GFRP based composite rotor blades were developed for 750 kW & 2 MW wind turbines. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar and shear web structure. For verifying the structural safety under all relevant extreme loads specified in the GL guidelines, the structural analysis of the rotor blades was performed using commercial FEM codes. The static load carrying capacity, blade tip deflections and natural frequencies were evaluated to satisfy the strength and stability requirements. Full-scale proof tests of rotor blades were carried out with optical fiber sensors for real-time condition monitoring. Finally, the prototype of each rotor blade passed all proof tests for GL certification.

This paper presents the development of a high efficiency transport refrigeration system for sliced-raw fish transportation. The refrigeration system is equipped with heat storage for reverse cycle-hot gas defrost (the stored heat is used during defrost cycle of the system). System performance and container operating conditions are analyzed during experimental investigation on a $3,225{\times}1,740{\times}1,640\;mm$ full-scale refrigerated container under cooling and defrosting conditions. The prototype system indicates better performance in terms of shorter cooling-down time, shorter defrost time and smaller fluctuations of refrigerated container's temperature.
This study simulated a control rod assembly (CRA), which is a part of reactor shutdown systems, in immersed and fluid flow conditions. The CRA was inserted into the reactor core within a predetermined time limit under normal and abnormal operating conditions, and the CRA (which consists of complex geometric shapes) drop behavior is numerically modeled for simulation. A full-scale prototype CRA drop test is established under room temperature and water-fluid conditions for verification and validation. This paper describes the details of the numerical modeling and analysis results of the several conditions. Results from the developed numerical simulation code are compared with the test results to verify the numerical model and developed computer code. The developed code is in very good agreement with the test results and this numerical analysis model and method may replace the experimental and CFD method to predict the drop behavior of CRA.

In recent years, use of the web technologies and on-line process has immensely swapped single-user platform practice. This study attempted to develop preliminary cost estimating program by means of Web technologies based on statistical modeling results. A prototype Web-based Preliminary Item-Level Cost Estimating System (WBPILCES) using open source software was developed as an on-line estimating tool in this research. The primary objective is to study the possible flexibility of implementing a centralized information system that will be maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) IT division. The full-scale deployment of proposed information architecture is expected to seamlessly integrate with legacy database system currently used by TxDOT so as to streamline data storage, cost growth tracking and estimates documentation.
Optimization scheme is presented for the design of precast prestressed double-tee beams used as slabs in the parking or market structures. The objective considered is defined by a function that minimizes the hight of the double-tee beam, including the prefabricated element and the concrete topping poured in a second phase. The Sequential Quadratic Programming method is adopted to solve the problem. As an example 12 double-tee beams are designed with the design loads of the current design code of our country. The results from optimization process show that at least 29cm less in overall height than that designed by PCI design handbook. The section determined from the optimization process was refined for practical considerations. A MathCad 7.0 Pro Spreadsheet was prepared to verify all ACI requirements for flexure, shear and deflections. Flexural tests are performed on four full-scale 12.5m prototype models and show that all the specimens are fully comply the flexural strength requirements as specified by ACI 318-95. The present optimization scheme can be used for wider application of the design of precast prestressed double-tee beams with different materials and configurations particularly for in a large scale or for important designs.

The study is aimed at investigating the feasibility of a high TRL solution for a wing flap segment characterized by morphable camber airfoil and properly tailored to be implemented on a real-scale regional transportation aircraft. On the base of specific aerodynamic requirements in terms of target airfoil shapes and related external loads, the structural layout of the device was preliminarily defined. Advanced FE analyses were then carried out in order to properly size the load-carrying structure and the embedded actuation system. A full scale limited span prototype was finally manufactured and tested to: ${\bullet}$ demonstrate the morphing capability of the conceived structural layout; ${\bullet}$ demonstrate the capability of the morphing structure to withstand static loads representative of the limit aerodynamic pressures expected in service; ${\bullet}$ characterize the dynamic behavior of the morphing structure through the identification of the most significant normal modes. Obtained results showed high correlation levels with respect to numerical expectations thus proving the compliance of the device with the design requirements as well as the goodness of modeling approaches implemented during the design phase.
Small-scale models of reinforced concrete beam-column joints and anchorage-bond specimens were subjected to large cyclic displacements at two rates. To assess damage, free vibration tests were conducted. The reliability of the modeling techniques was established by comparison of the results for the slower rate with those obtained from the full-scale tests on prototype. The higher rate of loading caused a greater damage than that at the slower rate. This was evidenced by the measurements of the stiffness obtained from the free-vibration test. The relatively greater extent of damage appears to result from the different bond behavior at different rates of loading.
This study illustrates a prototype proposal and its evaluation for the development of floor plans in the condominium housing remodeling. For this I evaluated the survey of the residents of the 'K' town in Joonge-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul, against the proposal which was developed based on the resident's pre-survey. The result includes that the residents' preference for community actions such as the removal of fences which are reviewed as negative, whereas the introduction of a fitness center and community facilities in the library are reviewed as positive. The residents preferred the open space by the piloti structure, although which is the wall column structure, where they anticipated a rest area, sports facilities, and bicycle drop-off spots. The sidewall proposal in the main building and the full use of the roof floor were underestimated in terms of design concept. The research also illustrated the residents' desired space planning options, those tending to use of space 'B type', personalization 'C type' and spatial size 'A type'. Residents responded positively to the introduction of the 'Alpha' space in which two households share one space that could be used for multiple purposes such as a rest area, an environment-friendly garden, and hobby room, etc, and also there is another possibility it plays an important role to the sociality in community.

This paper describes an optimal configuration for multi-central inverters in a medium-voltage (MV) grid, which is suitable for large-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plants. We theoretically analyze a proposed common-mode equivalent model for problems associated with multi-central transformerless-type three-phase full bridge(3-FB) PV inverters employing two-winding MV transformers. We propose a synchronized PWM control strategy to effectively reduce the common-mode voltages that may simultaneously occur. In addition, we propose that the existing 3-FB topology may also have the configuration of a multi-central inverter with a two-winding MV transformer by making a simple circuit modification. Simulation and experimental results of three 350kW PV inverters in a multi-central configuration verify the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization control strategy. The modified transformerless-type 3-FB topology for a multi-central PV inverter configuration is verified using an experimental prototype of a 100kW PV inverter.
