  • This paper proposes an identification system based on QR (Quick Response) code for production and disposal information of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Three thousands and five hundreds of electronic devices have replaced and discarded in South Korea in a year, and twenty millions to fifty millions tons of e-wastes have happened throughout the world every year. According to Gartner, market research institution, the number of IoT devices will increase from 2.3 billions in 2013 to 30 billions in 2020, however, the regulations and systems which take into account environment were not prepared. The identification systems for reflecting information of devices, which are produced or discarded, are required to resolve the problem. The proposed identification system based on QR code can store much more massive data such as the producer, product's model, serial number, recycling rate, recovering rate, recyclability rate, recoverability rate than RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification). Also, users can immediately recognize production and disposal information by a QR code application in a smartphone.

  • The mathematical model of a three phase PWM converter under the stationary αβ reference frame is deduced and constructed based on a Proportional-Resonant (PR) regulator, which can replace trigonometric function calculation, Park transformation, real-time detection of a Phase Locked Loop and feed-forward decoupling with the proposed accurate calculation of the inductance voltage vector. To avoid the parallel resonance of the LCL topology, the active damping method of the proportional capacitor-current feedback is employed. As to current vector error elimination, an optimized PR controller of the inner current loop is proposed with the zero-pole matching (ZPM) and cancellation method to configure the regulator. The impacts on system's characteristics and stability margin caused by the PR controller and control parameter variations in the inner-current loop are analyzed, and the correlations among active damping feedback coefficient, sampling and transport delay, and system robustness have been established. An equivalent model of the inner current loop is studied via the pole-zero locus along with the pole placement method and frequency response characteristics. Then, the parameter values of the control system are chosen according to their decisive roles and performance indicators. Finally, simulation and experimental results obtained while adopting the proposed method illustrated its feasibility and effectiveness, and the inner current loop achieved zero static error tracking with a good dynamic response and steady-state performance.

  • In this paper we present for the first time the electric circuit model for direct frequrncy modulation(FM) response of the conventional distributed-feedback(DFB) semiconductor laser diodes. Especially, in this paper, the proposed model includes not only the carrier density modulation effect, but also the temperature modulation effect determining the DFM characteristics of DFB characteristics of DFB semiconductor lasers. The DFM response due to injection current modulation was obtained as a function of modulation frequency from DC to a few GHz. The circuit model representing the temperature modulation effect is obtained from the structure of DFB LD chip and the simulation results are compared with the published experimental results. The circuit model representing the temperature modulation effect is obtained from the structure of DFB LD chip and the simulation results are compared with the published experimental results. The circuit model representing carrier density modulation effect is obtained from the rate equations of DFB lasers and the simulation results are compared with the results that were obtained by the conventional numerical analysis approach. The results showed good agreements.

  • Structural identification or St-Id is 'the parametric correlation of structural response characteristics predicted by a mathematical model with analogous characteristics derived from experimental measurements'. This paper describes a St-Id exercise on Humber Bridge that adopted a novel two-stage approach to first calibrate and then validate a mathematical model. This model was then used to predict effects of wind and temperature loads on global static deformation that would be practically impossible to observe. The first stage of the process was an ambient vibration survey in 2008 that used operational modal analysis to estimate a set of modes classified as vertical, torsional or lateral. In the more recent second stage a finite element model (FEM) was developed with an appropriate level of refinement to provide a corresponding set of modal properties. A series of manual adjustments to modal parameters such as cable tension and bearing stiffness resulted in a FEM that produced excellent correspondence for vertical and torsional modes, along with correspondence for the lower frequency lateral modes. In the third stage traffic, wind and temperature data along with deformation measurements from a sparse structural health monitoring system installed in 2011 were compared with equivalent predictions from the partially validated FEM. The match of static response between FEM and SHM data proved good enough for the FEM to be used to predict the un-measurable global deformed shape of the bridge due to vehicle and temperature effects but the FEM had limited capability to reproduce static effects of wind. In addition the FEM was used to show internal forces due to a heavy vehicle to to estimate the worst-case bearing movements under extreme combinations of wind, traffic and temperature loads. The paper shows that in this case, but with limitations, such a two-stage FEM calibration/validation process can be an effective tool for performance prognosis.

  • Filiform hairs that respond to movements of the surrounding medium are the mechanoreceptors commonly found in arthropods and vertebrates. The hairs function as a sensory system for perceiving information produced by prey, predators, or conspecifics. A mathematical model is proposed, and the parametric analyses for the response of artificial filiform hair are conducted to design and predict the performance of a microfabricated device. The results for the Cytop hair, one of the most popular polymer optical fibers (POFs), show that the fundamental mode has a dominant effect on the hair behavior in an oscillating medium flow. The dynamic behavior of sensory hair is also dependent on the physical dimensions such as length and diameter. It is found that the artificial hair with a high elastic modulus does not show a resonance in the biologically important frequency range.

