A comparison between sea trial measurements and full-scale CFD results is presented for two self-propelled ships. Two ships considered in the present study are: a general cargo carrier at Froude number $F_n=0:182$ and a car carrier at $F_n=0:254$. For the general cargo carrier, the propeller rotation rate is fixed and the achieved speed and trim are compared to sea trials, while for the car carrier, the propeller rotation rate is adjusted to achieve the 80% MCR. In addition, three grids are used for each ship in order to assess the grid refinement sensitivity. All simulations are performed using the Naval Hydro pack based on foam-extend, a community driven fork of the OpenFOAM software. The results demonstrate the possibility of using high-fidelity numerical methods to directly calculate ship scale flow characteristics, including the effects of free surface, non-linearity, turbulence and the interaction between propeller, hull and the flow field.

A full-scale field trial in ice-covered sea is one of the most important tasks in the design of icebreaking ships. The first Korean icebreaking research vessel 'ARAON', after her delivery in late 2009, had a sea ice field trial in the Arctic Sea during July-August, 2010. This paper describes the test procedures and data analysis on the icebreaking performance of the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from the icebreaking performance test in the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea during the Arctic voyage of ARAON includes the speed and engine power of the ship as well as sea ice thickness and strength data. The air temperature, wind speed and heading of the ship were also measured during each sea ice trial. The ARAON was designed to break 1 m thick level ice with a flexural strength of 630kPa at a continuous speed of 3knots. She is registered as a KR POLAR 10 class ship. The principal dimensions of ARAON are 110 m, 19 m and 6.8 m in length, breadth and draft respectively. She is equipped with four 3,500kW diesel-electric main engines and two Azipod type propulsion motors. Four sea ice trials were carried out to understand the relationship between the engine power and the ship speed, given the Arctic ice condition. The analysis shows that the ARAON was able to operate at 1.5knots in a 2.5m thick medium ice floe condition with the engine power of 5MW, and the speed reached 3.1 knots at the same ice floe condition when the power increased to 6.6MW. She showed a good performance of speed in medium ice floe compared to the speed performance in level ice. More detailed analysis is summarized in this paper.
This paper presents the results of stability analyses on soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls in a tiered arrangement. Four different walls were examined to investigate the appropriateness of their designs within the context of the current design guidelines based on limit equilibrium. Slope stability analysis against the compound failure mode, which is frequently ignored during design, was also performed based on the method recommended by FHWA design guidelines. Also presented are the results of instrumentation on a full-scale field trial wall constructed as part of this study. The implications of the findings from this study are discussed.

In order to determine the amount of explosives that can minimize the vibration generated during tunnel construction using the blasting method, it is necessary to derive the blasting vibration coefficients, K and n, by analyzing the vibration records of trial blasting in the field or under similar conditions. In this study, we aimed to develop a technique that can derive reasonable K and n when trial blasting cannot be performed. To this end, we collected full-scale trial blast data and studied how to predict the blast vibration coefficient (K, n) according to the type of explosive, center cut blasting method, rock origin and type, and rock grade using deep learning (DL). In addition, the correction value between full-scale and borehole trial blasting results was calculated to compensate for the limitations of the borehole trial blasting results and to carry out a design that aligns more closely with reality. In this study, when comparing the available explosive amount according to the borehole trial blasting result equation, the predictions from deep learning (DL) exceed 50%, and the result with the correction value is similar to other blast vibration estimation equations or about 20% more, enabling more economical design.
Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called 'railway turnout'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction complexities may dominate the choice of track forms or certain components. With the difficulty to seek for high-quality timbers with dimensional stability, a methodology to replace aged timber bearers in harsh dynamic environments is to adopt an alternative material that could mimic responses and characteristics of timber in both static and dynamic loading conditions. A critical review has suggested an application of an alternative material called fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU). The full-scale capacity design makes use of its comparable engineering characteristics to timber, high-impact attenuation, high damping property, and a longer service life. A field trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, 'fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)' bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle 'AK Car'), track settlement (based on survey data), track dynamics, and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. Comparative studies show that the use of FFU bearers generates higher rail and sleeper accelerations but the damping capacity of the FFU help suppress vibration transferring onto other track components. The survey data analysis suggests a small vertical settlement and negligible lateral movement of the turnout system. The static and dynamic behaviours of FFU bearers appear to equate that of natural timber but its service life is superior.
