This experiment was carried out to investigate the possibility of practical use of intermittent soaking system(ISS) in hydroponicaly growing tomato. There were four treatments which were NFT, Aeroponics, and ISS with 10 and 15 minute soaking intervals. 1. Plant height is highest in NFT, but main root length is longest in ISS. While stem diameter and leaf number were not significantly difference. 2. Fresh and dry weight were heavier in NFT than those of other systems at early growth stage, but the heavier in ISS system, the growth more develop. 3. In 43 days after treatment, the number of flowerlet was largest in aeroponics, and then ISS and NFT in order. Fruit weight per plant was also heaviest in aeroponics. 4. Average yield per plant were 1929.1g in aeroponics, 1475.2g in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval, 1276.2g in NFT and 1084.8g in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. 5. Average fruit number per plant were 11.0 in aeroponics, 9.7 in NFT, 8.3 in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval, and 7.7 in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval. Average fruit weight were 192.9g in aeroponics, 172.4g in ISS with 10 minute soaking interval, 134.0g in NFT and 126.0g in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. 6. Average fruit length was longer in aeroponics and ISS with 10 minute soaking interval than in the NFT and ISS with 15 minute soaking interval. Average fruit width was similarly wider in NFT, aeroponics and ISS with 10 minute soaking interval than in ISS with 15 minute soaking interval.
We evaluated the use of citrus fruit fermented by lactic acid bacteria, as a feed supplement for flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) cultivation. For the fermentation, a lactic acid bacterial strain W-44 showing antibacterial activity was isolated from kimchi. From the phylogenetic analysis based on, 16S rDNA sequence, the strain W-44 was identified as Lactococcus lactis. After the fermentation of citrus fruit with L. lactis W-44, the contents of naringenin and hesperetin, bioactive flavonoid aglycones, were increased about ten-fold and six-fold, respectively. The effects of fermented citrus fruit-based feed additives (CFBFA) were tested on the growth of flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. There were significant differences in average total length and body weight between the experimental and control group. The growth rate of the experimental group fed with the 0.2% CFBFA-supplemented diet was increased 4.5% and 20.9% more than the control group in total length and body weight, respectively. These results suggest that the fermented citrus fruit could be used as a functional feed additive for flounder cultivation.
In greenhouse farming, a variety of humic acids have been applied to improve soil conditions and plant growth. However, it is still unclear that how humic acids combined with chemical fertilizers affect growth and quality of fruit vegetable crops. This study was conducted to determine the combination effect of humic acids and chemical fertilizers on the growth and fruit quality of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum MILL.) grown under greenhouse conditions. Three different formulation types of humic acid were used: liquid type A, liquid type B and solid type C. The tomato plants were grown in three treatment combination plots and in conventional fertilizer (CF) plot with recommended levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium: HA combined with CF (HA+CF), HB combined with CF (HB+CF) and HC combined with CF (HC+CF). For most of growth characteristics (i.e. leaf number, internode length, maximum leaf length, leaf width and chlorophyll contents) determined in this experiment, no significant differences were observed between all combination treatments and CF. However, integrated fruit qualities (i.e. averaged weight, sugar contents and acidity) were slightly improved in the humic acid combined with CF treatments when compared with CF alone treatment. No phytotoxicity was observed with humic acid treatments. However, further studies will probably be needed to use widely and safely these humic acids, in order to ensure a maximizing growth, fruit yield and quality of tomato.
Anthers of three cross combinations of hot-pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) were cultured on Dumas De Vaulx medium supplemented with some growth regulators. The embryo production efficiency and the diversity for agronomic traits in $A_2$ lines were investigated. The embryo production frequencies of hybrid combinations were ranged from 16.4% to 43.4%, the highest embryo induction combination was DGSH $\times$ C-NH with 43.4% embryogenic efficiency. Among total 275 $A_2$ lines, phenotypic variants were found in six lines, 2.1% variant frequency. The diversity of $A_2$ lines derived from anther culture was different according to the cross combinations. Fruit color was within parental range, no transgressive variation was observed. However leaf color showed transgressive variation. In fruit length, fruit width and fruit weight, one C-HC $\times$ DGSH and DGSH $\times$ C-NH showed great diversity compared with doner parents while Cheokjo 1 $\times$ C-NH crossed with Cheokjo 1 with big fruit shape showed small diversity. Stem length to 1st branch was relatively similer to or longer than donor parents. Stem thick exhibited remarkable diversity. Node number to 1st branch distributed alomost within the range of donor parents in C-HC $\times$ DGSH combination, however great transgressive variations were observed in DGSH $\times$ C-NH and Cheokjo 1 $\times$ C-NH combinations.
