Re-carbonation of Calcined Limestone Under Oxy-Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Conditions (순산소 순환유동층 연소 조건에서 생석회의 재탄산화 반응)

  • In order to investigate the re-carbonation behaviors of limestones in an oxy-circulating fluidized bed combustor (Oxy-CFBC), the re-carbonation characteristics of domestic 4 different limestone samples were analyzed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA-N1000) with the higher concentration of $CO_2$. Effect of reaction temperature ($600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) and $CaCO_3$ content (77~95%) of limestones were determined and the mass change of the CaO was observed. Under the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, the conversion rate increased with increasing reaction temperature. However, the conversion rate decreased with increasing reaction temperature over $800^{\circ}C$. In the case of $CaCO_3$ content, the conversion was remarkably different at $870^{\circ}C$. In addition, reaction rate equations for simulating the re-carbonation of limestone by using gas solid reaction models were proposed in this study.

An Analysis on Inter-Regional Price Linkage of Petroleum Products (석유제품 가격의 지역 간 연계성 분석)

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the oil price and the major petroleum products prices at the trading hubs such as Singapore, North West Europe and the US New York Harbor. We focus on the lead-lag relationship between the weekly petroleum prices from 2009 to 2016 based on the vector error correction model. We find that the oil price leads the prices of petroleum products in the long term, while there is bidirectional causality in the short term. On the other hand, prices of petroleum products in regions with high import dependency, such as Europe gas oil and jet fuel price, are exogenous in the long term. We also present evidence that prices of petroleum products in region with a large global-market share lead prices in other regions. However, if the region is in an over-production situation and low industry concentration, it may lose its price leadership due to intense competition. The result in this study can provide a useful information to petroleum refining companies in forecasting fluctuations of product price, and hence in planning their regional arbitrage trading activities.

  • Hydrazine[$N_2H_4$] is a typical propellant for a rocket fuel in the field of aerospace. Since it is very toxic and harmful to the environment, various environmentally-friendly propellants have been developed. In this study, relatively a safe propellant, hydroxylammonium nitrate[$NH_3OHNO_3$], was prepared via a neutralization reaction of hydroxylamine[$NH_2OH$] and nitric acid[$HNO_3$]. FT-IR was used to analyze the chemical composition, chemical structure and functional groups of HAN. Thermogravimetric analysis showed the decomposition temperature of HAN. Ion chromatography was also used to evaluate the content of nitrate ions. It was proved that the peaks of FT-IR at $3161cm^{-1}$ and $1324cm^{-1}$ indicates the functionalities of N-H and N-O present in HAN. The decomposition temperature of HAN synthesized at pH 5 to 7 was $120-140^{\circ}C$, and pH 8 resulted in higher decomposition temperature than $140^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile, the sample obtained from pH 6-7 showed the concentration of nitric acid ion with 70%.

Numerical analysis of melt migration and solidification behavior in LBR severe accident with MPS method

  • In Lead-based reactor (LBR) severe accident, the meltdown and migration inside the reactor core will lead to fuel fragment concentration, which may further cause re-criticality and even core disintegration. Accurately predicting the migration and solidification behavior of melt in LBR severe accidents is of prime importance for safety analysis of LBR. In this study, the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method is validated and used to simulate the migration and solidification behavior. Two main surface tension models are validated and compared. Meanwhile, the MPS method is validated by the L-plate solidification test. Based on the improved MPS method, the migration and solidification behavior of melt in LBR severe accident was studied furthermore. In the Pb-Bi coolant, the melt flows upward due to density difference. The migration and solidification behavior are greatly affected by the surface tension and viscous resistance varying with enthalpy. The whole movement process can be divided into three stages depending on the change in velocity. The heat transfer of core melt is determined jointly by two heat transfer modes: flow heat transfer and solid conductivity. Generally, the research results indicate that the MPS method has unique advantage in studying the migration and solidification behavior in LBR severe accident.

