  • In this paper, it is presented a frequency modulated continuous wave radar (FMCW) for distance measurement. The frequency range is $10{\sim}11$ GHz and the sweep time of the signal is 100 ms. The test target is 0.8 m2 of metal plate. The experiment is performed in open ground and the pyramidal horn antenna of about 22 dBi gain is used. The beat frequency according to the target moving to 40 m is measured. There is a good agreement between measured and calculated results. But the resolution of the FMCW radar is not good such as about 10 cm. It is result from the nonlinear signal of voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). To improve the nonlinear characteristic of VCO, a high pass filter and phase locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer are included in the radar system.

  • Radar systems are divided into the pulse Doppler (PD) radar and the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar depending on the transmission waveform. In particular, the PD radar is advantageous for long-range target detection, and the FMCW radar is suitable for short-range target detection. In this paper, we present design and implementation results for a multi-mode radar signal processor (RSP) that can support both PD and FMCW radar systems to detect unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at short distances as well as long distances. The proposed radar signal processor can be implemented based on Altera Cyclone-IV FPGA with 19,623 logic elements, 9,759 registers, and 25,190,400 memory bits. The logic elements and registers of the proposed radar signal processor are reduced by approximately 43% and 30%, respectively, compared to the sum of logic elements and registers of the conventional PD radar and FMCW radar signal processor.

  • A mixer is a key component in the wireless communication systems. In this paper, we design a mixer which is used in a frequency modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radar system. The frequency sweep range of the radar is from 10 GHz to 11 GHz. The transmitted and received signals of the FMCW radar are applied to LO and RF ports of the mixer, respectively, but the frequency difference between the two signals, which is called "a beat frequency" is under a few KHz and depending on the distance to target. Thus the isolation between the LO and RF ports is very important factor to design this mixer. In this paper we propose a single balanced resistive mixer using GaAs MESFET for this application. We first design a single-ended type resistive mixer using a simulation tool, then design a balanced type to increase the LO-to-RF isolation of the mixer. We fabricated the mixer on the substrate of dielectric constant 10 and thickness 0.635 mm. The measured results show that the isolation and conversion loss of the mixer over the frequency band is 20dB and 10.5dB, respectively. The LO input power for operating the proposed mixer is +3dBm, which is lower than a general conventional mixer's LO power. The 1 dB compression point is 6dBm.

  • This paper presents design of a FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) level meter as well as simulation result of the designed system. The system is designed to measure maximum range of 20m since FMCW radar can be used for measuring short range distance. The distance is measured by analyzing the beat signal which is generated as result of mixing transmitting signal with the reflected received signal. The Fast Fourier Transform is applied to analyze the beat signal for calculating the displacement and Zoom FFT technique is used to minimize measurement error as well as increase the resolution of the measurement. The resolution of the measurement of the designed system in this paper is 2.2mm and bandwidth of 1.024GHz is used for simulation. Thus the simulation results are analyzed and compared in various conditions in order to get a comprehensive idea of frequency resolution and displacement resolution.

  • This paper analyzes the detection probability of FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar based on Doppler frequency and analog-digital converter bit and designs and implements signal processing part of FMCW radar. For performance evaluation, the FMCW radar system consists of a transmitted part and a received part and uses AWGN channel. The system model is verified through analysis and simulation. Frequency offset occurs in the received part caused by the mismatching between the received signal and the reference signal. In case of Doppler frequency less than about 38KHz, performance degradation of detection does not occur in FMCW radar with 75cm resolution The analog-digital converter needs at least 6 bit in order not to degrade the detection probability. And, we design and implement digital signal processing part based on DDS chip of digital transmitted signal generator for FMCW radar.

  • Accurate altimetry is required for the reliable flight control of drones or unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), and the radar altimeter is commonly used owing to its accuracy for the ground level. Due to the limitation for size, weight and power consumption, the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar is appropriate for drone because it has lower complexity than that of pulse Doppler (PD) radar. Especially, fast-ramp FMCW radar, which transmits linear FM signal during very short period, is generally utilized, because it is robust for the ego-motion of drone. Therefore, we present the design and implementation results of the radar signal processor (RSP) for fast-ramp FMCW radar system. The proposed RSP was designed with Verilog-HDL and implemented with Altera Cyclone-IV FPGA device. Implementation results show that the proposed RSP includes 27,523 logic elements, 15,798 registers and memory of 138Kbits and can measure the altimeter at the rate of 100Hz with the operating frequency of 50MHz.

  • Recently, a multi-mode radar system was designed for efficient operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in various environments, which has the advantage of being able to integrate and utilize methods of the pulse Doppler (PD) radar and the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. For the range detection part of the multi-mode radar signal processor (RSP), the hardware structure using the FFT processor and the IFFT processor is required to be designed in a way that improves efficiency on the area side. In addition, given the radar application environment that requires a variety of distance resolutions, FFT processors need to support variable-length operations. In this paper, the FFT processor and IFFT processor in multi-mode RSP range estimation are designed and proposed as hardware for a single FFT processor that supports variable length operation of 16-1024 points. The proposed FFT processor designed in hardware description language (HDL) and can be implemented with 7,452 logic elements and 5,116 registers.

  • This paper presents a tunable composite right/left-handed (CRLH) delay line for a delay line discriminator that linearizes modulated frequency sweep in a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar transmitter. The tunable delay line consists of 8 cascaded unit cells with series varactor diodes and shunt inductors. The reverse bias voltage of the varactor diode controlled the group delay through its junction capacitance. The measured results demonstrate a group delay of 8.12 ns and an insertion loss of 4.5 dB at 250 MHz, while a control voltage can be used to adjust the group delay by approximately 15 ns. A group delay per unit cell of approximately 1 ns was obtained, which is very large when compared with previously published results. This group delay can be used effectively in FMCW radar transmitters.
