According to the stringent exhaust emission regulation control of air fuel ratio is one of the most important issues on gasoline engine. Although many researches have been carried out to identify the fuel transport phenomena in a port fueled gasoline engine, complexity of fuel film behavior in the intake port makes it difficult. The fuel film behavior was investigated recently by using visualization method and these gave us qualitative understanding. In this paper, the quantitative measurement method for the port fuel film is studied by using Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). The mass of fuel film on the port wall was measured by using the methods of fuel injection off, injection on and regression. The Fuel film mass was increased with incresing load at the same engine speed.
Biodiesel fuel has different spray patterns, because viscosity and surface tension of biodiesel fuel are higher than that of diesel fuel. The diesel combustion is strongly controlled by the fuel spray behavior in combustion chamber. So, it was needed to understand the spay characteristics of non-esterification biodiesel fuel. In this study, the spray characteristics of non-esterification biodiesel fuel was investigated to confirm of an effect of WDP. The characteristics of fuel atomization was analyzed with SMD and span factor through laser diffraction particle analyzer (LDPA), and the process of spray injection was visualized through the visualization system composed of a halogen lamp and high speed camera. It was found that injection delay time and SMD of blended fuel with WDP get shoter and smaller than that of non-esterification biodiesel fuel.
In order to investigate a characteristic of the behavior of spray pattern in accordance with running conditions for a DI diesel engine, the PLN Injection system with changeable revolution speed of fuel injection cam was set up, and through this, history curves of injection pressure for a similar real DI diesel engine were able to be displayed. Authors visualized and analyzed the sprays at various revolution speed of fuel injection cam, and found out that fuel distributions of the sprays in the low speed condition were bad, fuel with air was injected from the hole of nozzle at the beginning of injection, and wide spray angle at the early stage of injection became narrower with elapsed time, but wider again at the end of injection.

This study was performed to investigate the behavior and spatial distribution of fuel mixtures with different wall angle and diameter of piston cavity in a DI gasoline engine. The spatial distribution of fuel mixtures after impingement of the spray against a piston cavity is one of the most important. factors for the stratification of fuel mixture. Thus, it is informative to understand in detail the behavior and spatial distribution of fuel mixtures after impingement in the cavity. Two dimensional spray fluorescence images of liquid and vapor phase were acquired to analyze the behavior and distribution of fuel mixtures inside cylinder by exciplex fluorescence method. The exciplex system of fluorobenzene/DEMA in non-fluorescing base fuel of hexane was employed. Cavity wall angle was defined as an exterior angle of piston cavity. Wall angles of the piston cavity were set to 30, 60 and 90 degrees, respectively. The spray impinges on the cavity and diffuses along the cavity wall by its momentum. In the case of 30 degrees, the rolling-up moved from the impinging location to the round and fuel-rich mixture distributed at periphery of cylinder. In the case of 60 and 90 degrees, the rolling-up recircurated in the cavity and fuel mixtures concentrated at center region. High concentrated fuel vapor phase was observed in the cavity with 90 degrees. From. present study, it was found that the desirable cavity wall angle with cavity diameter for stratification in a Dl gasoline engine was demonstrated.
The focus of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for investigating the dynamic performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The model in this work is based on physical laws having clear significance in replicating the fuel cell system and can easily be used to set up different operational strategies. Simulation results display the transient behavior of the voltage within each single cell, and also within a number of such single cells combined into a fuel cell stack system. A linear as well as a nonlinear analysis of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system(PEMFC) has been discussed in order to present a complete and comprehensive view of this kind of modeling. Also, a comparison of the two kinds of analysis has been performed. Finally, the various characteristics of the fuel cell system are plotted in order to help us understand its dynamic behavior. Results indicate that there is a considerable amount of error in the modeling process if we use a linear model of the fuel cell. Thus, the nonlinearities present in the fuel cell system should be taken into account in order to obtain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of the fuel cell system.

Welding is required for a connection between two different components in the nuclear fuel of a pressurized water reactor. This work relies on a mechanical experiment and analytic results to investigate the structural integrity of nuclear fuel in a situation where some components are not welded to each other. A series of lateral vibration tests are performed in a test facility, and the test structures are examined in terms of dynamic behavior. In the tests, the displacement signal at every grid structure that sustains fuel rods is measured and processed to identify the dynamic properties. The fluid-elastic stability of the structure is also analyzed to evaluate susceptibility to a cross flow with an assumed conservative cross flow distribution. The test and analysis results confirm that the structural integrity can be maintained even in the absence of some welding connections.