Experimental Assessment of the Methanol Addition Effect on the Tribological Characteristics of Ni-based Alloy (메탄올 첨가에 따른 Ni 기반 합금의 트라이볼로지 특성 변화에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Currently, the demand for green technologies toward a sustainable future is rapidly increasing due to growing concern over environmental issues. Methanol is biodegradable and can provide clean combustion to reduce sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, and therefore it is a candidate fuel for marine engines. However, the effect of methanol on tribological characteristic degradation should be addressed for methanol-fueled engines. In this study, the methanol addition effects on tribological characteristic degradation is experimentally assessed using a pin-on-disk tribo-tester. Ni-based alloy is used as a target material due to its broad applicability as an engine component material. For a lubricant, engine oil with and without methanol are used. The tests are conducted for up to 10,000 cycles under boundary lubrication while the change in friction force is monitored. Additionally, the wear rate is determined based on laser scanning confocal microscope data. An additional test in which methanol is added at regular intervals is performed with an aim to directly observe its effect on friction. Overall, the friction coefficient increases slightly with increasing methanol concentration. Furthermore, the wear rate of the pin and disk increase significantly with methanol addition. The results also indicate that the friction increases instantaneously with methanol addition at the contacting interface. These findings may be useful for better understanding the methanol effect on the tribological characteristics of Ni-based alloys for methanol-fueled engines with improved performance.

Acute oral toxicity and bioavailability of uranium and thorium in contaminated soil

  • A robust approach was conducted to determining the absolute oral bioavailable (fab) fractions of 238U and 232Th in rats exposed to contaminated soil along with their hematotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. The soil sample is the International Atomic Energy Agency-312 (IAEA-312) certified reference material, whereas blood, bones, and kidneys of in vivo female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats estimate 238U- and 232Th-fab fractions post-exposure. We predict the bioavailable concentration (Cab) and fab values of 238U and 232Th after acute soil ingestion. The blood 238U (0.750%) and 232Th (0.028%) reach their maximum fab values after 48 h. The 238U (fab: 0.169-0.652%) accumulates mostly in the kidney, whereas the 232Th (fab: 0.004-0.021%) accumulates primarily in the bone. Additionally, 238U is more bioavailable than 232Th. Post 48 h acute ingestion demonstrates noticeable histopathological and hematological alterations, implying that intake of 238U in co-contaminated soil can lead to erythrocytes and proximal tubules damage, whereas, 232Th intake can harm erythrocytes. Our study provides new directions for future research into the health implications of acute oral exposures to 238U and 232Th in co-contaminated soils. The findings offer significant insight into the utilization of in vivo SD rat testing to estimate 238U and 232Th bioavailability and toxicity in exposure assessment.

  • Most of the domestic city buses are equipped with the pressure vessels subjected to internal pressure applied by compressed natural gas. Pressure vessels subjected to internal pressure are used in various forms and purposes. Fuel is explosive and has flammable high pressure. The damage of the pressure vessel causes many property damage and loss of life. Safe design for pressure vessel is always necessary. Due to these reasons, many studies using finite element analysis have been conducted. In this paper, the stresses of cylindrical vessel and spherical dome were analyzed using ANSYS, a finite element analysis software. In order to verify the validity of the analysis, a model with a perfectly spherical shape of the dome was designed and observed. Based on the ASME standard in used, stress distribution was also analyzed for models designed with compressed natural gas(CNG). The FEM analysis software agreed with the theory when the dome shape was perfectly spherical. The model designed based on the ASME specification theory, stress concentration occurred in the knuckle part.

