules are close together as in the liquid. We now report results of investigations on the importance of multipole and electron overlap effects on the polarizability and the fifth-order Raman response. It is shown that these collision effects, especially the induced multipoles, are crucial in the description of the fifth-order response. The impact is found to be especially pronounced for the χ_{mmzzzz}^{(5)}$response that is solely due to interaction induced effects. The calculated response will be compared with various experimental results.

  • Diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic derangement with hyperglycaemia being the most characteristic symptom of diabetes. Hyperglycaemia can be caused by an increase in the rate of glucose production by the liver or by a decrease in the rate of glucose use by peripheral tissues. Impaired glucose transport is one of the major factors contributing to insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic patients. The ability of insulin to mediate tissue glucose uptake is a critical step in maintaining glucose homeostasis and in clearing the post-prandial glucose load. Glucose transport is mediated by specific carriers called glucose transporters (GLUTs). In this article, the functional importance and molecular mechanisms of insulin-induced glucose transport and development of hypoglycaemic agents which increase glucose transport are reviewed.

A study on management and judgement of defect-repair in private housing construction company (민간 주택건설회사의 하자보수에 대한 인식 및 실태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a defect-repair management and judgement of apartment housing for the private housing construction company. The objectives are : 1) to investigate how the defect-repair were managed and 2) to suggest the range, period of defect-repair and the proper managial size of housing company. Data were collected by the interviews from the heads of management departments of housing construction companies. Twenty-one companies selected were divided into three groups according to the amount of housing supply. Major result were as follows : 1) departments of defect-repair in housing construction company are divided into sub-system according to the size of housing supply. 2) the judgement of the range and period of defect-repair are extracted. They are, according to the order of their importance, constructional defect, functional defect, aesthetical defect and the defect in use.

  • Thoracic kyphosis is occasionally used to describe someone with accentuated thoracic curvature, hyperkyphosis is preferred since kyphosis itself refers to the normal sagittal angle of thoracic curvature. The angle of thoracic kyphosis tends to increase with age resulting in hyperkyphosis in some individuals. The persons who suffer from hyperkyphosis are at increased risk for a variety of adverse health outcomes that include musculoskeletal alteration, physical functional limitations, poor quality of life, falls, and even earlier mortality. Hyperkyphosis may develop from vertebral fractures, degenerative disc disease, either muscle weakness, decreased mobility and sensory deficits. The gold-standard orthopaedic technique for assessment of thoracic kyphosis is standing lateral spine radiographs. Other clinical measures are Debrunner kyphometer, inclinometer, flexicurve ruler, arcometer, flexible electrogoniometer and spinal mouse.