This experiment was carried out to compare growth and fruit setting characteristics in ten winter-planted paprika (Capsicim annuum L.) cultivars. Five red line paprika cultivars ('Maduro', 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sirocco' and 'Special') and five yellow line paprika cultivars ('Coletti', 'Sven', 'Thialf', 'Volante' and 'Zagato') were used for this study. The experiment was performed for 42 weeks, from winter of 2013 to autumn of 2014. Based on the growth stages of paprika, growth characteristics were investigated six times, and each investigation was categorized from group 1 through group 6. The relative internode ratio showed a normal range at the early growth stage, but tended to gradually decline as growth progressed. This trend was greater in red line paprika than in yellow line paprika. Among the cultivars used for this experiment, 'Special' and 'Zagato' showed growth inhibition, whereas 'Maranello' and 'Volante' kept a balanced growth during summer cultivation. The fruit set percentage in yellow paprika was 10.8% higher than in red paprika, while the number of branches in yellow paprika was 4.1% less than in red paprika. When measured after the full fruiting age, from June to July, the number of fruit set in group 4 was much lower in 'Sirocco' and 'Coletti' than in any of the other cultivars, indicating that they were more sensitive to the growth environment during the rainy season. These findings suggest that 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sven', 'Thialf', and 'Volante' could be effectively used for summer cultivation in a high-plastic-film greenhouse, and 'Maranello', 'Special', 'Volante', and 'Zagato' could be good candidates for a low-plastic-film greenhouse.

Melons, a rich source of vitamins and fibers, are commonly grown in the soil. Hydroponic cultivation could improve yield and quality of melon and selection of substrate volume and the kind of substrates is important for hydroponic cultivation of melons. This study investigated the effect on melon growth according to volume of granular rockwool and substrates of coir and rockwool slab. 'Geumsegye' melon (Cucumis melo L. cv. Geumsegye) was cultivated hydroponically according to volume of granular rockwool to 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 L, and was also cultivated using coir and rockwool slabs. Logistic model was applied to estimate the growth characteristics of melons such as plant height, leaf length, leaf width, and the characteristics of fruit. The growth characteristics of melons were significantly increased at 4.0 L compared to those grown of 1.0 L volume of on granular rockwool, and the results were the highest in coir and rockwool slabs. Melons grown in rockwool slabs showed the largest fruit fresh weight, fruit length, and fruit width. During hydroponic cultivation, growth characteristics of melon appropriate at the 4.0 L volume of granular rockwool, and the highest at coir and rockwool slabs. This study provides a basis for understanding the effect of root zone environment to the growth characteristics and fruit quality of non-netted melon.

This study was conducted to find out optimum fruiting node order, pinching node order, and harvesting time in hydroponics using coir substrates to produce high quality melon (Cucumis melo L.) fruit. Three plants per coir slab (100 × 20 × 10 cm) were planted for each treatment. Yamazaki standard nutrient solutions for melon were supplied with 1.8, 2.0, and 2.3 dS·m-1 at the early, middle (fruit enlargement step), and late growth stages, respectively. Two cultivars of 'PMR Dalgona' and 'Earl's Aibi' were used for fruiting node order and pinching node order experiments. Fruiting node treatments were conducted three replications (8-10 th, 11-13 th, and 14-15 th nodes) and pinching node treatments treated with three replications (18 th, 21 th, and 24 th nodes). Two cultivars of 'PMR Dalgona' and 'Earl's Crown' were used for fruit harvesting time experiment and treated with in four replications (45, 50, 55, and 60 days after fruiting). In growth characteristics, the leaf width and leaf area of 'PMR Dalgona' were the greatest 28.2 cm and 10,845 ㎠. Respectively, 11-13 th fruiting nodes or more. The node length of 'Earl's Aibi' was the longest by 147.6 cm at 11-13 th fruiting nodes. For fruit quality characteristics, the fruit weight of 'Earl's Aibi' at 11-13 th fruiting node fruiting was the greatest by 2.0 kg. The soluble solids content (SSC) of 'PMR Dalgona' was the highest by 14.5 °Brix at 8-10 th nodes in fruiting node orders and 14.5 °Brix at the 24 th pinching node order, respectively with significant difference. The SSC tends to increase in the same for both cultivars of 'PMR Dalgona' and 'Earl's Aibi' as the position of fruiting node was lower. The SSC and fruit weight of melon harvested at 55-60 days after fruiting was the best. From the results of this study, most of SSC tends to increase in the lower position of fruiting node order and the higher pinching node order, whereas the fruit weight shows a tendency of increasing with higher fruiting node. In addition, the SSC of fruit increased as the number of days after fruiting increased, and further research is needed for more various cultivars. In melon hydroponics using coir substrates, it is needed to figure out the characteristics of each cultivar to determine optimum fruiting node order, pinching node order, and fruit harvest time.