A Genetically Encoded Biosensor for the Detection of Levulinic Acid

  • Levulinic acid (LA) is a valuable chemical used in fuel additives, fragrances, and polymers. In this study, we proposed possible biosynthetic pathways for LA production from lignin and poly(ethylene terephthalate). We also created a genetically encoded biosensor responsive to LA, which can be used for screening and evolving the LA biosynthesis pathway genes, by employing an LvaR transcriptional regulator of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 to express a fluorescent reporter gene. The LvaR regulator senses LA as a cognate ligand. The LA biosensor was first examined in an Escherichia coli strain and was found to be non-functional. When the host of the LA biosensor was switched from E. coli to P. putida KT2440, the LA biosensor showed a linear correlation between fluorescence intensity and LA concentration in the range of 0.156-10 mM LA. In addition, we determined that 0.156 mM LA was the limit of LA detection in P. putida KT2440 harboring an LA-responsive biosensor. The maximal fluorescence increase was 12.3-fold in the presence of 10 mM LA compared to that in the absence of LA. The individual cell responses to LA concentrations reflected the population-averaged responses, which enabled high-throughput screening of enzymes and metabolic pathways involved in LA biosynthesis and sustainable production of LA in engineered microbes.

Evaluating the Properties and Commercializing Potential Of Rape Stalk-based Pellets Produced with a Pilot-scaled Flat-die Pellet Mill (파일럿 규모의 평다이 성형기로 제조한 유채대 펠릿의 연료적 특성 및 상용화 가능성 평가)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of rape stalk (RAS) as a raw material for the production of solid bio-fuels. RAS was immersed in an aqueous solution with acetic acid concentration of 1 percent, The content of reducing sugars separated from the RAS was analyzed. Glucose showed the highest content followed by xylose, galactose, arabinose and mannose. The immersed and non-immersed RAS were used for producing pellets with a pilot-scaled flat-die pellet mill. Bulk density and calorific values of the pellets improved with the use of the immersed RAS and the addition of wood particles. The values exceeded the minimum requirements for the A-grade of non-woody pellets (≧600 kg/m3 & ≧ 14.5 MJ/kg) designated by the ISO. Ash content of the pellets reduced with the immersion of RAS and the value satisfied the A-grade level (≦6.0%) of the ISO standard. The durability of the immersed RAS-based pellets was much higher than that of non-immersed IRS-based pellets, and the values were increased with the addition of wood particles. However, the durability did not meet the acceptance level for the B-grade of non-woody pellets (≧96.0%) designated by the ISO. These results suggested that the addition of binders in the production of non-woody pellets using an RAS immersed in acetic acid-based aqueous solution is required for the commercialization of the pellets.

Study on Weather Modification Hybrid Rocket Experimental Design and Application (기상조절용 하이브리드 로켓의 실험 설계 및 활용연구)

  • The National Institute of Meteorological Sciences in Korea has developed the Weather Modification Hybrid Rocket (WMHR), an advanced system that offers enhanced stability and cost-effectiveness over conventional solid-fuel rockets. Designed for precise operation, the WMHR enables accurate control over the ejection altitude of pyrotechnics by modulating the quantity of oxidizer, facilitating specific cloud seeding at various atmospheric layers. Furthermore, the rate of descent for pyrotechnic devices can be adjusted by modifying parachute sizes, allowing for controlled dispersion time and concentration of seeding agents. The rocket's configuration also supports adjustments in the pyrotechnic device's capacity, permitting tailored seeding agent deployment. This innovation reflects significant technical progression and collaborations with local manufacturers, in addition to efforts to secure testing sites and address hybrid rocket production challenges. Notable outcomes of this project include the creation of a national framework for weather modification technology utilizing hybrid rockets, enhanced cloud seeding methods, and the potential for broader meteorological application of hybrid rockets beyond precipitation augmentation. An illustrative case study confirmed the WMHR's operational effectiveness, although the impact on cloud seeding was limited by unfavorable weather conditions. This experience has provided valuable insights and affirmed the system's potential for varied uses, such as weather modification and deploying high-altitude meteorological sensors. Nevertheless, the expansion of civilian weather rocket experiments in Korea faces challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and regulatory limitations, underscoring the urgent need for advancements in these areas.
