  • In this paper, the seismic analysis modeling technologies for sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) are presented with detailed descriptions for each structure, system and component (SSC) model. The complicated reactor system of pool type SFR, which is composed of the reactor vessel, internal structures, intermediate heat exchangers, primary pumps, core assemblies, and core support structures, is mathematically described with simple stick models which can represent fundamental frequencies of SSC. To do this, detailed finite element analyses were carried out to identify fundamental beam frequencies with consideration of fluid added mass effects caused by primary sodium coolant contained in the reactor vessel. The calculation of fluid added masses is performed by detailed finite element analyses using FAMD computer program and the results are discussed in terms of the ways to be considered in a seismic modeling. Based on the results of seismic time history analyses for both seismic isolation and non-isolation design, the functional requirements for relative deflections are discussed, and the design floor response spectra are proposed that can be used for subsystem seismic design.

  • This article deals the theory for solving an inverse problem of plate structures using the frequency-domain information instead of classical time-domain delays or free vibration eigenmodes or eigenvalues. A reduced set of output parameters characterizing the defect is used as a regularization technique to drastically overcome noise problems that appear in imaging techniques. A deconvolution scheme from an undamaged specimen overrides uncertainties about the input signal and other coherent noises. This approach provides the advantage that it is not necessary to visually identify the portion of the signal that contains the information about the defect. The theoretical model for Quantitative nondestructive evaluation, the relationship between the real and ideal models, the finite element method (FEM) for the forward problem, and inverse procedure for detecting the defects are developed. The theoretical formulation is experimentally verified using dynamic responses of a steel plate under impact loading at several points. The signal synthesized by FEM, the residual, and its components are analyzed for different choices of time window. The noise effects are taken into account in the inversion strategy by designing a filter for the cost functional to be minimized. The technique is focused toward a exible and rapid inspection of large areas, by recovering the position of the defect by means of a single accelerometer, overriding experimental calibration, and using a reduced number of impact events.

  • In this study, free vibration and damping behaviors of multilayered symmetric sandwich beams and single layered beams made of Functionally Graded Materials were investigated, experimentally and numerically. The beams were composed of Aluminum and Silicon Carbide powders and they were produced by powder metallurgy. Three beam models were used in the experiments. The first model was isotropic, homogeneous beams produced by using different mixing ratios. In the second model, the pure metal layers were taken in the middle of the beam and the weight fraction of the ceramic powder of each layer was increased towards to the surfaces of the beam in the thickness direction. In the third model, the pure metal layers were taken in the surfaces of the beam and the weight fraction of the ceramic powder of each layer was increased towards to middle of the beam. Then the vibration tests were performed. Consequently, the effects of stacking sequence and mixing ratio on the natural frequencies and damping responses of functionally graded beams were discussed from the results obtained. Furthermore, the results obtained from the tests were supported with a finite-element-based commercial program, and it was found to be in harmony.

  • An efficient boundary-based technique is developed for addressing shape design sensitivity analysis in various problems. An analytical sensitivity formula in the form of a boundary integral is derived based on the continuum formulation for a general functional defined in problems. The formula, which is expressed in terms of the boundary solutions and shape variation vectors, can be conveniently used for gradient computation in a variety of shape design problems. While the sensitivity can be calculated independent of the analysis means, such as the finite element method (FEM) or the boundary element method (BEM), the FEM is used for the analysis in this study because of its popularity and easy-to-use features. The advantage of using a boundary-based method is that the shape variation vectors are needed only on the boundary, not over the whole domain. The boundary shape variation vectors are conveniently computed by using finite perturbations of the shape geometry instead of complex analytical differentiation of the geometry functions. The supercavitating flow problem and fillet problem are chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology. Implementation issues for the sensitivity analysis and optimization procedure are also addressed in these problems.

