  • To clarify the morphological variations of Galium, its morphological characteristics were examined using maximum parsimony analysis. The key characteristics as well as the range of variation in each characteristic were investigated at the species level and were employed to elucidate the relationships between the taxa. This study confirmed that species belonging to genus Galium formed a monophyletic group and comprised two main clades. Sect. Cymogaliae and sect. Leptogalium are polyphyly groups, and other sections are monophyletic group. This study also suggests that the fruit hairs, the types of petal apexes, and the colors of the petals are the most valuable taxonomic characteristics for differentiating different sections. The numbers of the leaves and leaf shape provide useful taxonomic characteristics for the identification of different species.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how important providing nutrition education to young students is. The study is based on the assumption that students' food behavior, nutrition knowledge and cognition of body image, weight control and nutrition education are considerably influenced by gender. A total of 495 students (249 boy and 246 girl students) were surveyed in one middle school located Siheungsi, Gyeonggido. The average height and weight of the boy and girl students are 164.6 cm, 54.4 kg and l58.5cm, 47kg, respectively. According to average BMI, the boy students($20.0kg/m^2$) are in the normal state. However, the girl students($18.2kg/m^2$) are underweight. For the status of meal intake, 52.4% of the students took breakfast everyday. Female students had dinner with lower intake frequency than males(p<0.05). For snack intake, the kinds of snack differ according to gender(p<0.05); more milk for male and more fruit for female students. The scores of dietary behavior based on Mini Dietary Assessment were 21.5/30 for male and 21.3/30 for female students. The nutrition knowledge scores of 4.6/10 for male and 4.6/10 for female students were not significantly different according to gender. The score of dietary behavior is based on Mini Dietary Assessment. The survey shows that in terms of the experience of weight control, 35.5% of the girl students have made an effort to watch their weight and 21.8% of the boy students have tried controlling their weight(p<0.0001). It turns out that the students who have been provided nutrition education are more satisfied with their body shape than those who have never been provided nutrition education(p<0.05).

  • This study was carried out to identify the causal pathogens and investigated the characteristics of Penicillium spp. isolated from postharvest decay of pear. One hundred and ninety eight Penicillium spp. were isolated from infected pear fruits. The lesions were formed when the isolated pathogen were inoculated into the wounds and unwounds of pear fruit. Total isolates were classified into 15 groups by the size, color, pigment of colony and shape of conidia. These isolates were identified to be P.expansum, P.solitum, and P.crustosum according to the types of morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics. The pathogenicity was higher in wound inoculation at low temperature than unwound one. This result confirmed that wound promoted the disease appearance. P.expansum was appeared to have the most strong virulence, whereas P.solitum and P.crustosum were classified as weak virulent species by pathogenicity test on pear fruits.

  • Ggray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea occurred on Balsam pear (Momordica charantia) at Daesan-myon, Changwon city, Gyeongnam province in Korea from 2004 to 2006. The disease symptoms usually started with water-soaking lesions on the fruits tip and stem, and then the infected plants became withered and eventually died. The conidia of the pathogen appeared on the surface of fruit and stem of infected plants. The conidia were one celled and mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were light gray in color, The conidia were $6{\sim}20X4{\sim}12{\mu}m$ in size and conidiophores were $14{\sim}30{\mu}m$ in length. The sclerotia formed abundantly on potato-dextrose agar 18 days after incubation. The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was $20^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch,s postulates. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea Persoon: Fries based on the mycological characteristics. This is the first report on gray mold of M. charantia caused by B. cinerea in Korea.

  • Effect of the thickness of low density polyethylene(LDPE) Film as packaging material on changes in physicochemical characteristics of mature-green mume (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc) fruits during storage at different temperatures(0, 10 and 25$\^{C}$) were investigated. Fruit samples stored in pouches with 30㎛ thickness of LDPE film maintained well not only external qualities such as Shape and firmness, but also internal chemical properties such as pH, acidity, the content of soluble solid and chlorophyll, and color, comparing with samples stored without packaging material or in other pouches with different film thickness(20 and 40㎛). From the results, it was found that the maintenance of quality of mature-green mume fruits during storage at 0, 10 and 25$\^{C}$ closely related to the changes in respiratory conditions for fruits affected by the film thickness of the packaging material.

  • We conducted principal component analyses using the thirty two quantitative characteristics of Najas from South Korea to examine the morphological variation and diagnostic characteristics. As a result of our investigation and the morphometric analyses, each taxon could be identified using the leaf width, shape of the leaf sheath, number of teeth on the leaf margin, number of anther cells, number of areoles in each longitudinal row of seeds, and the ratio of the areole width to the length. Dioecious Najas marina was clearly distinguished from the other monoecious taxa (N. graminea, N. gracillima, N. minor, N. oguraensis, and N. orientalis) by the larger size of the stem, the leaf, the flower and the fruit. The monoecious taxa could be identified using vegetative characteristics except for N. minor and N. oguraensis, which were distinct from each other according to the locule number in the staminate flower.

  • Capparis pubifolia B. S. Sun is reported here as a new addition to the flora of Vietnam. It is morphologically allied to C. sikkimensis Kurz but differs due to the gray-yellow color of the hair of the twigs, having more secondary veins on the leaf, trichomes on both surfaces of the petal, and a globose shape of the fruit. Thus far, it was only reported in the Guangxi and Yunnan areas of China. A description, a line drawing and color photographs are provided for species identification. Furthermore, a comparison of the diagnostic characters with those of related species is made.

  • Interspecific heterokaryons were obtained between auxotrophic mutants of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus florida by polyethylene $glycol-Ca^{++}$ induced fusion of somatic protoplasts. The fusion products produced colonies of dense growing mycelium after 10-14 days culture on hypertonic Mushroom Minimal Medium. When they were transferred to Mushroom Minimal Medium plates, the sectors showed normal vegetative morphology but the colonies of irregular shape varied in growth rate. All of the colonies produced fruit body of normal pilei. Some heterokaryon colonies bearing none or only a small amounts of basidiospores were isolated. Fusion products, generally, gave higher basidiocarp yields than the parents.