According to the stringent exhaust emission regulation, precise control of air fuel ratio is one of the most important issues on gasoline engine. Although many researches have been carried out to identify the fuel transport phenomena in a port fueled gasoline engine, complexity of fuel film behavior in the intake port makes it difficult. The fuel film behavior was investigated recently by using visualization method and these gave us qualitative understanding. The purpose of this study is to estimate of wall wetting fuel in the intake port and the inducted fuel mass was predicted by using wall wetting fuel model . The model coefficient($\alpha$,$\beta$) and fuel film mass on the port wall were determined from measured in-cylinder HC concentration using FRFID after injection off. The fuel film mass was increased, but $\alpha$(ratio of directly inducted fuel mass into cylinder from injected fuel mass) was decreased with increasing load at the same engine speed. $\beta$is nearly constant value(0.8~0.9). when injected fuel mass is varied at 1500rpm , the calculated air fuel ratio using well wetting fuel model was nearly the same as measured by UEGO.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are among one of the promising technologies for efficient and clean energy. SOFCs offer several advantages over other types of fuel cells under relatively high temperatures (600℃ to 800℃). However, the thermal behavior of SOFC stacks at high operating temperatures is a serious issue in SOFC development because it can be associated with detrimental thermal stresses on the life span of the stacks. The thermal behavior of SOFC stacks can be influenced by operating or material properties. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the effects of the thermal conductivity of each component (anode, cathode, and electrolyte) on the thermal behavior of samarium-doped ceria-based SOFCs at intermediate temperatures. Computational fluid dynamics is used to simulate SOFC operation at 600℃. The temperature distributions and gradients of a single cell at 0.7 V under different thermal conductivity values are analyzed and discussed to determine their relationship. Simulations reveal that the influence of thermal conductivity is more remarkable for the anode and electrolyte than for the cathode. Increasing the thermal conductivity of the anode by 50% results in a 23% drop in the maximum thermal gradients. The results for the electrolyte are subtle, with a ~67% reduction in thermal conductivity that only results in an 8% reduction in the maximum temperature gradient. The effect of thermal conductivity on temperature gradient is important because it can be used to predict thermal stress generation.
The burning-out of excess plutonium from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel and from the dismantlement of nuclear weapons is recently emphasized due to the difficulties in securing the final repository for the spent fuel and the necessity to consume the ex-weapons plutonium. An irradiation test in the Halden reactor was launched by the OECD Halden Reactor Project (HRP) to investigate the in-pile behavior of plutonium-embedded fuel as a form of mixed oxide (MOX) and of inert matrix fuel (IMF). The first cycle of irradiation was successfully accomplished with good integrity of test fuel rods and without any undesirable fault of instrumentations. The test results revealed that the MOX fuel is more stable under irradiation environments than IMF. In addition, MOX fuel shows lower thermal resistance due to its better thermal conductivity than IMF. The on-line measured in-pile performance data of attrition milled MOX fuel are used in the analysis of the in-pile performance of the fuel with the fuel performance code, COSMOS. The COSMOS code has been developed for the analysis of MOX fuel as well as $UO_2$ fuel up to high burnup and showed good capability to analyze the in-reactor behavior of MOX fuel even with different instrumentation.
Three-dimensional finite element simulations are implemented for the in-pile thermo-mechanical behavior in U-Mo/Al monolithic fuel plates with different thermal creep rates of cladding involved. The numerical results indicate that the thickness increment of fuel foil rises with the thermal creep coefficient of cladding. The maximum Mises stress of cladding is reduced by ~85% from 344 MPa on the 98.0th day when the creep coefficient of cladding increases from 0.01 to 10.0, due to its equivalent thermal creep strain enlarged by 3.5 times. When the thermal creep coefficient of Aluminum cladding increases from 0 to 1.0, the maximum mesoscale stress of fuel foil varies slightly. At the same time, the peak mesoscale normal stress of fuel foil can reach 51 MPa on the 98.0th day for the thermal creep coefficient of 10, which increases by 60.3% of that with the thermal creep un-occurred in the cladding. The maximum through-thickness creep strain components of fuel foil differ slightly for different thermal creep coefficients of cladding. The dangerous region of fuel foil becomes much closer to the heavily irradiated side when the creep coefficient of cladding becomes 10.0. The creep performance of Aluminum cladding should be optimized for the integrity of monolithic fuel plates.