  • Electroactive polymers have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their sensing and actuating properties which make them a material of choice for a wide range of applications including sensors, biomimetic robots, and biomedical micro devices. This paper presents an effective modeling strategy for nonlinear large deformation (small strains and moderate rotations) dynamic analysis of polymer actuators. Considering that the complicated electro-chemo-mechanical dynamics of these actuators is a drawback for their application in functional devices, establishing a mathematical model which can effectively predict the actuator's dynamic behavior can be of paramount importance. To effectively predict the actuator's dynamic behavior, a comprehensive mathematical model is proposed correlating the input voltage and the output bending displacement of polymer actuators. The proposed model, which is based on the rigid finite element (RFE) method, consists of two parts, namely electrical and mechanical models. The former is comprised of a ladder network of discrete resistive-capacitive components similar to the network used to model transmission lines, while the latter describes the actuator as a system of rigid links connected by spring-damping elements (sdes). Both electrical and mechanical components are validated through experimental results.

  • It is main objective of this approach to present a method to analyse stochastic design sensitivity for problems of structural dynamics with randomness in design parameters. A combination of the adjoint variable approach and the second oder perturbation method is used in the finite element approach. An alternative form of the constant functional that holds for all times is introduced to consider the time response of dynamic sensitivity. The terminal problem of the adjoint system is solved using equivalent homogeneous equations excited by initial velocities. The numerical procedures are shown to be much more efficient when based on the fold superposition method : the generalized co-ordinates are normalized and the correlated random variables are transformed to uncorrelated variables, where as the secularities are eliminated by the fast Fourier transform of complex valued sequences. Numerical algorithms have been worked out and proved to be accurate and efficient : they codes whose element derivative matrices can be explicitly generated. The numerical results of two cases - 2-dimensional portal frame and 3/4-cylindrical shell structure - for the deterministic and stochastic sensitivity analysis illustrates in this paper.

  • This paper presents the development process of automotive side door impact beam for passenger cars. Weight reduction while maintaining functional requirements is one of the major goals in the automotive industry. In this study, thin-walled side door beam using quenchable boron steel was designed to reduce the weight of conventional side door tubular one. In order to estimate design for the proposed side door beams, the static side impact protection tests(FMVSS 214) were conducted using the finite element method. Based on the simulation results, geometry modification of the side door beam has been performed via creating new reinforcing ribs. Furthermore, the manufactured frontal impact beam was mounted on the real side door of a passenger car, and then static impact protection test carried out. It is concluded that the presented test results can provide significant contribution to the stiffness of side door impact beams and light-weighting door research.

  • This study was designed to investigate the mechanical properties of the coating layer on electronic galvanized sheet steel as a part of the ongoing research on the coated steel. Those properties were determined using nano-indentation, the finite element method, and artificial neural networks. First and foremost, the load-displacement curve (the loading-unloading curve) of coatings was derived from a nano-indentation test by CSM (continuous stiffness measurement) and was used to measure the elastic modulus and hardness of the coating layer. The properties derived were applied in FE simulations of a nano-indentation test, and the analytical results were compared with the experimental result. A numerical model for FE simulations was established for the coating layer and the substrate separately. Finally, to determine the mechanical properties of the coating, such as the stress-strain curve, functional equations of loading and unloading curves were introduced and computed using the neural networks method. The results show errors within $5\%$ in comparison with the load-displacement measured by a nano-indentation test.

  • The endodontically treated tooth is generally restored with post and core, owing to the brittleness and the loss of large amount of tooth structure. Although there have been lots of studies about the endodontically treated teeth, the three-dimensional quantitative studies about the stress distribution of them are in rare cases. In this study, it was assumed that the coronal portion of the upper incisor had extensively damaged. After the root canal therapy it was post cored, and restored with PFG crown. The three-dimensional model, in which the root was supported with a normal alveolar bone, was constructed. Force was applied to the centric stop point with the angle of 135 degrees to the long axis of the tooth. Force was assumed to be 250N as functional maximum bite force of upper central incisors. The results analyzed with three-dimensional finite element method were as follows : 1. Stress was concentrated on the middle portion of the labial side dentin and the apical portion of the dentin. 2. Stress in the post was more concentrated on the post apex. 3. The displacement of the post at the post-cement interface was almost symmetrical la-bio-lingually. 4. It assumed that restoring extensively damaged tooth with a post-core and PFG crown is an adequate method of restoration.
