  • A consumer is an individual entity with various motivations. This study is intended to incorporate a hierarchical structure of motivation to understand self-determined motivation for purchasing secondhand merchandise at thrift stores. A conceptual model adopted from Cadwallader et al. (2010)'s comprehensive model of motivation used in a marketing context was developed to investigate motivational process in secondhand merchandise shopping. The conceptual model includes the three levels of motivational structure-the global, contextual (environmental concern and frugality), and situational motivation. A series of the causal relationships among the three levels of self-determined motivations and buying intention to shop at thrift stores were hypothesized. A total of 219 respondents from two different northeastern state universities in the U.S. completed a self-administered survey. The results indicated that secondhand merchandise shopping is well explained in the hierarchical structure of self-determined motivation where the global motivation had a positive impact on the contextual motivations regarding environmental concern and frugality. Of the two contextual motivations, only environmental concern had a positive impact on situational motivation for shopping at thrift stores. Finally, the situational motivation positively influenced the intention to shop at thrift stores. The results of this model suggest that the hierarchical structure of self-determined motivation would be a very useful framework to understand consumer behavior for apparel shopping. Also, further research can be done to identify other contextual motivational factors to understand consumer motivation for shopping at thrift stores.

Two-hundred students attending in high school were selected, and surveyed using questionnaires. Among them, 196 students were used in statistical analyses, with frequency, percentage, mean, correlation analysis, and regression analysis in SPSS/PC+ program. The results were as follows: the levels of the awareness and the behavior of adolescents about consumption in each of purchase, use and disposition steps were more or less middle in terms of rationality or soundness. The correlations between the awareness and the behavior on conspicuous-consumption and between the awareness and the behavior of imitated-consumption in a purchase step were negatively siginificant, and the correlation between the awareness and the behavior on product frugality in a use step was positively significant. In a purchase step, the conspicuous-consumption behavior was affected by the conspicuous-consumption awareness and sex, while the imitated-consumption behavior was affeted by the imitated-consumption awareness, sex and monthly household income. The consumption behavior on product frugality in a use step was affected by its' awareness, monthly household income, and personal expense management. The environment conservation behavior in a disposition was influenced only by monthly personal expenses.

  • This thesis aims at examining the world of pacification in Zhuzi(朱子)'s Daxuezhangju("大學章句"). He said that it was necessary to understand others through Xiejuzhidao(?矩之道) as Shu(恕) for the completion of pacification. The Shu(恕) in it is not an active one but a passive one. It's because one doesn't need to be very active in order to realize the world of pacification. Too much initiative can rather cause loss. Then Shijing("詩經") was quoted, all of which told about that it should be properly followed to understand others through Xiejuzhidao(?矩之道) as Shu(恕). Zhuzi(朱子) explains the reasons for frugality. The modern society is a capitalistic. Yet, not all kinds of capitalism are right. Think about the trash island on the Pacific Ocean. In Daxuezhangju("大學章句"), frugality is suggested as a good way. As the way of frugality, the most important goal of a king is to get rid of the vassals who exploit people. And at the last part, there's warning that petty and crafty men should be appointed. It says that even when everything has been fulfilled, if a petty and crafty man is appointed to take charge of it, the nation can be lost, so a king must give noble men important positions. The world of pacification in Daxuezhangju("大學章句") has not been studied as much as Gewuzhizhi(格物致知). This thesis is expected to offer the chance for more researches on it.
