  • To realise the full benefits of a self-centering seismic resilient system, the designer must ensure that the entire structure does indeed re-center following an earthquake. The idealised flag-shaped hysteresis response that is often used to define the cyclic behaviour of self-centering concrete systems seldom exists and the residual drift of a building subjected to an earthquake is dependent on the realistic cyclic hysteresis response as well as the dynamic loading history. Current methods that are used to ensure that re-centering is achieved during the design of self-centering concrete systems are presented, and a series of cyclic analyses are used to demonstrate the flaws in these current procedures, even when idealised hysteresis models were used. Furthermore, results are presented for 350 time-history analyses that were performed to investigate the expected residual drift of an example self-centering concrete wall system during an earthquake. Based upon the results of these time-history analyses it was concluded that due to dynamic shake-down the residual drifts at the conclusion of the ground motion were significantly less than the maximum possible residual drifts that were observed from the cyclic hysteresis response, and were below acceptable residual drift performance limits established for seismic resilient structures. To estimate the effect of the dynamic shakedown, a residual drift ratio was defined that can be implemented during the design process to ensure that residual drift performance targets are achieved for self-centering concrete wall systems.

  • Lean combustion in a SI engine is one of the best solution for the improvement of fuel economy and reduction of pollutant emission. In order to access a lean combustion engine, stable combustion at lean AlF ratio is needed. In this paper, the effect of fuel injection timing on lean misfire limit has been investigated in an MPI engine. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, three different swirl generating SCV(swirl control valve) configurations were considered, and investigated their effects on lean misfire limit and torque at full load operation. Also the effects of spark timing on lean combustion has been investigated. Lean combustion has been examined and the results are reported in this paper. SCV B has been developed to satisfy the requirements of sufficient swirl generation to improve lean combustion and stable performance. It is found that injection timing, spark timing and intake air motion govern the stable lean combustion.

  • In order perform leak-before-break design of nuclear piping systems and integrity evaluation of reactor vessels, full stress-strain (.sigma. - .epsilon.) curves and fracture resistance (J-R) curves are required. However it is time-consuming and expensive to obtain J-R curves experimentally. The objective of this paper is to develop two methods for J-R curve prediction. In the first method, elastic-plastic finite element analyses for a series of crack length / specimen width ratio were performed. Accordingly the load versus load line displacement (P .delta.) curve corresponding to the fracture strain is obtained and the J-R curve based on the generalized locus method is obtained. In the second method, the correlation between .sigma.-.epsilon. curves and J-R curves was statistically analyzed and an empirical equation to predict the J-R curve from the .sigma.-.epsilon. test result is proposed. A good correlation between the predicted results based on the proposed methods and the experimental ones is obtained.

  • This study investigates the extent to which the implementation of enterprise resource planning(ERP) systems enhance the corporate performance by examining financial variables of the implemented firms against those of the control fm. A total of 346 observations were obtained from 160 firms, 80 implemented firms and 80 control firms, for the period of 1998-2002. Results from the study partly support the assertion that ERP improves the full spectrum of business functions such as selling, marketing, purchasing, warehousing, accounting and human resources by tightly integrating enterprise-wise information databases. First the profitability of the implemented group was different from that of the control group. The indicator (dummy) variable was able to explain the differences in total cash flows between the implemented group fm and the control group firms. Second, ERP turned out In improve the efficiency in managing assets. The indicator variable has the power in explaining the differences in the amount of accounts receivables between the implemented group firms and the control group firms. Third, the product turnover ratio of the implemented group was different from that of the control group. Fourth, the average value added per employee and the net income per employee of the implemented group firms were greats- than those of the control group firms. Finally, the average magnitude of the administrative expenses of the implemented group firms was smaller than that of the control group firms.

  • This paper describes the Raman scattering characteristics of polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC films, which were deposited on the thermally oxidized Si(100) substrate by the atmosphere pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) method according to growth temperature. TO and LO phonon modes to 2.0m thick poly 3C-SiC deposited at $1180^{\circ}C$ were measured at 794.4 and $965.7\;cm^{-1}$ respectively. From the intensity ratio of $I_{(LO)}/I_{(TO)}$ 1.0 and the broad full width half maximum (FWHM) of TO modes, itcan be elucidated that the crystallinity of 3C-SiC forms polycrystal instead of disordered crystal and the crystal defect is small. At the interface between 3C-SiC and $SiO_2$, $1122.6\;cm^{-1}$ related to C-O bonding was measured. Here poly 3C-SiC admixes with nanoparticle graphite with the Raman shifts of D and G bands of C-C bonding 1355.8 and $1596.8\;cm^{-1}$. Using TO mode of 2.0 m thick poly 3C-SiC, the biaxial stress was calculated as 428 MPa.

