This paper proposes a new start-up method for a load commutated inverter (LCI) in a large synchronous gas-turbine generator. The initial rotor position for start-up torque is detected by the proposed initial angle detector, which consists of an integrator and a phase-locked loop. The initial rotor position is accurately detected within 150ms, and the angle difference between the real position and the detected position is less than 1%. The LCI system operates in two modes (forced commutation mode and natural commutation mode) according to operating speed range. The proposed controllers include a forced commutation controller for the low-speed range, a PI speed controller and a PI current controller, where the forced commutation controller is connected to the current controller in parallel. The current controller is modeled by Matlab/Simulink, where a six-pulse delay of the thyristor and a processing delay are considered by using a zero-order hold. The performance of the proposed start-up method is evaluated in Matlab/Psim at standstill and at low speed. To verify the feasibility of the method, a 5kVA LCI system prototype is implemented, and the proposed initial angle detector and the system performance are confirmed by experimental results from standstill to 900rpm.

Multilevel converters have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. The efficiency parameters of a multilevel converter such as the switching losses and total harmonic distortion (THD) mainly depend on the modulation strategy used to control the converter. Among all of the modulation techniques, the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) method is particularly suitable for high-power applications due to its low switching frequency and high quality output voltage. This paper proposes a new expression for the SHE problem in five-level converters. Based on this new expression, a simple analytical method is introduced to determine the feasible modulation index intervals and to calculate the exact value of the switching angles. For each selected harmonic, this method presents three-level or five-level waveforms according to the value of the modulation index. Furthermore, a flowchart is proposed for the real-time implementation of this analytical method, which can be performed by a simple processor and without the need of any lookup table. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated with several simulation and experimental results for a single phase five-level diode-clamped inverter.

This paper proposes an improved stator flux estimator through ensuring conventional PLPF to act as a pure integrator for sensorless control of induction motors. Conventional PLPF uses the estimated synchronous speed as a cut-off frequency and has the gain and phase compensators. The gain and phase compensators are determined on the assumption that the estimated synchronous angular speed is coincident with the real speed. Therefore, if the synchronous angular speed is not same as the real speed, the gain and phase compensation will not be appropriate. To overcome the problem of conventional PLPF, this paper analyzes the relationship between the synchronous speed error and the phase lag error of the stator flux. Based on the analysis, this paper proposes the synchronous speed error compensation scheme. To achieve a start-up without speed sensor, the current model is used as the stator flux estimator at the standstill. When the motor starts up, the current model should be switched into the voltage model. So a stable transition between the voltage model and the current model is required. This paper proposes the simple transition method which determines the initial values of the voltage model and the current model at the transition moment. The validity of the proposed schemes is proved through the simulation results and the experimental results.

Diode rectifier which can't be controlled output voltage and phase control converter as AC/DC converter have low power factor and harmonics of lower order in the line current. In this paper, three phase PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) AC/DC boost converter is studied to solve these problems. The characteristics of a proposed converter are to control the phase of current without current sensor as a very simple control algorithm using circuit parameters only and to apply sinusoidal PWM method with fixed switching frequency due to a difficult design of input filter and switching device. We simulate for the proposed algorithm that high power factor is achieved and DC link voltage has fast dynamic response without ripple in rectifying and regenerating operation. As a result of experiment with circuit parameter(inductor, capacitor) decided in simulation, the proposed converter had high power factor and reduction of low order harmonics as against diode rectifier.
A polymer composite electrolyte of a blend of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a host polymer, the ethylene carbonate as a solvent, and $LiClO_4$ as a salt was studied. The crystallinity of the polymer electrolytes was evaluated using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolytes was measured by frequency response analyzer(FRA) method. The effect of PEO/PMMA blend ratios on the ionic conduction in these electrolytes was investigated. The electrolyte films showed a phase separation due to immiscibility of the PMMA with the PEO. The PMMA-rich phase and the PEO-rich phase were produced during a film casting. The ionic conductivity of blend electrolyte was dependent on the content of PMMA and showed the highest value at 20 wt.%. However, when PMMA content exceeds 20 wt.%, the ionic conductivity was decreased due to the slow ionic transport through the PMMA-rich phase.