The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics on the profile of local ice load acting on side shell of port side in bow part due to broken ice during icebreaking of ships in ice covered waters. The first Korean icebreaking research vessel 'ARAON' had a sea ice field trial in the Arctic Sea during early August, 2010, and the signals due to local ice impact measured from several strain gauges installed at bow part were gathered. It is known that these data with structural response characteristics due to local ice impact have some different characteristics with a typical hydraulic impact pressure - time history. In this study, the time history on the measured signals was analyzed and the characteristic values were presented using non-dimensional parameters.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical properties of recycled asphalt mixtures reinforced with glass fiber. METHODS : Firstly, mixing design was conducted on recycled asphalt mixture for use of 50% recycled aggregate. Various laboratory tests were performed on four types of recycled asphalt mixtures with different glass fiber content to evaluate the physical properties. The laboratory tests include indirect tensile strength test, dynamic modulus test, Hamburg wheel tracking test and tensile-strength ratio to evaluate cracks, rutting and moisture resistance of mixtures. RESULTS : The indirect tensile strength of fiber reinforced glass increased about 139.4%. As a result of comparing the master curves obtained by the dynamic modulus test, the elasticity was low in the low temperature region and high in the high temperature region when the glass fiber was reinforced. The glass fiber contents of PEGS 0.3%, Micro PPGF 0.1% and Macro PPGF 0.3% showed the highest moisture resistance and rutting resistance. CONCLUSIONS : The test results show that use of glass fiber reinforcement can increase the resistance to cracking, rutting, and moisture damage of asphalt mixtures. It is also necessary to validate the long-term performance of recycled asphalt mixtures with glass fiber using full scale pavement testing and field trial construction.
The icebreaking research vessel (IBRV) ARAON had her second ice trial in the Arctic Ocean in the summer season of 2010. During the voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of the port side were measured using 14 strain gauges. These measurements were carried out in three icebreaking performance tests. To convert the measured strains into the local ice pressures, a finite element model of the instrumented area was developed. The influence coefficient method (ICM), which uses the influence coefficient from the finite element model, and the direct method, which uses the measured strain, were selected as the conversion methods. As a result, the maximum measured pressure was 1.236MPa, and the average difference between ICM and the direct method was about 5% for an area of $0.2m^2$. The pressure-area relationship of the measurement falls below the range of the existing pressure-area curve, which is due to the low ice strength of melted ice in the summer.
The ground movements during three. full-scale trial diaphragm wall (DW) panel constructions were monitored and analysed. The DW panels were constructed in reclaimed fill where sedimentary marine deposit and residual weathered soils are being consolidated. The monitoring data showed exceptionally large lateral ground movements of up to 293 mm near a trench due to the DW panel constructions, which is about 0.8$\%$ D, where D is the maximum excavation depth. It was observed that deliberate holding period of the trench resulted in a significant increase in the lateral ground movements of about 50-225$\%$. A pre-treatment of the marine deposit by installing a single line of jet grout columns around the trench prior to the excavation was found to be a very effective way of reducing the ground movements. The measured ground settlements were compared with some relevant case histories. DW panel constructions in sedimentary marine deposit are likely to cause maximum ground surface settlement up to 0.225$\%$ D.
Geosynthetic damage has attracted a major attention since the introduction of geotextiles for civil engineering applications. In this study 3 pilot trial embankments were carried out to investigate the behaviours of reinforced embankments over soft cohesive soils and to find the optimum methodology of embankments over soft soils. As the seamed part of polyester mat (PET, tensile strength 15 ton) used in the first full-scale field test was ruptured under progressing rotational slope failure because of unexpectedly rapid construction of embankments, the excessive pore water pressures were measured. On the soil behavior where tension explosion of mat was continued, pore pressure larger than the one caused by embankment height was measured. Especially, at the depth of 5.0 m under the ground pore pressure increased over long term. It was discussed with respect to the height of embankment and heaving behavior of soft soils.