  • A 3-dimensional FDLB model with additional internal degree of freedom is applied for diatomic gases such as air, in which an additional distribution function is introduced. Direct simulations of aero-acoustic by using the applied model and scheme are presented. Speed of sound is correctly recovered. As typical examples, the Aeolian tone emitted by a circular column is successfully simulated even very low Mach number flow. Acoustic pressure fluctuations with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street compared with the pressure fluctuation around a circular column is captured. Full three-dimensional acoustic wave past a compact block like pentagon, furthermore, is also emitted in y direction as dipole like sound.

  • A novel three-level DC/DC converter (TLC)for high power applications operating from high input voltage Is proposed. Its switch voltage stress can be ensured to be only one-half of the Input voltage. Nevertheless, since all input voltage is applied to the transformer primary side, it has good turns ratio. The driving method of each module is same as those of the conventional phase-shifted ZVS full bridge PWM converter (PSFB) and the zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of the leading leg are achieved exactly in the same manner as that of the PSFB. Moreover, its three-level operation can considerably reduce the current ripple through the output inductor and it has no problems of the DC-link voltage unbalance. Therefore, it features a low voltage stress, high efficiency, low EMI, high power density, and small sized filter. To confirm the operation, validity, and features of the proposed circuit, experimental results from a 200W, 600V/DC-48V/DC prototype are presented.

  • This paper presents a novel 90 GHz band 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system. The system can deliver 6 Gbps through six channels with a bandwidth of 3 GHz. Each channel occupies 500 MHz and delivers 1 Gbps using 16-QAM OFDM. To implement the system, a low-noise amplifier and an RF up/down conversion fourth-harmonically pumped mixer are implemented using a $0.1-{\mu}m$ gallium arsenide pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor process. A polarization-division duplex architecture is used for full-duplex communication. In a digital modem, OFDM with 256-point fast Fourier transform and (255, 239) Reed-Solomon forward error correction codecs are used. The modem can compensate for a carrier-frequency offset of up to 50 ppm and a symbol rate offset of up to 1 ppm. Experiment results show that the system can achieve a bit error rate of $10^{-5}$ at a signal-to-noise ratio of about 19.8 dB.

  • A novel power amplifier for a polar transmitter is proposed to achieve better spectral performance for a wideband envelope signal. In the proposed scheme, 2-bit sigma-delta (${\Sigma}{\Delta}$) modulation of the envelope signal is introduced, and the power amplifier configuration is modified in a binary form to accommodate the 2-bit digitized envelope signals. The 2-bit ${\Sigma}{\Delta}$ modulator lowers the noise of the envelope signal by fine quantization and thus enhances the spectral property of the RF signal. The Ptolemy simulation results of the proposed structure show that the spectral noise is reduced by 10 dB in a full transmit band of the EDGE system. The dynamic range is also enhanced. Since the performance is improved without increasing the over-sampling ratio, this technique is best suited for wireless communication with high data rates.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical changes during the aerobic composting of swine manure mixed with bulking agent, sawdust(v/v, 1:1), in a full-scale composting plant using rectangular escalator-aginated bed composting system. Physical and chemical properties were analyzed on the samples which were collected at 5, 15, and 25 day of composting, curing and final step. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. Moisture and K2O content, and pH of final step were higher than those of 5th day of composting (p<0.05). 2. Ammonium nitrogen, total organic corbon and organic matter content, and electrical conductivity(EC) were significantly decreased (p<0.05) but nitrate nitrogen, ash and P2O5 content increased(p<0.05) throughout the aerobic composting process. 3. Total organic carbon per total nitrogen(C/N) and total organic matter per total nitrogen(OM/N) ratio were significantly decreased throughout the aerobic composting process(p<0.05). 4. Physical and chemical properties of swine manure were varied by aerobic fermentation using rectangular escalor-aginated bed composting system.