Fabricability of phase shifted grating filters has been theoretically studied by an effective index transfer matrix method. In the optical band-pass filter with multiple ${\lambda}/4$ phase-shifts, the phase-shift error and random variation of the grating period should be suppressed such that corresponding resonance frequency lies within, the filter pass-band. The tolerance for the relative error is less than $10^3$, and is quite stringent in typical filters for WDM application. End facet reflection produces ripple in the transmission spectra and the reflectivity should be less than 1% in order to keep the ripple less than 0.25dB. Also, the effect of waveguide absorption loss is enhanced by the resonance in the filter, and the absorption should be limited to 1dB/cm for the signal loss of less than 0.2dB.

Purpose: The study was to identify the level of Spiritual Health and Fatigue in women with breast cancer according to three treatment phases (post op phase, adjuvant phase, follow up phase). Methods: The research method was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected from 161 women patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Both in-patient and out-patient units from two general hospitals were the source of subjects. The subjects completed two standardized instruments: the "Spiritual Health Scale" developed by Highfield and the "Fatigue Scale" developed and revised by Piper. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, ${\chi}^2$, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Multiple regression. Results: The subscale scores of Self-Esteem of spiritual health and fatigue in patients with breast cancer differed among the three treatment phases (F=3.14, p= .046; F=3.31, p= .039). Significant correlations were found between spiritual health and fatigue. The variables which explained 29% of the variance in fatigue in breast cancer patients were education, religious belief, economic status, and spiritual health. Conclusion: The study results demonstrated that spiritual health significantly explain fatigue. It is needed to develop nursing interventions to improve the spiritual health of breast cancer patients to manage fatigue according to treatment phases.

In this paper, we investigated the compensation characteristics of distorted 16-channel WDM signal due to chromatic dispersion self phase modulation(SPM) and four-wave mixing(FWM). The bit rate and uniform frequency spacing of WDM channels are assumed to be 40 Gbps and 100 ㎓, respectively. The compensation method used in this approach is mid- span spectral inversion(MSSI), Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator(On) in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. We confirmed that applying MSSI in WDM channels within special input power level compensates overall interferenced channels mainly due to FWM. But for long wavelength WDM channels having lower conjugated light power with respect to signal light power, compensation quality is deteriorated as dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes higher. Consequently, we confirmed that it is effective D apply MSSI with HNL-DSF as a nonlinear medium of OPC to WDM transmission link with relative small dispersion in order to compensate equally spaced WDM channels.

In this paper, the sensitivity of massive antenna arrays and digital beamforming to radio frequency (RF) chain in-phase quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance is studied and analyzed. The analysis shows that massive antenna arrays are increasingly sensitive to such RF chain imperfections, corrupting heavily the radiation pattern and beamforming capabilities. Motivated by this, novel RF-aware digital beamforming methods are then developed for automatically suppressing the unwanted effects of the RF I/Q imbalance without separate calibration loops in all individual receiver branches. More specifically, the paper covers closed-form analysis for signal processing properties as well as the associated radiation and beamforming properties of massive antenna arrays under both systematic and random RF I/Q imbalances. All analysis and derivations in this paper assume ideal signals to be circular. The well-known minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer and a widely-linear (WL) extension of it, called WL-MVDR, are analyzed in detail from the RF imperfection perspective, in terms of interference attenuation and beamsteering. The optimum RF-aware WL-MVDR beamforming solution is formulated and shown to efficiently suppress the RF imperfections. Based on the obtained results, the developed solutions and in particular the RF-aware WL-MVDR method can provide efficient beamsteering and interference suppressing characteristics, despite of the imperfections in the RF circuits. This is seen critical especially in the massive antenna array context where the cost-efficiency of individual RF chains is emphasized.

This paper describes new moving target detection technique combining two algorithms to detect targets and reject clutters in video frame images for surveillance system: One obtains the region of moving target using phase correlation method using $N{\times}M$ sub-block images in frequency domain. The other uses adaptive threshold using learning weight for extracting target candidates in subtracted image. The block region with moving target can be obtained using the characteristics that the highest value of phase correlation depends on the movement of largest image in block. This technique can be used in camera motion environment calculating and compensating camera movement using FFT phase correlation between input video frame images. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm accurately detects target(s) with a low false alarm rate in variety environment using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve.