  • Physiological response of Panax ginseng var. atropurpureacaulo (purple stem variety, Pg) to light was reviewed through old literatures and recent experiments. Canopy structure, growth, pigment, leaf anatomy, disease occurence, transpiration, photosynthesis (PS), leaf saponin, photoperiodism and nutrient uptake were concerned. P. ginseng var. xanthocarpus (yellow berry variety, Px) and Panax quinquefolius(Pq) were compared with Pg if possible. Compensation point(Cp) increased with increase of light and ranged from 110 to 150 at $20^{\circ}C$ but from 140 to 220 at $30^{\circ}C$ with 4 to 15 Klux indicating occurence of light and temperature-dependent high photorespiration. Characteristics of Korea ginseng to hate high temperature was well accordance with an observation 2000 years ago. Korea ginseng showed lower Cp and appeared to be more tolerant to high light intensity and temperature than American sheng although the latter showed greater PS, stomata frequency and conductance, chlorophyll and carotenoids. Px showed lower PS than Pg probably due to higher Cp. Total leaf saponin was higher in leaves grown under high light. Ratio or diol saponin and triol saponin(PT/PD) decreased with increase of light intensity during growing mainly due to decrease of ginsenoside $Rg_1$ but increase of ginsenoside Rd. Leaves of Pg and Px had $Rg_1$ but no $Rb_3$ which was only found as much as $20\%$ of total in Pq leaves, and decreased with increase of light intensity. Re increased in Pg and Px but decreased in Pq with increase of light. PT/PD in leaf ranged 1.0-1.5 in Pg and Px but around 0.5 in Pq. Korea ginseng has Yang characteristics(tolerant to high light and temperature), cultured under Eum(shade) condition and long been used for Yang efficacy (to build up energy) while Pq was quite contrary. Traditional low light $intensity(3-8\%)$ for Korea ginseng culture appeared to be strongly related to historical unique quality. Effect of light quality and photoperiodism was not well known. Experiences are long but scientific knowledge is short for production and quality assessment of ginseng. Recent scientific knowledge of ginseng should learn wisdom from old experiences.

  • Targeted degradation of proteins through ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis is an important control mechanism in various cellular processes. The process of ubiquitin conjugation is achieved by three enzyme complexes, among which the ubiquitin ligase complex (E3) is in charge of substrate specificity. The SCF (SKP1-CUL1-F-box) family portrays the largest and the most characterized member of the E3 ligases. For each SCF complex, the ubiquitination target is recognized by the F-box protein subunit, which interacts with the substrate through a unique C-terminal domain. We have characterized a novel F-box protein CFL-1 that represents a single LRR-type F-box (FBXL) in the Caenorhabditis elegans genome. CFL-1 is highly homologous to FBXL20 and FBXL2 of mammals, which are known to regulate synaptic vesicle release and cell cycle, respectively. A green fluorescence protein (GFP)-reporter gene fused to the cfl-1 promoter showed restricted expression around the amphid and the anus. Modulation of CFL-1 activity by RNAi affected the time interval between defecations. RNAi-treated worms also exhibited reduced tendency to form dauer when exposed to daumone. The potential involvement of CFL-1 in the control of defecation and pheromone response adds to the ever expanding list of cellular processes controlled by ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis in C. elegans. We suggest that CFL-1, as a single LRR-type F-box protein in C. elegans, may portray a prototype gene exerting diverse functions that are allocated among multiple FBXLs in higher organisms.

  • In this paper, we present a modeling scheme for the already-installed two-wire home phone lines with arbitrary topologies and show that the inter-symbol interference due to the topology can be removed using an adaptive equalizer. The transmission characteristics of the arbitrary-configured two-wire home phone lines can be analyzed through the ABCD matrices. The simulation result shows that the impedance mismatch due to the branch lines renders nulls in the frequency response or delayed pulses in the impulse response. These nulls or delayed pulses cause inter-symbol interference that inhibits correct signal detection. An adaptive equalizer is shown to be effective in eliminating the interference. Also, the simulation result shows that the equalizer converges in 1.5 ms at a data rate of 1 Msps at signal-to-noise ratios greater than 15 dB. In addition, from the result of relation between E$\_$b//N$\_$and BER(Bit Error Rate), we can see that E$\_$b//N$\_$o/ more than 19 dB is required for the data communication with a BER less than 10$\^$-5/.

  • Tag collection is one of the major concerns in radio frequency identification(RFID) system. All tags in RFID reader's transmission range send response message back to the reader in response to collection request message on the given rf channel. When multiple tags respond simultaneously, tag-collision may occur. Tag-collision problem is one of the most important issues in active RFID performance. To mitigate this problem, frame slotted ALOHA(FSA) anti-collision protocol is widely used in active RFID system. Several studies show that the maximum system efficiency of FSA anti-collision protocol is 36.8%. In this paper, we propose an efficient slotted CSMA/CA protocol to improve tag collection performance. We compare our protocol to the FSA anti-collision protocol. For the experiment, an 433MHz active RFID system is implemented, which is composed of an RFID reader and multiple tags. We evaluated the tag collection performance using one RFID reader and 40 tags in the real test bed. The experimental result shows that proposed protocol improves the tag collection time, round and collision probability by 18%, 37.4% and 77.8%, respectively.