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nonwoven fabrics weight(Ounce) on growth, quality and yield of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makwa Mak.). Seedling of 'Gumssaragi-Eunchun' was grafted on 'Shinthozoa' root stock. In this study, The minimum air temperature in 6 ounce at night was $4.8^{\circ}C,\;6.9^{\circ}C$ in 9 ounce, $7.9^{\circ}C$ in 12 ounce and $8.0^{\circ}C$ in 15 ounce, respectively. Leaf length, stem diameter, leaf numbers, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight for 30 days after planting were better in high minimum air temperature at night than in low minimum air temperature, particularly leaf areas of the plant in 9 ounce was $370cm^2$ at 30 days after planting, $116\%$ in 12 ounce, $129\%$ in 15 ounce. The xylem exudates amount in 9 ounce for 24 hours just after basal stem abscission was 10.1mg. It was 1.2 times much in 12 ounce and 1.9times much in 15 ounce than in 9 ounce at 30 days after planting. The blooming of female was faster by 6 days in 15 and 12 ounce but was delayed by 3 days in 6 ounce than 9 ounce, and the days of blooming to harvesting were shorter by 3 days in 15 ounce and 4 days in 12 ounce but was delayed by 3 days in 6 ounce than in 9 ounce. Fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, soluble solids, and total yield was the highest in 15 ounce followed by 12 ounce,9 ounce and 6 ounce. Fermented fruit rate was the highest in 6 ounce followed by 9 ounce, 12 ounce and 15 ounce, and marketable fruit rates were 15, 12, 9 and 6 ounce in order. Compared to 1,781kg yield per 10a of 9 ounce, $19\%\;and\;49\%$ was increased under 12 ounce and 15 ounce but $47\%$ were decreased 6 ounce.

In the area of the destruction-free NIR analysis of fruit and vegetables development has not yet progressed as far as in grain and similar products. One reason for that is, that in contrast to grains, in fruit and vegetables water appears as the outstanding main-component making up typically 80% by weight of the fruit. Of the M absorption spectrum of pure water the bands at 1450, 970 and 760 nm are the first, second and third overtones respectively of O-H stretch while those at 1940 and 1190 are combination bands involving O-H stretch and O-H bend. The choice of band for spectrometry is governed by considerations of sensitivity and selectivity. The overtone bands are satisfactory for use in moisture measurements from 0 to 4 % depending on path length. Measurements in fruits and vegetables at wavelength areas that are also important for the determination of carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, fructose) often lead to total absorption in the presence of significant water even if short path lengths are possible. In this work model systems are used containing different carbohydrates in solvents like heavy water (D$_2$O) or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) that do not contain O-H functional groups.
The erect habit of fruit setting is a unique characteristic of ornamental peppers and wild pepper species. The erect habit is known to be controlled by the up locus on pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) chromosome 12. The result of a genetic analysis using Saengryeog 211 (pendant), Saengryeog 213 (erect), and their $F_1$ and $BC_1$ progeny demonstrated that up is a recessive gene. To develop an up-linked marker, bulked segregant analysis (BSA) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) were employed using 108 $F_{2:3}$ individuals. The closest AFLP marker, $A2C7_{469}$, was located at a genetic distance of 1.7 cM from the up locus and was converted into a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker. This marker was mapped at a genetic distance of 4.3 cM from the up locus. When the CAPS was applied to seven ornamental lines and 27 breeding lines with erect fruit, these genotypes of 28 lines were correctly predicted. Thus, the CAPS marker will be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) of pepper breeding lines with the up allele at the early seedling stage.
