  • The effect of structure size on the nominal strength of unidirectional fiber-polymer composites, failing by propagation of a kink band with fiber microbuckling, is analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Tests of novel geometrically similar carbon-PEEK specimens, with notches slanted so as to lead to a pure kink band (without shear or splitting cracks), are conducted. The specimens are rectangular strips of widths 15.875, 31.75. and 63.5 mm (0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 in and gage lengths 39.7, 79.375 and 158.75 mm (1.563, 3.125 and 6.25 in.). They reveal the existence of a strong (deterministic. non-statistical) size effect. The doubly logarithmic plot of the nominal strength (load divided by size and thickness) versus the characteristic size agrees with the approximate size effect law proposed for quasibrittle failures in 1983 by Bazant This law represents a gradual transition from a horizontal asymptote, representing the case of no size effect (characteristic of plasticity or strength criteria), to an asymptote of slope -1/2 (characteristic of linear elastic fracture mechanics. LEFM) . The size effect law for notched specimens permits easy identification of the fracture energy of the kink bandand the length of the fracture process zone at the front of the band solely from the measurements of maximum loads. Optimum fits of the test results by the size effect law are obtained, and the size effect law parameters are then used to identify the material fracture characteristics, Particularly the fracture energy and the effective length of the fracture process zone. The results suggest that composite size effect must be considered in strengthening existing concrete structural members such as bridge columns and beams using a composite retrofitting technique.

  • The addressing time should be reduced by modifying cell structure and/or driving method in order to replace the dual scan system by single scan and increase the luminance in large ac plasma display panel(PDP). In this paper, the effects of the dielectric layer thickness and the barrier rib height on the addressing time of ac PDP are investigated. It is found out that the addressing time was decreased with decreasing thickness of dielectric layer on the front glass and thickness of white dielectric layer on the rear glass. The decreasing rate were 160ns/10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 270nsd/10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. Also in case of decreasing the height of barrier rib, addressing time was decreased at the rate of 550ns/10${\mu}m$.

  • A RF limiter is a component to protect the receiver front end from undesired signal. A RF limiter is a key component whose output is constant level for all inputs above a critical value. A RF limiter use a diode to pass signals of low power while attenuating those above some threshold. A RF limiter for receiver protection in modern radar systems is playing a vital role in order to meet challenges of new interference threats and complicated electromagnetic environments. This paper proposed a new circuit for high power RF limiter whose structure is the combination of the PIN diode and Limit diode. PIN diode take a use of its isolation characteristics which act as a switch does. A 2 kW RF limiter with 200 us pulse width at S-band was developed. It shows good agreements between estimated value and measured results.

  • In this paper, compact linear dual polarized series-fed $1{\times}2$ linear and $2{\times}2$ planar arrays antennas for airborne SAR applications are proposed. The proposed antenna design consists of a square radiating patch that is placed on top of the substrate, a quarter wave transformer and $50-{\Omega}$ matched transformer. Matching between a radiating patch and the $50-{\Omega}$ microstrip line is accomplished through a direct coupled-feed technique with the help of an impedance inverter (${\lambda}/4$ impedance transformer) placed at both horizontal and vertical planes, in the case of the $2{\times}2$ planar array. The overall size for the prototype-1 and prototype-2 fabricated antennas are $1.9305{\times}0.9652{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$ and $1.9305{\times}1.9305{\times}0.05106{{\lambda}_0}^3$, respectively. The fabricated structure has been tested, and the experimental results are similar to the simulated ones. The CST MWS simulated and vector network analyzer measured reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) results were compared, and they indicate that the proposed antenna prototype-1 yields the impedance bandwidth >140 MHz (9.56-9.72 GHz) defined by $S_{11}$<-10 dB with 1.43%, and $S_{21}$<-25 dB in the case of prototype-2 (9.58-9.74 GHz, $S_{11}$< -10 dB) >140 MHz for all the individual ports. The surface currents and the E- and H-field distributions were studied for a better understanding of the polarization mechanism. The measured results of the proposed dual polarized antenna were in accordance with the simulated analysis and showed good performance of the S-parameters and radiation patterns (co-pol and cross-pol), gain, efficiency, front-to-back ratio, half-power beam width) at the resonant frequency. With these features and its compact size, the proposed antenna will be suitable for X-band airborne synthetic aperture radar applications.

  • Using a 3-D numerical scheme (LES-WASS-3D) that considered wave-structure-sandy seabed interactions in a 3-D wave field, we analyzed the wave reflection and hydraulic characteristics inside a slit caisson with two chambers in a 3-D oblique wave field. To verify the 3-D numerical analysis method suggested in this study, we compared the numerical results with existing experimental results and found good agreement. The numerical analysis revealed that a standing wave field is generated on the front side of the slit caisson due to the effect of wave reflection. For incident waves propagating perpendicular to the slit caisson, the nodes and anti-nodes of the standing wave are apparent and symmetrical. However, in an oblique wave field, as the incident wave angle decreases, the nodes and anti-nodes of the standing wave become ambiguous and unsymmetrical. It was also found that the wave reflection coefficient decreases as the incident wave angle decreases. It can be pointed out that as the incident wave angle decreases, the turbulent intensity in the chamber increases. Thereby, the increased wave energy dissipation by the increased turbulent intensity reduces the rate of wave reflection. In addition, a strong turbulent intensity generally occurs in the first chamber.

