  • In recent years, the development of fuel cell vehicles has further accelerated because of environmental problem and petroleum resources shortage. The fuel cell vehicles have the stack which converts fuel to electricity. The stack is usually mounted by bush to isolate the vibration of chassis and body. This paper analyzed the vibratory characteristics of stack and chassis, body system. The wheel forces of fuel cell vehicle are measured to estimate the road load data. And the paths of vibration from wheel to stack are analyzed by CAE. According to the test and CAE results, the improvement of stack vibration are evaluated.

  • An free breathing proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was developed. This paper presents a study of the several effect on the performance of a fuel cell such as air flow rate, opening ratio, and cathode structures. Especially, an air flow rate is critical condition to improve the fuel cell performance. In this paper, we developed a synthetic jet micro air blower to supply high stoichiometric air. The synthetic jet actuation is usually generated by a traditional PZT-driven actuator, which consists of a small cylindrical cavity, orifices and PZT diaphragms. In comparison with free convection fuel cells, the forced-convection fuel cell which equipped synthetic jet micro air blower brings higher performance and stability for long term test. Also, power consumption of the synthetic jet micro air blower is under 0.3W. The results show that the maximum power density was $188mW/cm^2$ at $400mA/cm^2$. The maximum power density was higher 40% than power density of free convection fuel cell.

  • Using the anaerobic digester gas as a fuel, fuel cells have the potential to provide significant environmental and economic benefits. A molten carbonate fuel cell power plant was installed in the municipal sewage works of Tancheon in Seoul. The fuel cell unit operates on anaerobic digester gas and provides power and heat for the sewage works. This is the first project of its kind in Korea. This article outlines the experiences of gas purification process with planning, installation and operation. The engineering and installation phase is described regarding to the special features of digester gas, for example impurities in gas composition. Such impurities would be harmful to fuel cells. Operational results from the field test with a gas purification process plant are presented in this paper.

  • Military rotorcraft should be designed taking into account the condition of the fuel cell bullet impact. The internal fluid pressure, stress of metal fitting and fuel cell, bullet kinetic energy can be included as the design factor for the fuel cell. The best way to obtain the important design data is to conduct the verification test with actual product. But, the verification test requires huge cost and long-term effort. Moreover, there is high risk to fail because of the sever test condition. Thus, the numerical simulation is required to reduce the risk of trial-and-error together with prediction of the design data. In the present study, the bullet impact simulation based on SPH(smoothed particle hydrodynamics) is conducted with the commercial package, LS-DYNA. As the result of the numerical simulation, the internal pressure of fuel cell is calculated as 350~360MPa and the equivalent stress caused by hydro-ram effect is predicted as 260~350MPa on metal fittings.

  • Differences in the frequency characteristic applied to a ripple current may shorten fuel cell life span and worsen the fuel efficiency. Therefore, this paper presents an experimental analysis of the ripple current applied variable frequency characteristic in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This paper provides the first attempt to examine the impact of ripple current through immediate measurements on a single cell test. After cycling for hours at three frequencies, each polarization and impedance curve is obtained and compared with those of a fuel cell. Through experimental results, it can be absolutely concluded that low frequency ripple current leads to long-term degradation of a fuel cell. Three different PEMFC failures such as membrane dehydration, flooding and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning that lead to an increase in the impedance magnitude at low frequencies are simply introduced.

  • Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle is an attractive solution to reduce pollutants, such as noise and carbon dioxide emission. This study presents an approach for energy management and control algorithm based on energetic macroscopic representation for a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle that is powered by proton exchange membrane fuel cell, battery and supercapacitor. First, the detailed model of the fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle, including fuel cell, battery, supercapacitor, DC-DC converters and powertrain system, are built on the energetic macroscopic representation. Next, the power management strategy was applied to manage the energy among the three power sources. Moreover, the control scheme that was based on back-stepping sliding mode control and inversed-model control techniques were deduced. Simulation tests that used a worldwide harmonized light vehicle test procedure standard driving cycle showed the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • The present study conducts a series of experiments to develop a novel air supplying module for a micro fuel cell using piezoelectric linear actuator. An intermittently and operating air breathing module with reciprocating motion of the linear actuator has been suggested in the present study. A test bench for a micro fuel cell system has been constructed to estimate performance of the active fuel cell system using the air supplying module. With the stroke and operating duty as main control parameters, the optimal operating method of the air supplying module has been discussed.

  • This study deals with a basic proposal to prove the safety for the exhausted fittings of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. First, this study was approached to numerical analysis solving to close the exact boundary condition (Axial, Bending, Lateral) and the second, this study produced the Lateral movement equipment for the vibration. For the numerical analysis, This study was considered with the exact solution of Lateral movement and the resonance effect for durability sample according to fitting positions. The second, This study was made for special equipment for displacement/gas leak and the frequency because the domestic samples were comparing with foreign fitting and foreign fitting for the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. The result of this study was satisfied with domestic fittings for the basic reference but it need more test because of other situation for hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

  • Testing was conducted to determine the performance of a residential fuel cell system when subjected to DSS and WSS operation, especially for start-up and shut-down characteristics. In terms of start-up time, it took about 70min to start output power generation and stably to reach 1kW at cold start. Measurement of the characteristics of heat and power generation were carried out at start-up and shut-down time. Fuel gas is used for heating both reformer and stack from start-up to the beginning of power generation. In terms of start-up and shut-down characteristics, it was important to control the reformer temperature precisely. The average output water temperature during the rated output operation(960W) was $63.2^{\circ}C$ constantly. The results of the investigation are being used to develop a new test protocols for residential fuel cell system.