  • BIPV system is one of the best ways to harness PV module. The BIPV system not only produces electricity, but also acts as a building envelope. Thus, it has the strong point of increasing the economical efficiency by applying the PV modules to the buildings. Bifacial solar cells can convert solar energy to electrical energy from both sides of the module. In addition, it is designed as 3 busbar layout which is the same with ordinary mono-facial soalr cells. Therefore, many of the module manufacturers can easily produce the bifacial solar cells without changing their manufacturing equipment. Moreover, bifacial BIPV system has much potential in building application by utilizing glass to glass structure. However, the performance of bifacial solar cells depends on a variety of factors, ranging from the back surface to surrounding conditions. Therefore, in order to apply bifacial solar cells to buildings, an analysis of bifacial PV module performance should be carried out that includes a consideration of various design elements, and reflects a wide range of installation conditions. As a result it found that the white insulation reflector type can improve the performance of the bifacial BIPV system by 16%, compared to the black insulation reflector type. The performance of the bifacial BIPV was also shown to be influenced by inclination angle, due to changes in both the amount of radiation captured on the front face and the radiation transmitted to the rear face through the transparent space. In this study is limited design condition and installation condition. Accordingly follow-up researches in this part need to be conducted.

  • Korean traditional architecture has been carried out in the manner that it harmonized surrounding natural environments and never disturbed them in the scale which did not overwhelm the nature, based on the view of architecture predicated on Yin Yang School. The exposed grain of the wood like pillar, hinge and house rafte, the linear expression of the construction material and the formation between the window and door monopolizing the front side presented a harmony with the nature showing the linear structure. Furthermore the ceiling is low due to the sit life style thanks to the ondol (Korean under-floor heating system and the furniture was made in simple manner to utilize the space as large as possible, for the interior was narrow and close, and also the furniture placing in the middle of the room was movably manufactured to improve the room space. Like this Korean traditional furniture was close associated with the low height and simplicity and harmonized with the blank of the wall accordingly, and it characterized linear & planar natural beauty focusing on the simple and refined unique beauty, because it was made in a good harmony with the interior utensils. This study has presented that the organic characteristics of Korean traditional aesthetic of architecture and the natural beauty being intrinsic in traditional furniture have a mutual relation on the basis of not only the visual recognition, also the aesthetic of naturalism made of the natural material, the constructional naivety as a frame method and the linear & planar formative beauty shown in appearance.

  • Jeonju-Jang is the wood furniture that was made in Chonbuk Jeonju province during the Joseon Dynasty, and was used by middle-upper social classes. It has value as a local cultural heritage because it has unique characteristics in terms of the shape of the furniture, the metal ornament and various functions are integrated in accordance with user's requirements. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to define the structural characteristics of the Jeonju-Jang through case studies of 16 existing artifacts in order to preserve and inherit the value as local cultural resources. The conclusion is as follows. First, Jeonju-Jang in the late period of Joseon Dynasty that is made up of one board to the bottom with the binding of the board. and the front wall, the Juibyuckkan and the Meoruemkan are omitted or made small, so the structure of the surface is simple. There are three or four drawers under the Cheon pan(top plate). There are drawers and shelf inside the hinged door. In the case of a two-layer type, there is a Gaegumeong type door which has half of one side hinged. Second, Jeonju-Jang of the Japanese Ruling Era had a Juibyuckkan by frame binding and an increase in the number of Meoruemkan. and it had independent legs. The Cheon-pan(top plate) was more left and right than both sides. Third, in the late Joseon Dynasty period as a feature of the metal ornaments, cast iron and yellow brass were used as materials. In the Japanese Ruling Era, nickel was mainly used. Various patterns were engraved and the number increased, and it became gorgeous surface as a whole.

  • In this paper, strain and stress on space frame are analyzed at racing car under crash loads. As the deformation is reduced to a minimum during crash and the vulnerable parts are grasped, the safety of driver is ensured. The vehicle frame is modelled with truss structure by inputting the material property of carbon steel on finite element analysis. The increase of impulse momentum is due to speed change at frontal collision. This influence effected on vehicle frame is also analyzed by ANSYS program. The deformation of the frame is studied by applying the crash loads at front, side and rear directions. Though the influence on the seat of driver is small at frontal and rear crash, the deformation due to impact is progressed into this seat. The safety of frame is enhanced by making up for these weak deformations and these results of simulation analysis can be applied to the production of the actual vehicle frame.
